The cones do, the cups are in the hub / freehub, hence my dawning realisation that I can replace the driv3 side

New cleats fitted to one pair of shoes and applied some chain lube to the pedals so they are now silent as I pedal.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Changed out a set of jockey wheels and put a new chain on. All noises now gone!

Swapped my BB this morning. This morning's commute was brought to you by Depeche Mode: Enjoy The Silence.

Or not. Normal squeaky service was resumed on the way home.

Will tighten tonight and maybe change pedals too. And cleats.

How would installing a new BB stop the pedals / cleats squeaking on the morning commute??

Or were you cycling to / from the ENT department?? (I do love these lateral thinking puzzles)

Are you one of these telepathic people who can correctly identify the source of a click/squeak on the first attempt?

For the rest of us, working your way round the bike steadily replacing bits until the noise goes away is a fairly standard activity. Of course it generally doesn't work because, by the time you get round to replacing the bit that was actually clicking, the new BB (which is always the first thing you replace) will have developed a click of its own.

In this case, my money's on the headset.

Cleaned and lubed my chain last night as it was getting a bit squeaky. Couldn't find my dry lube though so used wet lube, then found the dry lube whilst putting everything away. So thoroughly cleaned chain again and used the dry lube instead. I then organised all my tools, greases and lubes into one place.. which I could have sworn I'd already done the last time I was working on my bike!

No, I'm definitely not. I once spent 58 miles of a 60 mile charity ride convinced the rhythmic squeak once per pedal revolution, seated or standing, was a sign that I'd soon be shopping for a new bottom bracket or checking in for more knee surgery.
Only right at the end did I notice the noise stopped when freewheeling but could be induced by swinging the bike from side to side. Then it dawned on me that I'd lashed my Carradice to the bike in order to carry more supplies and clothing options, and it was the leather straps creaking on the saddle rails as the bag swung to and fro.

The only thing I've eliminated is the saddle as it happens when I'm standing on the pedals more than when I'm sitting.

Former BB sounded like I was stoning a dolphin to death (CJ can testify to this). Tightened the new BB this evening as it appeared to be a bit loose. Hoping that was just user error / installation gremlins otherwise it points to the frame being a bit 'baggy'.

Fitted the 28mm Rubino's to the commuter yesterday, retaped the bars and adjusted the brakes. Haven't ridden it yet, but will commute this week and then on Saturday morning I'm starting off on a London to Bruges ride (and halfway back) over the BH weeked. Had 23mms on before, so will be looking forward to more comfort. Dropped the pressure from 100/110 to 85/85.

  • The drive side pedal on the Pinnacle had developed a creak, so I took both off, disassembled them completely, cleaned and regreased thoroughly. First ride on them yesterday, now both pedals creak equally.

    Gah!

Fitted a longer seat post to the old steel framed bike I'm supposed to be stripping to nick the parts off. Rode it in today to see what it's like now that I can actually pedal it. Not too bad at all, now I have to prep the other frame then strip the working bike to put the parts onto the other frame. Seems a bit daft really.
Need to learn how to deal with tubs, that or swap the rims for clinchers. Feel I should give the tubs a bit of a go.

New pair of tyres on the commute machine, rear was looking a little worse for wear with close to 3000 miles on it and the front wasn't looking much better with over 5000 miles on it. Safe to say I've achieved my cost goal on the tyres of 1p/mile.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Cleaned the commute bikes drive chain which is no doubt why it rained yesterday! Checked for pad wear and so on.

Tyres though have picked up some war wounds from 3k of miles across gravelly parks and glass strewn bike paths, but almost no wear, the rear some of the lines on the tread are getting faint! Marathon Plus Touring so I’m assuming that they will succumb to damage rather than wear!

New tyres on the good bike, schwalbe ones, and new cassette and chain on the winter bike.

    Planning for all eventualities :)

Managed to index my gears properly (on the new Shimano that's not as sure a thing as it used to be)
Adjusted both disc brakes (also new to me)
And a whole heap of stuff - swapped out bars, bar tape, stem, to my preferred options from stock - slowly getting the CAAD to where it should be!

R770 are a lovely bit of kit, but I found the FD needed a fair bit of tweaking before it was smooth and light to shift.

Been having massive problems with shifting over the last few rides, couldn't work out why.

Had meant to have a good look during holidays, but failed miserably, so took the opportunity today to have a go.
Turned out i'd installed the HG-X chain the wrong way around (shimano lettering facing inwards) in the middle of the night last time i attempted to clean it.

Popped it the right way around, and hey presto, instantly better shifting. Flabbergasted isn't the word.
Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.
