Adjusted indexing for silky smooth gear changes last night. At least I thought that I did. Rode like a dog this morning and need to re-fettle tonight :?

Tonight I put the anchor, and the chain
This weekend, it will have a door.
From then on, my perfecta will have to sleep outside.

trying a higher gear this time (45x16=~74") which I might regret: It was certainly pretty grindy on the (uphill) way in to the station this morning,

What sort of gradient is that uphill stretch? I'm giving some thought to going fixed/SS but there's a section of 17%., and I think 74 GI might be a bit high...

It's not steep- maybe averages 3-4% but runs for a couple of miles. It's too far for me to sprint up it (on the way back, there's a short pitch, steeper, but I can just attack and blast up).
I climb it at 14mph or so on the Winter Hack, which is about 70rpm. With the 74" gear the cadence is just a little slower.. and I can feel the difference. the return trip up Dundas is steeper (not sure how much), though a lot shorter. I'll see how I get on tonight.

The shape of the hills makes a big difference- if you can build up speed on the approach and power on up, maintaining your speed and cadence then it's cool. If you have a steepening slope which takes your speed and saps your energy on the approach, the subsequent steep section is much tougher.
I've found that I've got much better at maintaining momentum and pushing on up climbs since I went fixed.

    Cheers,
    W.

    *nod.

The uphill I'm talking about is only half a mile. I might just decide to MTFU and try it.

It's quite alright, I have taken the piss often enough to deserve getting it back now that I've had TWO more (unrelated) punctures since my last post! The first one blew a hole in the tyre wall on the way home last night (only doing about 15mph on a side street at the time, thankfully) and it's almost with relief that I'm going to replace the tyre.

The second one was a slow puncture this morning on the roadie, which has been pressed into service until I get a new tyre on the fixed. I think it might be because I bent the end of the valve as I pumped the tyres up this morning? I guess I'll have to spend lunchtime replacing the tube, again. Man.

Took some helicopter tape too the Allez last night, on the headtube where the rear cable rubs and the seatpost where the saddlebag has been rubbing.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I replaced a broken spoke in my rear wheel, without taking it off the frame. Had to take off the tyre and some rim tape, though. Cheap part to replace, the spokey cost eleven times the spoke. I hate putting tyres on rims.

Half the rear mech is missing too. And that small wheeled blue thong in the background is in even worse nick. Is this where bikes go to die?

Replaced bottom bracket on the fixed, and at the same time got a bit carried away doing a bit of cleaning...

Edit - twitpic doesn't seem to like direct linking, try this link instead.

Think I've managed to put it all back together again properly, there were no bits left over anyway. Guess I'll find out sooner or later.
  • Tightened up my bottom bracket which had come loose just after I had tightened the chain, which was a bit coincidental.
  • Had a bit of a nightmare with the Orbea, I was re-indexing the gears when the cable pinged off, leaving the right hand shifter completely stuck in an imaginary gear. Shimano RSX shifters seem to do this, it's an absolute pain. As such I had to open the shifter to release the rocker, took bloody ages to get it all working and back together again, and I'd mashed the cable inner with removing and refitting it so many times.

Went to Halfords, and they'd run out of gear inners, but they did have a set with the outers and ferrules too. So the Orbea now has new cable inners and outers and rather nice stainless steel ferrules. Seems a decent kit for £9, I was quite surprised.

Stripped the bars, stem and fork off the Mercian frame to confirm ITB's analysis that the headset was pitted. It is.

Also discovered it is an unusual Tange headset, made specifically for Mercian. Might try and find an exact replacement, as it's rather pretty. BTW, on the evidence of the bar clamp bolt, you do need a torque wrench, ITB

Put a slightly longer bit of outer on the rear brake and found the cable adjuster on the Ultegra callipers was bent but a pair of jussies sorted it out.
