Discovered my second deflation in as many days this morning. So changed the tube. Another impact deflation by the looks of it.

EDIT: and had the freehub replaced on my rear Open Pro.

Stripped cleaned and re-greased the front hub only to discover a couple of pits in one cone :( . I remember from last time I got these replaced they are tricky to get hold of and a quick check reveals only Madison and maybe Bonthrone have any - only available as a complete axle, cones and locknuts for £25! Weirdly the rear axle is only £19. Ho hum; starting to see why people go for cartridge bearings. Rammed it full of grease to get through the next week or so.

Ran out of time to do the rear as well, but did give the drive train a bit of a clean and re-lube, and cleaned the brakes, which also new pads. I see an expensive month ahead.

It appears I;d over tensioned the belt drive, as evidenced by the ratchetting this morning. Stopped in Kingston to slacken it off and it became slient again, but then of course iI realised that adjusting the wheel position threw-off the alfine gearing.

Have made some more adjustments once I got to work and I'm hoping it will be smooth as butter on the way home.

Fitted Marathon Ultraskins to the SS, and gave it a good clean with some of this stuff, which appears to have magic cleaning properties: http://www.motorex.com/index.cfm?oid=1158&lang=en&webtoolDbTemp=eintragDetail&eintragId=163

Put the Marathon Plus back on the commuting bike

I fitted them with my bare hands which is supposedly impossible.

Mind you the rear one has done 13,000km and has come on and off a few times so I guess it is stretched

I just got back into biking this June and have been on a full sus mtb, however I bought myself an old Royal Enfield and stripped it down, cleaned, greased ( even had the frame re powdercoated) and re built.
took it out on it's maiden voyage yesterday to tweak the seat postion etc, and loved it BUT I have just found out how rough the roads actually are on smaller harde tyres along with a stiffer frame.
Only one hiccup, chain speed link fell apart during the return ride but fortunatley I was within 100yrds of home so was in time to collect the boy from school.
Cannot wait to get out on it again, as long as I can sort the chain today, may try the bike for a commute tommorow

Mid-ride this morning: stopped to re-attach the non-drive side crank arm, which had worked itself loose and came off. Wasn't sent the plastic cap by CRC with the chainset and my spares don't fit because the hole on thw 105 compact chainset is larger than than the old Ultegra version. Pants.

Danger, CJ, remember that the crank cap is just for positioning, it shouldn't actually do any holding. That's what the allen bolts are for.

That's what I was thinking. If it's just a plastic cap, I doubt it's designed to take any serious load. Cranks coming loose seems to be quite common, but aside from one incident several years when I was new to fettling, and didn't bother to read up first, I've never had a problem. Square taper ftw.

Took the new open pro rim into the not so LBS for a hub swap over/rebuild, 3 hours later i get a text saying the new wheel is ready for collection 8)

I can highly recommend Behind the bike shed in Andover for wheel building, he did a front open pro cd for me a couple of years ago and it still perfectly true.

I have however spent quite a lot of money on what was going to be a cheap replacement winter rear wheel, now should I stick an open pro with black DT spokes on the winter hack???

Aha! 'Tis I, now much relieved that there are people with time on their hands like Brun who can save me valuable seconds.

Anyway, have now added rear mudguard a la SKS to the mighty 531, which is in lovely jet black in direct contrast to the silver front guard (still the original Bluemels Olympic), although with tasteful blue sticky tape (primary function: holding said guard together)

Front not yet fitted, there's only so much a chap can do in an hour whilst looking after 2 x 5-year-olds 8)

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Put the Garmin mounts onto both bikes after those nice people on Liberty house sent me a 'new' 705 with another 12 month warranty :D Took the Topeak barXtender off the Tricross as I've decided to run with a Fenix L2D and Cateye EL530 upfront.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Fitted a new Sora rear mech to the Giant, and cleaned off the debris from Friday night's commute, but it quickly became apparent that the hour I'd allowed myself (also had to get some kitchen cabinets on the wall), so the Giant is sat chainless with a filthy chain hanging nearby. Might have to take the Dahon tomorrow or do some early morning fettling.

Also managed to get the Miche track BB out of the Mercian with the aid of the following

    1 x Campag BB tool
    1 x 12" adjustable spanner
    1 x 4lb club hammer

With a little gentle persuasion, it finally came loose.

  • Pop rivited another tail piece, (shorter one this time) to my new crud 2's, after the first rear bit fell off whilst the bike was being transported on the back of my car.

lets see that sucker fall off now!
    I ache, therefore I am.
  • Adjusted my rear mudguard AGAIN!!!!

I really cant believe how many times I have done this. Just about every time I go away from the bike for a couple of days I come back and it is rubbing on the tyre again

Replaced the shockingly cheap caged head set bearings on my langster with some decent cartridge ones, by bashing out the completely pointless 'integral' headset cups with a big srewdriver and a rubber mallet.... very satisfying.

Finally got my Planet X Kaffenback on the road, admittedly as a singlespeed at the mo' (40/16); may have to put an 18 on the back as the 10% sections of my local hill were knee-wrenchingly insurmountable, today!
Only need a rear brake cable & outers (to make it safer!) and it'll be complete.
Nice brown Charge Spoon Ti with brown Fizik bar tape and Dia-Compe levers with gum hoods and a pair of Conti 25mm Gatorskins and it looks the mutts nuts IMHO. :D

Fettling fail! At lunchtime I attempted to aid a damsel in distress who'd caught her chain 'twixt cassette and frame. It didn't end that well. Cold fingers and sharp sprockets do not play nicely...

Installed a new rear brake cable then used an old inner tube to install a surround over the brake cable that is between the V`s.
I know you get little ones made for the purpose but i had the inner tube lieing around so i cut a 1" section for each then cut it down the middle, using patch glue i then joined it back together around the cable.Nice little job and cost me nothing except cold fingers :D

  • I HATE CHAIN MAINTENANCE!

Couldn't get the little bits of gunk from inside the chain links, despite dunking it in a tub of degreaser and shaking it to death, and attacking it with a toothbrush. Then when I came to put it back on, I managed to push out the pin instead of reforming the chain.

Cue a lengthy, tense and frankly, angry time with the wife holding the pin in place with tweezers while I try and get the chain tool to push it back in. After which, I had no stomach for putting it back on the bike, so after cleaning up the mess I made in the kitchen AND bathroom (and working outside in the freezing cold using snow to clean my hands), I left the clean-ish chain wrapped in an oily rag where I will no doubt come back to find it in February, rusted solid despite dousing the bugger in GT85, will have to buy a new chain anyway and then find it won't work on the old cranks.

Did I mention I hate drivetrain maintenance?
