I'd assumed my rear pave was done for until yesterday having a coffee with Attica he showed me a PIC of the CX he was riding, almost canvas. Perhaps I'm being to cautious ?

Fixed the back brake on the Kinesis. The banjo bolt connecting to the Parabox had loosened slightly allowing air into the system. I think the flexing as the forks turn caused it to loosen, might look at rerouting the hoses. Tightened it up and a quick bleed and all is well once more.

Last night "fixed" the annoying click that was coming from the rear derailleur with a clean, oil and re-indexing of the gears.

Annoying click comes back halfway through the commute. New chain maybe needed.

Clicking is unlikely to be the chain

My Marin decided to chuck the chain off as I pulled away from a set of lights the other weekend, and then also whilst pulling away from a set of lights, but at higher speed and more dangerously, it seemed to slip a full half revolution (Just managed to stay upright) but the chain stayed on the middle cog (It's a triple) this time.

I have a suspicion it might be the middle cog that is the issue, but as I do not have one of these, and instead have new Ultegra chain and cassette, decided to lob those on and see how we go.
Also took the opportunity (Now I have the tool and the know how) to straighten the rear drop out that has been bent since I bought the bike second hand.

On a half day today, getting a quick 35 in, and then back to watch Le Tour :D

Lightly greased saddle rails to stop em creaking and the stem cover creak has returned the bastard... I think they all knew I've a new bb inbound to replace that creaky bastard and all wanted a piece of the action.

Must attend to my saddle/seat clamp but only remember when I hear it on the ride to/from work.

After putting a bald spot on my rear tyre due to a car pulling out on me at a junction 500 miles ago I finally replaced the Conti GP4seasons tyre. A bit pee'd off I only got 2000 miles out of it compared to the 6000 of the last one but that was helped by swapping it onto the front wheel at 4500 miles.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

uuugh, stem creak came back with a vengeance and bb is spoiling for a fight with mr replacement who will win tomorrow. Gearing under pressure is awful atm so that needs sorted on the trainer too. On the stand it shifts lovely and smoothly...

New shifter cable and outer - I had forgotten what good gear changing was like. Need to make sure I don't leave this too long next time

Replaced the ruined Force rear derailleur, hanger and cabling on the good bike after yesterday's incident. Everything appears to work ok. Indexed almost straight away - only a 1/4 turn of the barrel adjuster needed - SRAM is so easy to work with. Rear 404 is in the shop, waiting to see if it just needs new spokes or if the hub/rim has also been affected by so many spokes being ripped out.

Cleaned chain on commuter and fiddled with the bloody 105 indexing again, still not perfect, slow dropping down. Found that the cable had dug further into the shifter body after having to remove the chewed up cable guide after the ferrule failed and the outer fouled it. Hmm, new shifter probably required. May still be rear derailleur or cabling so those probably need replacing too, and come to think of it the front shifting can't be perfect else I'd use it more often. Went shopping. Found spare cable guides for the shifter were available. Took the Ultegra DI2 upgrade kit out of the shopping basket and bought the cable guide instead.

I've found this to be the case. Sram is just much easier to work with.

heh, nice work RSA for fitting a 19 mm spindle and not informing me exceptionally obviously so when I open it up to replace with a nice cheaper standard hollowtech 2 bb I can't... well played - for shimano that is.

However I greased the shit out of it and it was much better rather than sounding like 10 spanners in a washing machine it had been. Replacement is a semi-compact 105 on "cheap" from probikekit... :D

Still need to sort the bent hanger n mech - if I do that I can borrow my brothers rs80's for ride100 :D

Grease saddle also nice n silent now - lovely.

After getting the badge of honour on my calf last week I gave the drivetrain on my Culver a clean, compared to the SS it's a right PITA with the extra chainring, sprockets and rear mech.

New shifter cable and outer - I had forgotten what good gear changing was like. Need to make sure I don't leave this too long next time

Despite faffing with the barrel adjuster and limit screws my rear shifting was Impossible to sort out and I couldn't get into the smallest sprocket at all. The jockey wheels were flopping all over the place, and when I tried to take them out for a clean and lube both mounting bolts rounded off. Apart from the inner cable, which the 105 shifter seems to eat every 2 years, the whole lot is 8 years old so it owes me nothing.

So I bought a rear mech alignment tool, a Shimano gear cable kit and a 5700 rear mech. Monday night I had a go with the alignment tool. Wow, the hanger was bent quite a way! And satisfyingly easy to straighten with the tool. (Why did I not get one sooner!). Shifting into the 12t sprocket was once more possible, but upshifts were still a bit sluggish.

So on Tuesday night I recabled and fitted the new rear mech. Took my time and used the Dremel to grind the cut ends of the outers perfectly square / flat. Also fitted a slightly longer loop to the rear mech. Brief squeaky bum moment when checking the indexing; clicked into the largest sprocket to hear the tinkling of spokes  Fortunately it was the end of the untrimmed inner cable :D

Oh my god! How good is the shifting now! You forget how good it can be when it slowly deteriorates like that. It's like having a new bike. Like you, I'm determined not to leave it so long next time. Such a quick and easy job.

My brilliant LBS persuaded me to learn to fix the derailleur hanger a few years ago - they know that I like doing the maintenance but I mentioned that I was about to give up on the indexing and get them to do it. The boss said he would sell me the alignment tool and if it worked all for the good, if it didn't he would take it back, refund me, and then look at the indexing.

new 105 semi-comp on over the weekend with replacement bb has enabled glorious silence to reign while about - it's bliss. Fixed the bent hanger/arm so it shifts properly too. Lovely. Now just ordered a 28-11 and a new chain to go with it. Unlikely to be on before ride100 but we'll see...

Rebuilt loose ball square taper bottom bracket on my Pearson with new balls, as it had been clicking since the rain on Sunday. Managed to strip the crank extractor thread on my Campag Veloce crank though, which is not good. If anyone has a spare in their spares box (170mm), let me know....

On the plus side, I can confirm that with some lateral thinking, it is possible to do a full bottom bracket rebuild with the LHS crank still attached.

Getting sick of indexing the rear derailleur, new chain and cassette 500 miles ago, so I've bit the bullet and got a cable set to see if that helps matters.
Also, new pads. I'm no expert, but I think these may be passed their best. (That's how it seemed coming down a mile long 6% hill last week)

    Derailleur hanger bent?

Getting ready for Saturday's London Bike ride, plus the Brompton Urban Challenge.
The Brompton TT Special is up and running.
A few mods - disc wheel replaced with a wheel to match the front, plus Carbon seat post instead of the Titanium one to give that all over "black look".

    Derailleur hanger bent?
Good point. New cables seem to have the same problems - shifts down the cassette fine apart from into the two smallest cogs, shifting up the cassette jumps around in the middle.
I did go down on the DS in the February snow, probably changed the cassette and chain about 6 weeks later thinking they were worn. AAAARRRGHH!!!!!

Honestly you can get "fairly close" by just holding up a straight edge parallel with the the hanger and then just bending it with a pair of adjustables or a vice...

Replaced rear tyre (worn down to the carcass, nice), chain and back block. The plastic spacers in the cassette have come to pieces, anyone seen that before (it's a Tiagra back block so the largest sprockets are not on a carrier)?

swapped out my 23T cassette for a 27T replacing the chain at the same time and for good measure the gear cable inner and outer, reindexed and general crap removed from the rear derailleur jockey wheels.

tomorrow mornings club ride will tell if i've balled it up or not.

i've only had a quick test ride down the road but the 27T feels really weird, very low but i bet it won't once i'm crawling up a mountain.
