Looks a bit ugly with the nuts on top but with more time, tools and better material I could have drilled and tapped the holes on the corners. The white tape on the light is so I can position it and it not appear in camera frame.

Is your lower headset bearing leaking grease there?

No just crap off the road even though I've got mudguards on the bike.

I thought that's what riding in the rain was for? TBH I keep the bits that need to be clean/oiled up together but the dirt/grime on the frame stays put.

I think quite a lot of this stuff needs replacing soon... The front mech cable had got frayed at the BB, so it got removed, and while trying to fit the new one the left shifter stopped clicking or working. It has done nearly 31,000 miles though...

Tsk, tsk, not keeping track of mileage for your top cap or bar end plugs. :D Interested to know what happened 11,287 miles ago. And surprised your small chainring has lasted so long given your well-known propensity for spinning!

Will hit 10,000 miles (er, 16,094 km) on my Caadx on the ride home tonight. My first bike when I started commuting in late 2013: still at least one size too big. Debating whether to swap the bars for something skinnier to make it feel smaller.

ah yes, I should've added the actual frame - a Dolan ADX 2016 (warranty replacement for my previous Ti Dolan) - into the mix. Yes you guessed it, it too has done 11,287 miles, and I added a raft of new components when I built it up.

Most impressive I think are the BB bearings which are still as smooth as butter and have no play after all those filthy miles. They're Boca "yellow seal" SS-race Ceramic-ball jobbies, sourced from USA, around £40 per pair.

As for the small chainring, this is a myth perpetrated by TROLLS. I only use it for climbing and standing starts, except for now when I have no way of actually shifting to the big'un (left shifter just sourced on eBay).

I'm no troll! Anyway, I think rower's small ring has 39 teeth, not like my pathetic 34 tooth small ring.

HyRds fitted to the replacement Saracen frame. Lever throw is longer than ideal, but easy enough to lock up with, I'll look at putting some extra fluid in if I think it needs it.

Got to put proper pedals on, and fit some new guards and I'll be set for a commute return next week, can't wait.

Quick trip to the bike-basement this lunchtime to replace the left shifter on my Dolan. Right shifter is Chorus, left is now Super Record, purloined 2nd hand off eBay. I hope I'll be able to hold a straight line what with the asymmetry...

Bar-tape removed, rear brake-cable binned, front gear-cable binned, shifter removed and new one fitted, new gear cable fitted, bar tape re-fitted. All done in 25 minutes. Didn't have a new rear brake cable with me so I'll fit that later.

Looking forward to having some gears again on the way home...

the Ribble sportive is finally dead :(

super muddy ride today and the rear mech plus rear brake cable guides broke off, the front caliper has seized i think for the last time, i cant fit mudguards to the rear stays anymore because the carbon has been eaten away.

Just shy of 10 years, 2018 new turbo bike

    it lives again!!!!

epoxy the cable guides, removed the brakes and soaked them in degreaser with any luck the guides will hold

Fitted my Christmas present to the Pinnacle. A lovely Hope RX-4 brake for the front, to match the one at the back. The Shimano original surprisingly wasn’t leaking, but the Hope is just fantastic. So much more power and modulation.
  • Fitted a ultegra chainset to my winter bike as well as just changed my rear wheel bearings on it for the first time ever after watching you tube :D

Finally cleaned & replaced the inners on the road bike, preparing for the new year. Showed that as much as I thought the last segment of outer by the rd was a problem, it's nothing compared to the state of the piece at the brifter... Needs to be replaced in short order.

First time I've ever done inners, yay, go me. Only needs to last a few months until I finally get around to fitting the jagwire pro set I've had on the shelf for ages now (wanted to try the process with cheap stuff first)

This included taking the rd jockey wheels out and cleaning the bearings in them as they were grotty as hell.

Spent time on my kids bike, somehow the handlebars had been fully spun around and crushed the brake cable, meaning it was stuck on.
Which then meant I also had to fix the cantilever /spring brakes you find on cheap bikes... Wow,that took forever to try and get that right:-(

Popped a spoke on this morning's commute. New spoke added in the bike lot this afternoon without the benefit of a spoke key and decent screwdriver, or being able to take the cassette off.

Think the security guard was a little bemused by the sight of me doing all this in work clothes, given the amount of grime on my hands afterwards.

Seemed to hold up well on the commute home.

I've carried a spoke key for the last God knows how many years, and I took it out of my bag just before Christmas. Typical.

yesterday I popped the semi built CAAD12 in the car and dropped it off at the LBS to finish, they called this morning its ready to collect.

this is not my usual tactic but damned if i'm buying a shed load of new tools to fit BB30 nor do i cut carbon and one look at that internal routing had me heading for the hills, anyway i'm picking up on Sat.

    Yay new bike!

  • Was having issues with shifting so new chain, had a long cage derailleur to try so put that on before cutting length. Also put on new hanger to cover all the bases. Super smooth shifting now. Yay

Nothing this weekend. Really need to sort my rear shifting it’s really sluggish but I’m sick as a dog with a heavy cold. If I do go to work tomorrow my shifting will have to be crap.

Laid up with cough and cold here too :|
...went into garage to check out my Crosslight in the workstand, in case I felt well enough for a short ride later. Very draggy drivetrain. Closer inspection revealed the upper pulley bearings in rear mech had more or less seized. Dismantle, degrease, clean up, refit. Repeat with lower pulley bearings. Now turning freely again. That'll teach me for cycling through floodwater last weekend

Then proceeded to change the Vittoria Hyper Volyager 38mm on my Prolite Revos for 28mm Duranos, to see if they might zip the ride up a bit. Man, forgotten how tight tyres were to fit on those wheels!

Did venture out today in the 30mph+ winds. Not particularly bright with what now feels to be an emerging chest infection. Needed to tighten headset afterwards too....the wind and generally feeling crap made it difficult to tell if the Duranos were any "better" than the Hyper Voyagers after all. Didnt feel as plush at any rate, but also didnt feel any faster :(

I fitted a pair last week swapping over from 4Seasons and they feel noticably slower! A bit miffed as thought they'd be at least equal. On the plus side, the side walls are robust run at 85/90 psi - tested over potholes (not intentional) and cattle grids, they haven't cut up as badly as 4seasons, and the bike will feel that much quicker with GP4000s on come summer.

Replaced the blown out gp4000 with a Durano plus. The I tube was missing a 5p sized chunk that had obviously blown out!
Forgot a PITA new folded tyres are to fit.

Fitted new Andel track chainset to the Carlton to replace the chainset I destroyed before Christmas. Amazing how much difference 5mm makes on the crank arms (165 vs 170). Just feels odd. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Lost my top 4 gears last night on the caadx (105), which was really annoying given the rare tailwind. Shifter would tick away, but the RD wouldn't budge down the cassette. Get home, having missed a PB for want of gearing on which to apply the power awesome; took the bike inside the (newly refurbed) kitchen--dodging daggers being sent my way by the missus, but 't'was a fettling emergency--and extracted a stone that had somehow gotten lodged underneath the RD's H limit screw. My punishment for riding with gears in winter.

Front brake was sticking yesterday, probably owing to general salt and grime related corrosion. Gave it a bit of 3 in 1 oil on the pivots and springs, and all is good again today. So nice to have a bike with a brand new drivetrain, and everything working as it should. I really must maintain my bike more often.....
