The toilet was leaking from the bottom of the cistern, so I had to isolate the cistern, drain the tank, remove the cistern and replace the "spud" washer. I wanted to replace the bracket thing on the bottom also, but it was pretty much cemented on with mastic or something. Thankfully it was ok without that fix and no leak.

Now however, there is no water coming out of the hot water taps! After a google search it may be because of air in the system so will try to fix that later. No experience with messing with plumbing so quite pleased i fixed the cistern.

Fitted my Di2 sprinter switches to the S5 last night, how I have lived without them for this long is beyond me. They’re bloody fantastic!

Also cleaned up the drivechain on the CX bike. Now it’s shifting like a dream.

Also wet vacced the entire flat. Definitely the most laborious activity of the weekend.

Noticed the house was a bit chilly this morning, then thought the hot water seemed rather cold. Boiler wasn't working. Topped up the water pressure and turned it off and on again and all good. Plumber fettling god is me.
  • Another tube successfully killed (split around valve) while fitting the Gravdal tyres ready for tomorrow's commute... Trying to use the same 25-32mm tube that was on with the 32mm Houffalize tyre, for a 38mm tyre, was probably not the smartest move. ;)

Came back inside to grab the SV19A tube that was in my emergency commute kit, installed fine, I've now got the fun of trying to find another intact 38mm rated tube I can put in the emergency kit... Ideally before tomorrow morning!

    No?
    Oh.
(yes, i've currently got 28 inner tubes in the garage)

damn who knew fitting a road groupset (Tiagra 4700) would be such a PITA, everything went on just fine but the front mech design has changed, now it has this converter thing for inside/outside cable routing, erm what now?

that's not the only problem, fitting a road front mech on a hybrid the gap seems to be too big so i cant adjust the front mech without rubbing the chain in the highest settings, very very annoying. I'll give it another go tomorrow and if that fails i might try a triple mech with the first shift removed.

Previously i had this setup with campag shifters and it was fine.

  • My rear brake lever seemed to have gained a lot of travel, so I checked the rear brake pads on the bike I was using yesterday. Good job I did, the pads were worn right down, so new pads were the order of the day, it gave me a good excuse to try some new Clarkes ‘elite’ pads out. They are very good actually.

Replaced front brake cable, which snapped on Friday (horrible ride home with just the back brake). I only seem to get about 6 months/ 3000 miles out of my front brake cables, which is a bit rubbish, and they always snap just below the nipple. Suspect it's the Weinmann brake levers that cause the cable to bend ever so slightly every time the brake is pulled, rather than being pulled straight. 1960's brakes suck (but then the 1950's GB Coureur ones that I had on there before were even worse)

No I tend to only keep 1 or 2 in the saddle bag and possibly a few in the shed, the only bike that tends to puncture is the CX though much less since using tubeless tyres even if running tubes.

Strip down clean of roadie with complete drivetrain removal, clean, re-fit. It had completely stopped shifting at the rear due to gunked up RD. Upon re-assemble & pump of tyre, discovered a giant split in the tyre and I don't have a spare tyre :(

Strip down clean of MTB as it's the snow/ice bike, but fitting a new crankset. Front shifting is well and truly out though, really not sure of the problem. Think it might be a bent FD, given that it's the same one that had my ankle rammed into to when I got hit 2 years ago.

The Croix de Fer had a long list of minor niggles that needed recitfying - so I replaced the rear wheel, handlebar tape, both disc brake pads and cleaned up the BB. Best Saturday night I've had since my clubbing days

Opened the garage door looked at the bike and pinched both tyres to see if they had any air in them, decided it was enough. Glanced at the chain to check it wasn't rust coloured, shut the door and went back in for a cup of tea.

Removed the drive train off the winter bike, degreased everything, including the bottom bracket , I also removed both wheels gave the frame and the wheels a good wash and clean, built everything back up, it now looks to good to take out on the road :)

battled with Tacx vortex, what a ball ache to setup, anyway its setup and firmware updated on attempt 3, connected via ant+ to both garmins and bluetooth to my tablet, a two minute demo ride, power figures look as i'd expected but cadance on the Tacx is stupidly high.

First ride is planned for tomorrow morning, not sure im looking forward to gradients and road feel whilst turbo training

Dropped the stem on the commuter by a 5mm spacer and run a babywipe over the frame in preparation for going back on the bike later this week. I've got a cassette and chain on order too, it's a race to see what happens first.

Removed chainset and bottom bracket on MTB, as I wasn't convinced it felt right today.
Refitted, no difference. Removed front derailleur, soaked in gt85, and scrubbed again, refitted.
Replaced gear cable inner, no change to shifting performance. Amount of play in the derailleur feels quite high, and it is ten + years old now with periods of distinct neglect.
Think it's a new front derailleur time.

Back on the bike from Wednesday and I’d forgotten how crappy the shifting was since I had the frame replaced, so yesterday I fitted a new chain and cassette at lunchtime. Rode home last night and if anything it was even worse, fitted a new inner cable this morning but it still wasn’t great on the stand, so sacked it off as a bad job and caught the train. Guess what I’m doing this weekend....

Not sure what it could actually be though, cable outer was new with the new frame and has only done a couple of hundred miles, chain and cassette we’re knackered so thought that would sort it. It all looks straight enough. Rear mech has probably done about 8000 miles so should still be fine, jockey wheels don’t look like ninja stars so assume they don’t need replacing.

If I can’t sort it I’m going to take it to cycle republic for a service and let them fix it for me

What's actually wrong with the shifting?
  • @prawny Have you tried playing with the B-screw, high-low screw of the RD (ideally with cable disconnected) and up to ~1 turn clockwise of the RD cable tensioner?

I’m normally pretty good at sorting the shifting but this has got me stumped.

I’ve messed with the b screw, high and low limits are fine it’s just not shifting properly in either direction. I can get it to shift down the cassette (harder gears) fine until I get past halfway down the cassette then it’s sluggish, and each upshift takes 2 clicks. If I get it so the upshifts into easier gears aren’t fine it takes 2 clicks to shift down minimum. It’s like the cable is filthy but it’s brand new.

I’ll probably take the whole cable off and check the run over the weekend in case it’s pinching somewhere. It feels ok in the hand though, I was worrying last nights that it’s a shifter problem, I don’t want to be forkingnout for shifters.

Not my bike but a new brake cable and fiddled with the tension of the v-brake of the Barista in the coffee shop I frequent, got a free coffee for my troubles which is I was going to ask for but she says she'll load up the app for me too with more.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Refitted my Eastway cross bike with gears. It came with Tiagra 4700, which I transplanted onto my crit bike last summer, then set it up single speed.

Ending up buying a Giant Conduct brake system for it, found it didn't get on well with the brake levers I was using, bought some cheap 4600 tiagra ones here - have now fitted new top pull cx70 front derailleur (getting hard to find, incidentally) and an old deore rear from the parts box to give it gears.

It'll now have slightly odd status as wet bike without mudguards (keeping the ice tyres on it for the moment) and reserve status for a pending london to edinburgh ride if the forecast is dire.

Still need to trim and bleed the hoses for the conduct system.

Worth having, couldn’t get the shifting 100% on my Kinesis when I first got it, fiddled for months. Got a hanger tool and sorted it first time.
