Got back from 45 miles of rain, pain, darkness and a failed (to recharge correctly) Creebay light.

    Making sure I got my 15 hours in: http://app.strava.com/challenges/cyclin ... fteen-2014

I went to clean the chain and noticed that the lower jockey wheel is totally shot:

    12893055373_ac19032a1f_b.jpg

    Top is OK:

    12893079393_be733ec630_b.jpg

Any ideas what would cause this?

Top jockey, cranks and cassette are all OK and I'm about four chains in, slightly sluggish shifting on the back (2 up one down between some, probably needs indexed) but otherwise no worries.

Has the wrong sized wheel been mistakenly fitted? Odd that it is so different from the upper wheel.

    They are Veloflex Corsas.

The tyres I replaced were 25mm Vittoria Paves

Worked on my old Frenchie; new front brake and changed into a make-shift single speed. Its old Simplex parts were really getting more maintenance than pleasure, so I got rid of all that. Cassette and chain rings are still attached, but once I get a good feel about the current gearing (42x17) I might buy a fixed wheelset.

One bloody big yommer, one removal kit, a chisel and some swearing later I've got the old BB30 bottom brackets out. They were in a hell of a state: One of them absolutely seized solid, and the other so notchy you can count the bearings in there.

So the shell is now spotless, the bottom of the frame equally so and ready to have the new Praxis kit (which has just turned up at work) to be fitted

Fettling from KB and no mention of spoke replacement.
I pottered about in the garage and did some work on the motorbike engine. I really should finish it and sell the thing, then buy more bicycles.

I've not ridden it since the last spoke replacement  It was while doing that last change that I found the borked BB.

I'll be cycling tomorrow so we'll see then.

Pumped the tires up, raised saddle back up by the required 6 mm it keeps slipping down progressively every two weeks or so. Lovely to be in the perfect position.

Minor change - hopefully an improvement.

Not wheel related. Or even grime related!.......

  • Built a new back wheel for the BSO commuter: rim off wheel (A) with knackered hub, hub from wheel (B) with knackered rim.
Four hour gig including tea drinking.
My top tips: start with the stripped bare rim alongside the full wheel. Move spokes one at a time from (B) to (A). Oil the nipples as you go along. If the corners of the nipple start to get turned smooth by the spanner and it won't grip, take that little bugger right off and bin it; swap for a spare or it'll haunt you.
I've ridden it 10km and all OK so far. If it lasts three months I'll be reasonably happy I didn't waste that afternoon, or the precious metals that have been decorating the front yard for months. Gotta ride home now... No tools on board... What could possibly go wrong..?

Praxis kit fitted and farking hell that was stiff!!!

By some complete stroke of luck I happened to have two fitting kits for the external cups so was able to get the damn thing on but I was near putting my whole weight on it at the end

Boy is it easy to turn that crank now.

Rebuilt the touring bike after the South American misadventure in November. New handlebars, replaced the missing wiring, new cables, new bar tape...it doesn't look like new but at least it's now rideable again!

  • Planning to get the bike up on the neighbour's turbo tonight to do a quick home bike fit after the recent changes to the bike. It felt alright on first ride but will double check seat height, seat angle and position in seat clamp and cleat positions.

Removed white 120mm stem and fitted black 110mm stem.

I've settled on black but not sure if I need 110mm or 120mm.

Chain off and dropped it into a 2 pint milk bottle and gave it a good shake with a sprinkling of degreaser, left ot dry overnight and re-lubed this morning with less lube than I did previously.

Ditto on the indexing, chuffin annoying to click or get the CLUNK (WTF WAS THAT) when starting off and the drivetrain decides to reset itself. Ideas for silencing rattly lights or cycle computers? Off putting on the smooth (hah yeah right) roads of london.

Mate, it's worth me making him a cup of coffee-that-looks-like-gravy every half an hour just for knowing what a barrel adjuster actually is.
