Cleaned out a load of corrosion and crap from my front caliper and greased it thus saving myself the vast amount of money that ITB wanted me to spend on a Chorus replacement

He's buying us beer at the Morpeth on the 18th.
Will believe that after I've seen it, it's been photographed and then stored in the cloud for all to agree and confirm it did actually occur.Le Cannon [98 Cannondale M400] [FCN: 8]

Replaced the back axle on a bike belonging to a friend of the boy. The las is supposed to be doing the off road L2B with us and his bike broke. Swapped the axle, straightened the mech hanger and adjusted the limit screws to stop the chain meeting the spokes. Then realised the chain was way too long so lopped a couple of links out. Tweaked the brakes a smidge and all is well. Well enough anyway. Lubed my chain and pumped my tyres up a bit.0

Dynamo light and wheel fitted to the Equilibrium. New rear wheel is gorgeous, Ambrosio Zenith Endurance hub is smoother than any I've ever seen. Trying Vredestein Xtreme Weather tyres this year after a couple of falls in the wet last month. Seem remarkably grippy, and quite fast. Like them so far.0

Just built new wheels for the new Ti commuter/audax/winter bike. Pacenti SL23 on Son Delux front and Record rear, 32 3x with Sapim D-Light. Running tubeless with Stans tape and Hutchinson Intensive 25s.
To be fitted, along with Supernova front and rear lamps, sometime next week.0 -

Not sure whether to put this in rants or fettling, but it is nonetheless a fettling-related rant.
My chain started skipping teeth on my Dolan last week. It does all my wet riding, my chain-length-checking tool was showing well beyond 0.5% elongation, not quite 0.75%, and on checking it had done 2,200 miles including all my wet-weather riding. Fair enough I thought. New cassette and chain arrived on Friday so I fitted them over the weekend.
2 rants:
1. As I was removing the old (Chorus 11) cassette I gave it a quick inspection: the 16t was cracked all the way through! No wonder it had been skipping.
2. Actually measuring the chain length alongside the brand new one, under a little tension, showed that it was in fact only 5mm i.e. only 0.37%, as opposed to my gauge telling me 0.6-0.7% ish. Gauge is a piece of useless rubbish
Grrrr unnecessary expenditure for new chain/cassette, I'll try to get another individual 16t and keep the used combo as backup.Dolan Titanium ADX 2016

Replaced the agricultural non-series Sora-level rear derailleur with a 105
Replaced the worn chain
Replaced the worn cassette and "oh, oops" a new FC-CX50 crankset "fell on" as well.
Followed by an extensive period of tinkering to get the gears to work 99% of the time. Still some indexing issues to resolve though - the shift from 7th to 8th & 8th to 9th are the only transitions with an issue - I may break down and go to the local "gear wrangler"0 -
Cleaned chain on commuter and fiddled with the bloody 105 indexing again, still not perfect, slow dropping down. Found that the cable had dug further into the shifter body after having to remove the chewed up cable guide after the ferrule failed and the outer fouled it. Hmm, new shifter probably required. May still be rear derailleur or cabling so those probably need replacing too, and come to think of it the front shifting can't be perfect else I'd use it more often. Went shopping. Found spare cable guides for the shifter were available. Took the Ultegra DI2 upgrade kit out of the shopping basket and bought the cable guide instead.
Fitted spare cable guide before going away on holiday. Rode bike last week and this, shifting not as good as before. Checked today and cable guide is moving inside the shifter when I shift  Will try epoxying in place and if that doesn't work then I'll take it out completely and see if it's okay again."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

Finally putting some ebay/second hand acquisitions to use:
Removed Pedals from both bikes.
Removed cranks from both bikes.
Opened bin and hurled FSA Omega in with all the force I could muster
Cleaned both BB Shells, knocked out old bearings, installed ceramic BB30 bearings (I'm not a flash git. The brother is a mech. engineer and can get these things for buttons)
Fitted (second hand) Hollowgram SL to the CAAD. Fair to say this is a tricky job, as the clearance for Shimano 11-speed front mechs is *tight*. About 4mm at worst. But it is flipping lovely in form and function. Adjusted gears slightly to compensate. Test ride. Grin. Tea.
Continued to strip the Synapse to fit the mish-mash 5800/6800 stuff I picked up cheap.
Tiagra kit is being donated to an old steel frame soon-ish.
Swore loudly and at length in attempting to get the braking just *right*. Long story short. Long drops are never just *right*, but they can get close.
Swore again at cheap cables that frayed repeatedly until I tinned the ends with solder, which I haven't needed to do in years.
Realised I'd neglected to fit a barrel adjuster for the front mech. Swore venomously. Pulled the cable up tight with pliers, wedged the mech out a little from the low stop, and tightened it up. Shift is *perfect*. Decide to not look at sideways lest it goes wrong.
Fit cassette, fit chains.
Quick spin up the street for the Synapse.
Grin. Tea. A most satisfying evening.0 -

Fitted a set of schwalbe black jack tyres to my daughters too small MTB jeez I should have done that a couple of years ago, aside from being the 350g per tyre lighter they're actually real tyres not the usual crap you get on kids bikes.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Well I've given the discs another scrub so should see if it's made any difference in the wet tonight;fine in the dry this morning and gave them some hard stops so we'll see what happens.Prob just going to have to put up with it;at the least peeps will hear my when I'm braking to turn at the bottom of mill road bridge in Cambridge (maybe  )Ridley Helium SL (Dura-Ace/Wheelsmith Aero-dimpled 45 wheels)

New Jagwire Elite Nokon-style cables and the 105-equipped commuter is now finally shifting ok. Believe it was the in-line barrel adjuster that was broken and introducing play in the shifting - should've changed it when I fitted the last cable set. Also tracked the annoying cracking noise each pedal revolution to the pedal itself (surprise surprise - tho it spun fine unpressured). Swapped pedal with one from the weekend bike and it's fine. Bad pedal on weekend bike - same cracking noise. Tried to check bearings in spindle and after spending a good quarter of an hour playing chase the loose ball bearings on the patio decided to get another pair. R550s purchased, £29 with cleats (needed a new set anyway) from PBK, lighter than the 105 metal pair they're replacing. Silent running"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

Better this morning on the wet commute, the odd squeek here and there mostly when braking after a long stretch but noise goes again after a good hard brake.Anyway much better so a happy bunny now .Ridley Helium SL (Dura-Ace/Wheelsmith Aero-dimpled 45 wheels)

I finally switched my WINTER commuter from SPD's to look exustar pedals, they fit the same cleats and feel a bit harder to clip in/out which I prefer.

How do you find them? I thought they were awful until I re-greased the bearings. The annoying thing is that they took a Shimano tool to disassemble, rather than the Look one I already had. You'd think that Look compatible might mean more than just the cleat.0 -

Out with the old ...
In with the new ...
Not very sensible, but a necessary stage of my (also not very sensible) project to get (aesthetically pleasing) power on my fixie. Just waiting for Sigma Sports to come through. Naturally, DA track chainrings only start at 45T so I'm now running 45x15, which is a touch high (79.1") and only has one skidzzz patch, but will see how I get on before admitting defeat and dropping back down to 45x16.0 -
Planet X re-fit was partially done this week-end;Axiom 'guards fitted ok,some issues with the XT/105 1X10 conversion though.Going to try a new cable and poss an in-line adjuster as I think it's a tension issue.
Did seem ok actually on the road but it's still iffy at the extremes of the cassette;nice and smooth though.Ridley Helium SL (Dura-Ace/Wheelsmith Aero-dimpled 45 wheels)
