Winter commuter is a standard with a 25t cassette my Scott is a compact which will be getting lots of use next week in the Alps
I used the big ring all day today apart from the 14% hill on the club ride, that was brutal but I managed to stay three cogs down from the lowest gear.

After a few years not biking I pulled my Giant CRS 3 FS out of the shed. I bought it from eBay a few years ago for £50! I rode it twice locally and really struggled with it. I know it's a size too big but it felt like an aircraft carrier. It does need some work...needs a front dérailleur, a chain and a good service. Never knew much about it other than Giant was a good brand.
Anyway, I bought a Carrera Vanquish road bike, a couple of weeks ago as I thought the Giant was pretty poor and it was like night and day! Loved the shiny new Vanquish, so easy to ride and handle. I was all set to bin/eBay the Giant but thought I'd give it a last chance.
The best and smpleist thing made a huge difference: tyres pumped up properly! I only had a rubbish hand pump, couldn't have been more than 30/40 PSI in the things. I used the track pump I bought for the Carrera and got them too 80 PSI. Transformed the bike. Rolled beautifully, felt lighter and much more nimble.
I also raised the seat by 1 cm and dropped the bars by 4cm by taking out a couple of spacers and turning the stem over. I've been lurking on here for a few weeks and learned a lot about the general adjustment of the bike. Need a couple of tools (chain tool, etc) and I'll be well on my way. Need to learn a few things like indexing gears
I found the right model to have a look at the right specs and I'm going to replace the chain, cassette and dérailleur and bars. Think I need a true flat bar. Trying to do it as cheaply as possible, don't really want to spend more than about £50 on parts. I've just got two Schwalbe Marathon Plus and a Lezyne Micro Drive in the three for two at Halfords but I have a £40 gift card paying most of that.0 -
Welcome and we'll done
If you haven't already then get thee to YouTube there's a ton of good videos, looks for bikeradar, park tools guides as a starting place.
Look out for the next lidl or aldi sale and grab a track pump (£5) you should be looking for about 90-110 psi on those tyres depending on your weight, trust me having the right tyre pressure will make a world of difference and you need to check your tyre pressure at least once a week, after a while you know what pressure suits you best and will be able to tell by a quick pinch if its right.
Watch the sales and deals like the halford 3 for 2 and you should be set with what you have for a few years to come.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Swapped in two new GP 4Seasons, I was going to keep the old one still on the bike (the other was the one binned in Buxton after exploding) until I looked more closely and found several full penetration (stop giggling at the back) holes.
I may have to rethink the choice of tyre for the canal path rides as some sections are very rocky and while the 4Seasons cope, you really do wear them out much more quickly. I think I'll finish off the Tricross rebuild and fit 32C tyres to it for days I want to go light trailing.
Also gave the chain a thorough cleaning and readjusted the rear brakes as best I could. I need to strip the rear BB7 calliper as the inner adjuster is seized. Must say though: really smooth ride in on new tyres and freshly sorted chain.Chunky Cyclists need your love too! :-)

Tonight I have fitted the Schwalbe Marathons and new inners. Managed to do it quite easily even with 700 x 35. Put 80 psi in them. Will try it tomorrow for ten mins before I go out on the road bike.
I also changed the chain. Very worn on the old one. Still need that front Dérailleur, maybe get one at the weekend and now it's become apparent that the rear is probably twisted. Might get it to my LBS rather than faff around.
Won't get to do the commute on it for at least week as I'm making a guest appearance at a different store to cover sickness so got a bit of time to sort it out fully.0 -
built my cross bike...
swapped chainrings (46x39) from the non shimano chainset (race face cx) to the ultegra chainset so i could use my power meter.
new seatpost as the old one didnt hold the saddle properly when applying pressure
fitting intermediate tyres pumped to 40psi

Well the Giant now has a front dérailleur. Can't get it set up properly so I'll take it to my LBS when I can. I also replaced the battered rear mech. I seem to have that running fairly well. It's coming together at last.
I'll be getting a shorter handlebar stem for it (140 mm at the mo) and some bar ends too. The idea is to commute and I'll get a baby seat so I can take my son out with me on my day off rather than go in the car.
I do have a Carrera Vanquish for my road stuff, that got the ubiquitous Shimano 520 pedals tonight. I'm sure the Diadora MTB shoes I got for £4 total on eBay will be fine!0 -
Did some adjustments to my MAFAC Racer brakes to get more toe in on the front brake shoes. We shall see if this will help to fix the current squealing banshee of hell noise that they've been making. I'm not feeling optimistic.....1938 Hobbs Tandem

After snapping the chain at the weekend the new one arrived yesterday and the quick link pliers the previous day so a new chain was fitted in 5 minutes. Had to adjust the front mech properly as it moved slightly when the chain snapped so spent far too long doing that, not helped by replacing the gear cable in the 5700 shifter.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Adusted the rear derailleur so I can get the smallest cog. Not that I use it very often.0

Having seen the weather forecast for this week I refitted the guards to the Kinesis. I then carried on by taking the chain off to clean it before trying a new lube (Squirt that seems highly recommended. I had just hung the chain up to dry when I was called in to eat, then settled to watch the Big Blue on the telly and completely forgot about my chain until about midnight. As a result I have had to drive in today. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.0

Fitted a Tektro R559 to the front of my fixed wheel bike, to replace the squealing, howling Mafac Racer.
Stops the bike so much better, and in silence. Peace at last!
The pads on the Mafac are ragged, embedded with aluminium shards, and look slightly burnt (there was a definite burning smell when I put the anchors on hard). Perhaps in fairness, a change of pads might have also done the trick.1938 Hobbs Tandem
