Always keep a stage door handy for such eventualities - it never seems to hurt that much in film.

Mended the slow p*ncture that has been on my "to do" list for a month. No more pumping the tyre up every two days!

New reflective tape applied on the forks. Marine-grade stuff designed for buoys out at sea - very bright 8)
  • New rear derailleur (tiagra), cable, chain (KMC X9-93), cassette. All carefully adjusted, and running sweeter than a sweet thing with an extra dollop of sweetness. Sweet.

And the mudguards have gone on too - my silver SKS chromoplastic jobbies are now into their third winter. No adjustments needed there, they just fit now.

And with new gloves and fleecy tights, I'm winterised. Bring it on.

Just fitted a bell to the Sirrus

Took all my mechanical ingenuity

Mind you, bars are a little crowded with bell, 'puter, light, lock wound round and shifters/grips/brake levers on there

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Replaced the Charge Knife on the Fixed with a new one after the old one split almost in two (warranty replacement by Wiggle - phew) - re-fitted 'temporary' saddle back on the MTB, and whilst at it, put the studded tyres on the MTB for any ICY commutes.

Last night Jono came round to get some old campag bits from my broken bike

I live in a graveyard and we were watching that Mark Gatiss thing about horror films. He was just covering "Dawn of the Dead" where there are zombies tapping on the windows when Jono tapped on our window. How we laughed

Then Jono and I spend 10 minutes in the kitchen with a 3' lever pole and various tools removing a ultratorque chainset. English thread, and one side has reverse threading

Me: "so which way do I turn the cups?"
    Jono: "try this way"
Me: "ok you used to work in a bike shop"
    (it is the wrong way)
    Jono: "try the other way"
  • Was cleaning the MTB/commuter front mech last night and had a minor brainwave  I never shift out of the middle chainring, so why do I need a front mech? I removed it, as well as the front shifter.

This should eliminate chain rub, but let's see if I might have introduced a tendency to de-chain before I declare it a success.

As a bonus, removing the front shifter means I can mount my bell nearer to my left thumb.

another option leave the mech on but remove cable and shifters then limit onto the middle ring.

Done a bit of mid-commute fettling on the front Road Racer. I wondered why it was moving a little more this morning, it turns out the cable tie was at fault somehow :?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Just another patch to a well worn tube.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

    Hi,
Replaced handlebars on the Winter Hack, following the last week's breakage.
Bars were £3 from The Bike Station (local recycler). Running as drops for now (the old ones were flipped&chopped bullhorns) and I'll see how I find them. They are wider than before, which feels a bit odd at the moment.
Pleasantly straightforward fettle- a little hassle getting the remnant of the old bars off but the replacements, levers, light and cadence-comp all went on easily... probably about half an hour or so all in.

Still need to tape them, though. Wonder if the LBS has some dark blue tape...

    Cheers,
    W.

So far today I've swapped BB5s for BB7s and fitted a new gear cable to the alfine. This afternoon I'll fettle the tensions.

Cleaned Langster, adjusted brakes, serviced rear hub, fitted new Brooks saddle and clipless pedals.
Decent use of some enforced post-crash non cycling time. May park the roadie for winter and go fixed for a few months.

My PX is starting to demand a clean. Shifting gears is starting to become a game of chance, and my drivetrain sounds like a bag of spanners. I'm posting this here to make sure I do something about it on Saturday :P

I broke a spoke in my Mavic Ksyrium Elite rear wheel on Friday night/Saturday morning putting an abrupt end to my ride.

Managed to get a new spoke mail order and fitted it last night, and whilst very different to normal spokes and nipples it all went well and I got the wheel back to dead true - excellent!

Encouraged by my success I decided to have a look at the front wheel and tried to make a small tweak to take out a minor kink and managed to sheer the threaded nipple off!!

I think I have managed to dig out the remainder of the nipple without damaging the thread in the rim too much so now have to track down a front spoke (which are a different length to the 2 different lengths that go into the rear wheel).

One step forwards, one step backwards.

I re-taped my saddle the other night. Yes, saddle. With duct tape.

Should probably get a new one, but I kinda like the well-used aesthetic.

I need to do this, the 4 year old Fizik Arione on my commuter is showing it's age, but too comfy to give up.

Ya can't knock duct tape! Just replaced my MRX grip shifter - the old one being held together by superglue and duct tape!!

Readjusted brakes - sponginess can sneak up on you, and you haver to be careful not to launch yourself over the handlebars with your newfound stopping power after fettling!!

Also changed my chain, and decided to gamble on just cleaning not changing the cassette - hopefully can get away with it until after winter. Chain only cost £4, so don't mind if i need to replace again in the spring.

In my wisdom also decided to clean the jockey wheels and carelessly replaced the outer half of the cage the wrong way round. I only went a mile to the shops, but was convinced the cassette gamble hadn't paid off - kept slipping like billy-o!

then back at home noticed the cage problem, allowing the chain to part slip off the jockey wheel....

I did a similar thing to my ancient Selle-Italia Turbo. Still got another 20 years in it I reckon

Same here, used a bit of black insulating tape on mine. Need to look after it, only got one more left after that one fails - the new ones just don't look the same (although I'm amused bythe idea that they sold the design to Charge and then just reissed it themselves - even if that may not have actually happened....)

Funny the only saddle i've ever not gotten on with was the charge that's currently on the FGSS, my MASSHOOF arse seems at home on pretty much anything. Yet to try out my carbon Selle italia Thoork

Thought I'd do a bit of spanner work today as I'm gonna be off the bike a while; all was going well until I heard a rhythmic clunk from the back wheel

Then I realised it was the "pie-plate"

So I thought I'd share this with you all.
  • Not bike related, but I've just (finally) finished replacing the case on my youngest's Nintendo DS. Tricky little job, but finally managed to replace the power switch that I broke when I tried to get it back together last time. And the time before that, and the time before that.

Still, she now has a translucent green DS with an extra light show when she holds down one of the buttons. 8)

Stripped a mates bike of the brakes and bars and mounted them onto his new old frame with the front brake sorted, just the otehr 3 controls needing sorting fully but the two girls in his shop at thetime buying a 'toy' made my concentration wander
Must finish the Gore cable install on bike2 tonight and retape the bars.

Trimmed the mudguard stays so the rear guard on the Pompino now fits more sleekly.

Stripped the grips and controls and old (bent) bars off the MTB to allow me to fit the new bars.
Realised the new bars are oversize and my stem is old skule  . Ar$e ! Now shopping for new stems....

Properly tensioned the belt on the bryant: not proper tension guage so hung a 7lb chain lock from it whilst measuring the deflection.

Need to check the alfine gearing next.
