Greens are the All Seasons, or something like that. Koolstops are excellent, but I thought I'd try something else and see how they go.

New bike, new fettling. The front cantilever brake on my Jake The Snake was set up bizarrely wrong, with the thingy that it pulls against was upside down and rather close to the bars and also twisted around by at least 45 degrees to allow it to work. Now I've fixed it I have a whole load of extra brake cable and no tool to clamp the end with.

Don't order them from Wiggle, still no processing of my order which they've had for 36 hours along with my money  Can anybody suggest another source?
Removed the chain from my SS and dropped it into a milk bottle of degreaser to soak and found the reason why the drivetrain was making graunching noises wasn't the BB I got from Velosolo and is the Shimano freewheel.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Put together my new bike and dismantled my old BSO.

And now I'm aching and have lost more sweat than I would had I gone out on the bike :(

Have gone fettling crazy recently and ended up building up a new bike from scratch!!

I am capturing my experiences in a blog (see link in my sig), but it has definitely been a valuable experience thus far - certainly don't feel the need to visit the LBS for routine servicing any more and am much more confident about dismantling and rebuilding the various bits of my bike.

Most of it is just common sense (and a bit of patience) - with a basic toolkit, you can do almost everything you will need to do with any regularity.

Just replaced the pads front and back on my MTB. I hate changing the pads on Juicy 7s. Worst design ever. And now the rear one is rubbing. The front set is always easy to change but the rear one is always a nightmare. Last time this happened I had to bend the pad spring out to twice its normal width to get it to work. Guess I'll try that again but I'm taking a break for now.

Just replaced my Dura-ace chain with a KMC X9-L. Went for a really nice 40 mile ride in the sun this morning, but more than a little disappointed to realise that a new cassette is also in order  Not that amused to find out that Ultegra 9 speed cassettes are 38 quid too....

Also replaced my moulded Shimano brake pads with Kool-stop dual compound and cartridge holders. Wow....

Where did you buy the Kool Stops? I'm quickly discovering that the Tektro pads that came on my Jake the Snake are frighteningly poor.

Did it a while back but it has worked nicely for several weeks now
Stuck on the track style drops on my FG. Problem is, the grips are only on the drops and the smooth metal is hard to grip when riding on top. So i thought for a temporary fix i'd cut up some old inners to they are a long strip and wrap them round the top until i can get some proper bar tape, or anything better (see pic of Carly in sig). Turns out the inners work really nicely, Grip the bars well, and are comfy even without gloves. Not i'm totally used to the drop bars, which i will admit at first felt horrible!!!

JUst wiped the bike down and adjusted the saddle so it's got a tiny bit of nose up and adjusted it a little bit back, just trying little adjustments to get the right feeling and balance.

Wish me luck - I've just bought a crank removal tool along with a BB tool. Going to strip down and thoroughly clean / lube everything I can get my hands on tomorrow.

BB is creaking so I figure a damn' good clean is needed.

Also got some new koolstop pads for the Tricross on order (out of stock at the shop  ) so they'll get fitted next week when they turn up.

I also dug out my chain link tool, so that's going in a bath of cleaner then white spirit then lubed and put back on.

The Tricross is getting loved tomorrow 8)

    Yup!

Actually, I've also realised I have a pair of almost unused 28c Conti Top Contacts doing nothing. I wonder if I should swap the 32c Conti City Rides for them..... :?:

    Fart.

Chain tool broke while the chain was off.

Everything on the bike is gleaming - swapped the tyres (adjusted computer) cleaned and adjusted brakes (one was rubbing and the rears were not centred on the rim). Lubed everything, wheels and cranks are spinning WAY easier than before. :D

What's the easiest way to get the chain back on by the way?

The chain was gleaming clean but there are a few rusty bits even after a thorough clean, tempted to buy a new one, but might just get some links... not sure what to do now. :?

Have been doing up an old old mountain bike, i noticed that the back wheel was drifting when i pedaled hard. Thought it must be the quick release but once i got the wheel out the axel came out in two pieces, with rust on the fracture face! obviously been broken for ages. so i just rebuilt an entire rear axle. Which was awesome i feel like i can tackle any problems now!

Right. New chain fitted and as I managed to get the gearing set up before the old one went PING it all worked first time! :D

Quick adjust on the front brakes and a fiddle on the rack, last polish and the bike looks and GOES great!

Looking forward to tomorrow now, to see how much better it is.

What do you reckon the odds are on something flying off / breaking / siezing / snapping / just not working on the way in tomorrow??? :?

Considering your amount of posts in this thread it is very likely something with fly off/break/sieze/snap or explode

Replaced my front brake pads with ones that have actual pad on them as opposed to just metal. S'nice being able to stop.

One day I'll replace the rear ones.

Replaced rear pads last night, Salmon Koolstops again. Noticed front are down to about 2mm from the holder so ordered a set for the front too.

Slight adjustment to the front mech while I was in the garage, and also put a little rubber pad where my pannier rubs on it's rack.

Midway therough sorting the MTB now.

Given ait a good clean and taken the BB out as well as taking the rearmech apart.
Now just needs the new BB fitted, hub bearings replaced, disc brakes given a good clean and piston lube new seatpost and it will ride good as new again.

  • Just stripped, degreased/re-greased and re-assembled the RSX brake/shifter on my Orbea, made the mistake of lending it to a mountain biker in the office as he wanted to have a crack at a sportive. He had managed to run out of gears so badly that he got it jammed in an imaginary, even-more-top, top gear.

Quite a simple job when you get into it, but I wouldn't try it with a more modern shifter.

Also need to swap the saddle for something a bit less soft. I suspect the one that's on there will be chafe-tastic.
  • Put some bull bars on my tourer as they are so comfy. Fitted bar end shifters into the ends so they are facing forward. Fitted new XT Shadow derailleur. Fitted Bar Phat under the h/bar tape. Very pleased with the result, I have indexed gears again and a comfy position for me.

Replaced front mech on the Cervelo, cleaned and greased the skewers. Will strip and clean the BB tomorrow. Have also replaced the cables and grip tape on the fixed. Need to take the free hub off tomorrow, clean it and get it on eBay.

  • Fitted my cool blue speedplay zeros to my Trek Mad One 4.7. looked great. 8) Then fitted my wired Cateye Cadence Computer. Had to use massive zipties round the down tube. It looks like a piece of S**T. Maybe I will fit the wireless Trek version when it comes out.

Offically consigned my old Cannondale CAAD2 to commuter/ winterbike status. Removed the Fulcrum 3s. Fitted bombproof wheels with 25c tyres. Adjusted the race blades to take the larger tyres. Fitted my Crank Bros Road Pedals. Finally ordered new tyres from Chainreaction using the 10% off code from another thread. A GP 4000 for the Mad One and Gator Skin for the Cannondale.

Lastly ordered cafe covers for the Speedplay Cleats - they are amazingly treachorous. Next week I can fly home from work on the Cannondale compared with my creaking Edinburgh Courier. All that took the whole Saturday afternoon.

Handle bar off and stem out. Everything degreased, cleaned, regreased and replaced in an effort to stop the annoying creaking that I've put up with for too long.
Front brake spring greased to stop another annoying creak.
Chain removed, degreased (to get rid of the wet lube), cleaned, regreased with dry lube and replaced.
Cassette removed, degreased (to get rid of the wet lube), cleaned, regreased with dry lube and replaced.
Bike computer sorted out but not sure of the calibration. If it is right, I've certainly sped up since I last used it. May be set to KM/h though.
Wheels cleaned. Cleaning spokes is boring.
Bike wiped down with wet wipes.

Ready for London to Brighton return now.

Spent 10 miles yesterday trying to work out where the tiny rattle was coming from on my bike, grabbing parts, tapping others. Got back home and screwed the collar on the long valve presta tube I put in on saturday up tight  I'v also realised I have grey pads, not black on my specialised gloves after putting them through the washing machine.

I done built mah new fixie. She's (this one's definitely a girl) pretty. Will post pics soon.

I have decided to keep the Bowery in one piece and try to use it to learn how to replace more complicated things like bottom brackets and sort out wheel hubs etc.

As a result of this, I've currently got the toe clip pedals that came with the fuji on it. I freakin' hate toe clips. :x
