Switched the 105 shifters on the "cheap" road bike to Ultegras, and a corresponding 9 speed cassette. Woo.
  • Fitted a KMC Missing Link to the road bike; will do the same to the iron gate when I work out whether I'm going for those or Connex links.

Took the Prince out of hibernation (the spare bed, covered in goose down duvets) yesterday, had a very thorough clean, fitted a new KMC SL chain and finally fitted these bad boys:

Did a major strip, clean & reassembly on the brakes, wheels, & front + rear mechs when I discovered that the freewheel wasn't latching - the cassette could spin freely in either direction. Got it back together just in time for it to be too late in the day to go anywhere. Worth it though - the bike looks like new again.

Cleaned my chain until it's so dry it sounds like a chainsaw, which was nice on the way home this evening, might add some lube in the morning

Transfered lights from the 'hack' (which is poorly!) to the mountain bike so I can use it for the daily commute. I even adjusted the saddle, ie raised it by about 3" so I don't look as if I'm riding a BMX bike......

For the last few weeks I've been fiddling with the SPD cleat on my right shoe every few days to try and shut up my grumbling knee. Last night I discovered one of the bolts had disappeared and the adjustable plate they screw into had cracked. Off to the LBS for new cleats. Replaced the right one this morning (the left one is still in good shape) and spent an hour riding round the park and adjusting it to get it spot on, and for now, my knee seems happy.

Oh and I discovered that the rattling noise that I thought had been the rear mudguard coming loose, and so kept tightening up its bolts, was in fact from the metal hook on the ever-useful bungee cord on the pannier rack

Fitted seat post, saddle and collar to MTB, mmmm super white, can't wait to ride it, but need to do some cable work.

Removed brake from tourer ready for the new Miche callipers tomorrow, after I drill out the forks and frame  Fitted an old / new chain and indexed the down tube shifters 8) giving me a smooth 14 gears, what more could you ever need. Now do I put the speed king 700x35 on or stick with the Michelin slick 700x23 ...?

Fixed a puncture on the CX and re-fitted the front canti brakes, white tyres are such a bad idea. Took apart the broken crud racer guards and fitted a carbon oversize mount for my Magicshine P7 headlight, I'm determined to use the damn thing.

Fixed puncture on the hybrid ice stud tyres then swapped over to the road slicks.

Raised my saddle height by 1cm 8)

ITB: How long are you still planning to take building this bike!?! This is like an epic! :p

This morning I de-mudded my 'crosser in preparation for re-muddying it tomorrow. :)

Yeh I know, but i'm in no rush and i've really neglected the fleet lately what with all the "riding" I looked at my CX this morning jeez it's so dirty again and I cleaned it twice last weekend and once during the week.

Bike building when you have all the parts I find somewhat disappointing, its over so quickly.

Put a new bar space thingie on the bars as the Minoura Space Grip on the rear broke yesterday :( I was riding along and felt something on my thigh and thought it was the mounting strap from my cateye, when I stopped at the cashpoint I looke at it and it was pointing to the side of the road. If I'd carried on, no doubt I'd carried on I would have lost the rear lights and Space Grip. Luckily I managed to use the front one and put the Topeak BarXtender on the bars.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Put back together my fixie after getting the frame repaired and powder coated.
Put some waxoyl into the frame.
    Replaced brake blocks and cables.
Used copper ease on every bolt I refitted.
Replaced the bolts with allen headed ones.
    Replaced chain and rear sprocket.
Even colour coded the zip ties with the frame !

Took me ages to refit the mudguards so they didn't foul the tyre and brakes. Managed it eventually though.

Just spent another ten minutes cleaning and re-oiling my chain in preparation for the first proper ride of 2010 tomorrow. Then I looked out the front door ... bugger. It's snowed again. Only a light covering but it'll freeze tonight. Not going to risk going out on icy roads tomorrow.

    How long til spring?

Sure, but there is a certain anticipation when you're collecting all the parts ready for the build. :) I love getting all the bits ready and then blitzing the build on a Friday night, enjoying the fruits on the Saturday.

Laced up and pt the initial tension on the wheel I'm building up: Mavic TN719 on a Shimano M529 high flange 29er hub with DT Competition spokes. Looks sweet. Will probably true up the lot this evening (if I don't have too many beers after Herne Hill, that is).

After ride on thursday kept looking at my chain thinking it was dead. good clean on friday morning and thorough scrub of chain and its come back to life and is great. only problem was i had to go and get a new sram powerlink as i chucked half down the drain with dirty water :(

need to adjust gears slightly as having bit of trouble getting onto big ring yesterday, but havigna day of rest from bikes today

I was unable to move to the smallest ring on the cassette when I looked at the bike yesterday. Indexing gears is something I shy away from but a quick fiddle with the tension doobrie in the derailleur and it seems to be ok now. Not sure about how to get rid of the rubbing chain on the front deraiilleur though.

Put the ice tyres back on the hybrid, yes it's fecking icy and snowing

Car is also dead, damn computer system displayed some sort of MTFD message it's too cold i'm not going anywhere then turned everything off, I think I heard a very quiet "sorry about the war" before it went is meltdown.

  • Put bike up on stand to give it a whizz, having been concerned that I may have over-tightened the chain (fixie) but been advised that if it keeps running for awhile rather than stopping after one or two turns, it's probably ok. Seemed ok, but the gritty grindy noise was bothering me (don't notice while actually riding) so I spent half an hour cleaning chainand cogs front and rear, getting rid of as much grit and general crud as possible, then re-lubed. Doesn't sem to have made a great deal of difference, but it stands to reason it'll have helped at least a bit.

Went to try and fix the new computer (it's not picking up my speed). It's one where the sensor attaches using cable ties and I can't seem to get it secure in the correct position.

Was also going to give the bike a wash but my hands are freezing enough already and I don't want to turn the back garden into an ice rink.

Fitted a pair of Travel Agents yesterday to correct the cable pull on my braking system because I have V-brakes with drop-bar STi levers as my bike is one of the Tricrosses from the period where they (Specialized) thought this was a good fix for the judder.

    Do they work?

    Yes and no.

They double the cable pull alright, no worries there, but they also introduce a fair amount more friction into the system so the brake arms don't spring back as far, plus I now have to pull the levers noticeably harder to get the same amount of braking force.

I'll leave them on though, partly because I can't be arsed to faff around again and partly because I will admit that the post-new-brake-fitting fettling where you get everything centred and avoiding the pads rubbing was a lot quicker than it has been previously.

Also took the opportunity to fit new pads as the current weather had destroyed the old ones.

I fettled my brother's girlfriend's little boy's new bike (shaped object) on the weekend. It's designed for a 7 year old but the brake levers are adult sized, so I had to adjust a screw on each lever to bring them in before changing the length of cable. Pretty simple, but looked impressive :)
  • I put my Birdy back into service last night, lots of TLC and tightening things up and 2 hours hunting through my sares box for just the right size bolt to fix the light bracket that I'd forgotten I'd cannibalised for someone elses bike. I als managed to get my big mirror fettled to work with the bendy bars I've got on this one.

I rode the wee beastie into work today for the first time since September.

mixed feelings TBH, the entire bike is lighter than the alfine hubbed rear wheel on my new regular mount but I felt about 100 feet off the ground with such a low CoG all of a sudden, it took a few miles to get my mojo back on it.
