Fitted new SLX rear derailleur to the MTB.
Started threading the chain through new derailleur.
Hand slipped. Nice new strong derailleur spring sprung.

SRAM quicklink showed how quickly it can vanish into the undergrowth when propelled by rear derailleur.

Went inside and logged onto CRC to order more quicklinks

  • I think I'm getting close to having fully set up the Orbea to my liking. Swapped the 120mm stem for a 130mm, swapped the brakes to "Euro"-style (my BeOne came like this, and I've got used to it. Also, the cable routing on the Orbea works better now). Re-wrapped the bars in some lovely, blue cork tape.

Rode to work on it this morning, forgetting to pop my saddle-bag on. Got six miles before I realised that the bars were twisting forwards and I didn't have the requisite allen-key. Stopped at Tool Station on my way in to buy some...

Got wolf-whistled at something chronic.

Took the commuter apart 'cos there was a bit of BB crunching. I'd expected it to be something else, but no, one of the bearings was actually grumbling. Oh well. Not a bad lifetime really.

On removing the cranks I found the crank cap was done up to eleven (not by me), so had to destroy the hex-drive head removing it. This, despite the writing that said "not too many Newton-metres, thanks" on it.

I'd thought the steering was a little "indexed", so dropped the forks out. The bearing races were helpfully covered in massive amounts of horrible mucky paste. Not sure about the mounting surfaces in the frame either

The rear derailleur cage-return spring also went "ping" again and skipped out of position, taking one of the pieces of its mount with it this time. Managed to fix it (again) though.

Despite that, actually really enjoyed the totally fruitless, in fact slightly destructive fettling. Guess I'll be down the LBS tomorrow to get some new bits.

Fully striped the old frame I bought to build up for the GF, well nearly fully stripped, the bleeding BB took a week to get out and I have given up and gonna take it to the LBS to get the fixed cup removed. the other cup required a hammer and bolster to move it!! the fixed cup cant be persuaded to move in that way :P

I came to love the motto if it aint working get a bigger hammer

I done built mah new fixie. She's (this one's definitely a girl) pretty. Will post pics soon.

I have decided to keep the Bowery in one piece and try to use it to learn how to replace more complicated things like bottom brackets and sort out wheel hubs etc.

As a result of this, I've currently got the toe clip pedals that came with the fuji on it. I freakin' hate toe clips. :x

I've removed toe clips from a pedal - it should be possible. i needed to prise a reflector out to get to the bolts.

Only if you laid it on your bike.

You didn't lay it on your bike, did you?
The above is a post in a forum on the Intertubes, and should be taken with the appropriate amount of seriousness.

I laid the carpet in the bedroom but I was really thinking about my bike.

Did that yesterday. I sweated more doing that than I did during this morning's ride.

Erm, a say what now?

I used a number of crude devices for the carpet and the underlay: a stanley knife, scissors and a large screwdriver.

Tbh, though, the carpet's a temporary measure because we eventually want to put wood flooring down, but also re-shape the room, so that has to be done before the floor goes down.

Put the new Schwalbe Blizzards on my bike and swpped the cadence sensor to the top of the chainstay.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    Degreased and regreased my chain.
    Tightened my rear brake cable.
Indexed and generally sorted out my gears (after cocking them up just before L2B).
Wiped down bike with baby wipes.
Tried and failed to reposition the sensor for my computer.

    This weekend’s fettling:

Focus – Fitted bottle cage, pumped tyres up, cleaned & lubed drivetrain.

NRS – Stripped down and rebuild rear suspension to find where it’s creaking. Need to order and then fit pivot bearings. Adjusted rear brake which was dragging slightly. Put the Maxxis Wormdrive tyres on. Fitted bottle cage.

XTC – Adjusted the brakes (front brake kept ‘snatching’ on the disk). Removed the aforementioned Wormdrive tyres, fitted an old set of XC Fire Pro’s. Fitted bottle cage. Changed the blue bolts on the MPH3 reseviours to red ones (to go with the colour scheme) Washed bike, removed RaceFace decals from the stem as I’m running it upside down and it didn’t look right, then finally fitted “El Capitano” frame stickers.

Also spent some time knocking out the bearings of a seized HTII bottom bracket with a view to replacing the bearings rather than the whole unit.

    Damn and Blast.

Just thought I would up my saddle by a smidge,

Stripped the blinking thread off the saddle clamp doing it back up.

and the cycle challenge thingy and the fact I am so close to 500 for the month and my dislike of tubes in nice weather mean I shall probably cycle it in in the morning at a silly height. GRRRRR

Well, I went to clean my back brake calliper (Tiagra), so took it all to bits then spent about an hour trying to get the bolt and nut that holds the two pieces together tightened in the right way so the calliper actually opened and closed, but didn't wobble.

    Never doing that again.

Cycled in with the saddle about 6 inches too low and pointing in pretty much any direction it fancied. Not good.

Did the same myself with some cheap Acor callipers but managed to get them back together working quite easily after spreading grease where the sun doesn't shine.

The only benefit of flipping my stem last night was it is not as far to fall now, must remember to do the same on the Tricross before I ride it again.

Just popped on my Egg Beaters & the corresponding cleats into the shoes, gave them a good pump through with Teflon grease and first impressions are good.

On Sunday, I put a new cassette on my commuter. This was to replace the 20-year-old one that seemed to worn to work harmoniously with the new chain I put on earlier in the week (also 20 years old).

Found out why last night's run was so much hard work: back wheel bearing feels like it's full of gravel. So, popped one of the cones off and applied a big dollop of grease, put it all back together (and changed the back tyre) by which time it was gone midnight. Got me to work OK, but will finish the job at lunch time. Last thing at night is not really the best fettling hour.
