Left crank creeking; seemed to be some play in it. Took it off, re-lubed the axle and re-fitted it. Hopefully, this will do the job.

@ITB - that looks great (ss/fg obviously not the mtb :))

Take it the frame didn't have vertical dropouts to start with? I'm looking to do the same with an inherited Ribble winter frame but it could be tricky 'cos of this.

No it's not a problem you just need to get the chain length just right, in some cases a half link chain might be needed, I've been running a FGSS for 2+ years with vertical dropouts.

I highly recommend the Miche 1/8th track chain, no rust or stretch even after 2 years, ace!

That charge saddle is terrible, that'll be coming off tomorrow.

Sure btw the FGSS thread is a goldmine of information.

Is it just the photograph, or are your arms really that long? That looks like quite a stretch to reach those hoods.

Am also taking copious notes: as mentioned elsewhere, there is an old 1980s 10 speed (badged as a BSA, but really a Raleigh) lugged steel road bike with 27" wheels hanging up in my parents' garage waiting for a bit of love. It was my Dad's way back when I could barely get my arm over the top tube, and is still in reasonable condition (I think). I can't decide whether it's worth doing a retro restoration job, or converting to SS (maybe even FG).

Dunno about the reach being overly long I do know that by pure chance every road bike I have has the same reach and saddle height, when setting up each bike I managed to set them by feel to the same measurements with 5mm, now that's just freaky.

As I get fitter and lighter I do tend to raise the saddle another 1/4 to 1/2 inch and lower the stem (flipped) this is not recommended for long days in the saddle, well not for me anyway but great for short fast sportives.

Ah just remembered, here's some advise for anyone thinking of converting an old 27" frame & forks, if you're lucky you'll be able to fit normal long reach brakes ie 57mm but in some cases you'll need really long reach ie 73mm, the later is a pain because you're limited to only a couple of cheap brands.

Of course you could just run 27" wheels but again this has its problems, seems no one makes decent rims, so you end up with cheap and heavy wheels.

    Sigh!

Just prepared my bike for a ride tomorrow.

And have now written out a shopping list for new back wheel, chain, cassette and middle chainring. Chain and gears would probably survive a few more rides yet but paranoid about the rim blowing out.

Not going for a ride tomorrow.

Finally got around to changing the chain and a lot of the drive chain this weekend, it had done about 6000 miles and when I measured up against the new one it had stretched in length by a few links and could bend it in a circle..in a direction its not meant to bend in!

    ... must do more maintenance!

    remove front right sticking brake
discover pads are nearly down to the holders
tighten front right brake boss to stop the spring plate swiveling
    free up front right brake
    refit brake
    check operation
    pump up tyres
    check chain stretch
    discover chain is >1% stretched
spot that I haven't put the screw holding the brake back in
    re-fit brake properly

On the weekend I degreased, cleaned, scrubbed, brushed, re-oiled my SCR and then I replaced the brake pads on the front and rear as well as replace on brake shoe.

This weekend I will replace the bar and stem of the Kharma.

Last night I removed the Stronglight bb and crankset from my FG and started to fit Miche ones to improve the chainline. At this point I realised I needed a campy bb tool so I opened some wine instead.

  • At the weekend cleaned and degreased a fortnight's worth of nastiness from my tourer. Tightened up cones on rear hub again. Looked at how concave the braking surfaces are getting - decided new wheels needed. Now spending time choosing new wheels. Excellent - soon to have shiny new toys!
    Cheers

    Good fettling session this afternoon.

Fitted the new cassette to the new back wheel
Fitted the new back wheel to the bike
Tried to fit the new chainring but gave up on the seized bolts - leave that to the LBS
Cleaned the chainrings in an attempt to get them as shiny as the new chain & cassette
Trimmed the new chain to the right length and fitted it
Cleaned the back tyre before transplanting it to the new wheel - can't go putting mucky old tyres on shiny new wheels can we
Cleaned the front wheel while I was at it
Noticed the front axle felt gritty so put some fresh grease in the hub
Noticed the front axle still felt gritty. Pondered new front wheel to match the rear
For its first time ever, deflated the tyre on the old wheel and transferred it to the new one
Retired the old back wheel to the shed. Bye bye.
Set about adjusting the front mech cos it's been rubbing on the chain, and discovered maybe the shifter is stuffed (105 STI, was only reading about it on here last week)
Pondered having the money to fix all this stuff.
  • Replaced the rear brake cable on my lad's bike, so he can now go to school on it.

Replaced the cassette on my tourer. Had already replaced the chian and a ride showed the new chain wasn't meshing properly with the old cassette. Had hoped it would

Swapped the high-normal rear mech for a low normal on the MTB to switch the operation of the shifters - it's now finger pull down and thumb push up. I also relocated the shifters and brake levers to more sensible positions and checked all nuts, bolts and fastenings.

Just replaced the HT2 bottom bracket on my CX. The right hand bearing was very dead and a sod to remove.
Luckily I had a rotary washing line.
  • Finally got round to fitting a pair of Wellgo B-54 pedals onto the Pylon8, along with replacing the original saddle with the Charge Spoon bought a while back (its rusty brown looks much better on the orange Pylon than the navy F5C) yesterday...

Happy to report both bits of equipment passed their trial run with flying colours! :D

Repaired my rear derailleur. Following a slight crash, the cage's return spring had skipped out of position, and was magically holding the cage in the full "aft" position.

Replaced the chain and cassette, tinkered with cables, and it all appears beautiful.
Feeling quite pleased with myself, apart from the replacement derailleur having already been dispatched.

Now, if only I had a front wheel (at the LBS being re-spoked/trued)

Fitted a new front brake and had to swap the main through bolt which was too short on the new brake.

Bottom bracket now needs replacing and the rear deraillure cable. Got the bit's - just need to get on with it!
