This morning I noticed my chain was noisy. I thought it just needed oiling but when I got around to looking at it the chain had managed to slip over the out side of the bracket on the rear derailer outside of the top jockey wheel. Oddly despite the noise (and damage to the chain and derailer) I was faster today than I've been all week. Anyway, sorted it and and oiled the chain.

Now I'm wondering if I should nip[ the bracket in with some pliers or if that would mess up the derailer even more.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Fitted a new Izumi chain to replace the SRAM one which snapped in the middle lane of Wandsworth roundabout at rush hour - that was fun. Also fitted Conti Gator Hardshells after 3 punctures in 2 days.

Anyone got a specialist device or fool-proof home-brew substitute for removing BB86 p/f bottom brackets? Screwdriver/bit of metal pipe as suggested on the BR article didn't work last time and almost destroyed my frame in the process.

Fitted the 'new' rear wheel to the SS yesterday and the clean wheel looked out of place with the dirty drivetrain so that had a good clean. Chain into a 2 pt milk carton with degreaser and a good shake, wash and repeat. Baby wipes on chainset and freewheel. Shiny clean for the commute today after lightly lubing the chain when I got up this morning.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

How hard can it be changing brake cables.... sigh.

and what's this about in cable adjusters for bb7s? My old bb5s did not have them

Repaired a p*ncture in the rear tube this morning - annoying as I fixed the same wheel on Monday.

Also tried to get my rear brake working. Kinda succeeded, but it's not great. The cable itself is gunged up in the outer, and I couldn't get it to push through, nor did I want to take the bar tape off.

I got it working a bit better by taking the "travel agent" off, but overall the brakes on my Tricross are complete crap.

    Cleaned bikes yesterday.

Commuters rear hub felt rough. Took it apart to re-grease. Turns out the drive side cone is heavily pitted (probably from when the lbs screwed it up  ).

Cleaned, rebuilt and pretended I didn't see it.
  • Just scrubbed the road bike after yesterdays club ride.... Really shouldn't leave it 24 hours mind. She had had a token clean after rides for about the last 10 rides so I treated her to a hot soapy muc off bath and a thorough degrease of the drive chain. Despite nearing her second birthday she looks like new!
  • Today I got round to completing the Sora to 105 upgrade on one of my bikes. Had to wrap new bar tape and index the gearing. Been putting off the bar tape for a bit but, despite it being my first ever attempt, I'm very happy with how it turned out :)

So the SRAM Apex compact to Shimano 105 triple groupset upgrade is complete and the Felt is a transformed bike.

I learned a few lessons on the way:
Don't sort the cable liners out before putting the inners through, they get caught on the bends and fray the ends. This requires new cables
Don't sort the cable liners out before checking the brake levers are in the right place. This requires resorting the liners out again
Work in a tidy area 'cos when things ping off (specifically the rubber liner ends) you can't find them again
BB30 bearings are a pain to get in and out, and I think the rubber mallet and swearing approach is not the best. The cheap £5 tool is not bad though
You CAN use Hollowtech II BBs in a BB30 shell with the correct shim (works remarkably well in fact)
Don't spin the crank to check it's running smoothly after you've just fitted the front derailleur. Trapping your index finger between the teeth and the deraillleur is: a) VERY VERY painful b) watching the latex glove finger turn into a blood balloon is not pleasant
Don't use baby wipes to clean grease off the crank when you've just taken a chunk out of your finger. "No more tears" is a lie. Admittedly not many babies know the swear words I used.
Always remember to lube the last chain link BEFORE attaching the chain or you get a stuck link that you need to soak overnight to sort. Yeah, I didn't and yeah, I did.
Also remember to remove the pedals BEFORE removing the cranks, you would not believe how hard it is to do so when you don't have a work bench.

Finally: The 105 set in black really sets off the black and white Felt F65x. It's a very purdy bike now. (even with mudguards on)

Swapped the Knog Blinder from seat post to rack and Smart Lunar R2 onto the seat post now the bracket has arrived, secured both with a cable which angles the Knog down slightly.

    Fitted to the commuter:
    Dura Ace 7800 rear mech
    KMC 10sl Gold chain
    New chain ring
    Glossy White fizik bar tape

Perfect for the summer months ahead... :?
  • Fitted new SPD-SL pedals, sadly not in time for a proper ride yesterday but managed a quick blast on them. Happy with left cleat position after an adjustment mid-ride, but think the right needs a bit of fine tuning. No probs clipping out (or remembering to do so), clipping in took a bit more getting used to but got the hang of it in the end and absolutely no probs on this morning's commute. As to whether it's made much diff I'm not sure, I like to think I had a pretty smooth, efficient pedal stroke on flats so there's no obvious perceived advantage in terms of smoothness or whatever. However, no doubt the advantages will accrue over longer rides and when spinning my legs like crazy. I might also be able to sprint faster out the saddle than seated now!

Changed the brake levers on the Brompton for Avid Speed Dial 7s, change the Fibrax pads for SwissStop greens and re-cabled the lot.

    Stoppy.

Edit: and I put some reinforced rubber tubing around the suspension block and tightened a couple of jubilee clips around it to see if that hardens the ride.

11+ radiators in my house which have been unbalanced since the 7 years we've been here, i'm now really shocked how much better the ambient temperature is - what an idiot to leave it so long :x

too add a cycling theme, my Cervelo is inside against the living room wall, warm and cosy.

Felt it was time to replace the brake blocks after 1300 miles over the winter.

Did the brakes on the car, which totally buggered me for making a wheel building stand. Got some of the way though the one from Musson's book before shambling out of the garage a broken man.

Diagnosed and fixed weird slow puncture on the back. Valve had failed. Whilst I was fixing this I took the opportunity to replace the rim tape that was of limited quality on the stock tyres of the 00. Surprisingly easy to do!

Finally got a set of forks fitted to my son's road bike that work, the brakes fit and everything. Replaced a tube in the EPO's station hack, that was a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it". She asked me to pump up her back tyre the other day, whilst I was at it I topped up the front. It would seem taking the pump off I pulled the valve a bit hard and broke the tube. Then had a fiddle with a couple of spare wheels that were kicking around the garage, overhauled a front hub and checked spokes on a couple of rear wheels that need broken spokes replacing.

Pfft! Measured at the pad, my datum point has changed as the shoe is slighlty thinner than it was.......... (ie 0.00mm!)

My ongoing quest to have the filthiest bike in London took a dent, as I gave everything a clean, and re-lube, particularly the drive train. Surprised how much of a difference it made this morning.
