Local to me, well bit of a stretch.......................... about 30 miles travel for me to get to Rivi pike. From Warrington- Burtonwood originally.
Local loop that I do for an evening ride is basically, round Sankey valley park- up thro' the fields in Burtonwood, back down the Sankey St Helens canal and back down the park to home- its around 12 miles or so...... Do it a couple of times in summer at a steadyish pace or try a fast single loop.
I keep trying to hook up with a couple of lads from Newton le Willows to show me round Carrmill dam area, but its never quite come off for various reasons!0 -
Hi all, it's that day of the week again. I weighed in at 20st 8.75lbs, a weekly loss of 5lbs! I am of course very pleased, and my weekly average loss is now back up to a very healthy 2.25lbs. My eating has gone exactly to plan this week, and i have ridden my 10 mile route 4 times. For weeks I was unable to get below the 45 minute ride time, so I stopped timing it this week. Then last night I timed it again and I completed it start to finish in under 34 minutes! Am very pleased with that, and have no wish to get any faster. I have, however, come up with a slightly longer route home to try, making my total journey 11.5 miles (and heinously hilly). I haven't ridden the new route yet but plan to do it tomorrow. I will be taking it nice and easy to start with and see how i go from there. I won't get four rides in this week due to a number of reasons, but will get three. To get four i would have to ride two nights running at least once and I don't like doing that as I need a night off to recover from the previous night's ride. Well that's about it from me, time isn't on my side today at all, but I'll try to pop in again midweek. Best wishes to you all- Each new day is a gift, that\'s why it's called the present -0

Good going there Dave P!! 5lbs is a great loss! While you may have no great desire to go faster, you will. As time goes by it'll get easier and easier and you'll need/ want to spend more time on the bike (unless you run out of time again!)
B
But, 10 miles in 34 mins is actually pretty good going. A lot of 10 mile TT's, most try to get under 30 mins which will be an avg. of 20 mph- so your times none to shabby at all!0 -
17.64 mph average for a 20 stone guy is good going - fair bit of power there which will surely see yr speed improve simply as a result of weight loss. I think the recommendation for good weight loss is longer steady rides - maybe try a few longer ones matey. But great weightloss in the meantime - I'm jealous0
-
Hi all, weigh in day is upon me again. This week I lost 2.25lbs, taking me past the 40lb mark to a total loss of 40.75lbs since i started. I am obviously very happy with my progress, especially as this is all new ground to me now (and has been for a long time) - despite being on diets for as many years as i can remember, i have never lost anywhere near this much weight before, nor managed to stay focused in my goals for so long either (in the past the longest it would have lasted at most would have been a few weeks and the most i would have lost would have been a little over 1 stone). Of course, i am not dieting this time which is the biggest difference, instead i am just choosing my foods a lot more carefully, drinking lots of water and making sure i get enough sleep. Also, of course, I am cycling, and there has never been an exercise aspect in the past. Plus last, but certainly not least, I have my buddy in the USA who I bounce off when times get tough (equivalent to a 'sponsor' with the AA I would guess). I haven't been out on my bike much this week, I've ridden only the once - due to work patterns. I will be riding tonight, then plan to ride again Wednesday and Friday. I will have an enforced break after that due to an operation on my toe Monday but will get back into the saddle as soon as I can. My last ride wasn't very good for some reason, I really struggled all the way along and didn't really enjoy it at all. I have been pretty run down and stressed recently, and had a bit of a cold so maybe it was that. I am definitely hoping that tonight's will be better. I haven't ridden my extended route yet, and have put the idea off until after my operation.
Right, you lot, where have you all gone? Thanks to everyone who is still posting, but any idea where everyone else has gone? It's gone pretty quiet again.
I'll be back next week, hopefully to tell you all how good my 3 rides have been this week, and that i've lost another couple of pounds (3 stone milestone is looming now!). TTFN

That's great Dave. I have actually just brought a 'large' top and 'large' shorts instead of the usuall XL stuff. Will hopefully weigh myself later today at my mothers house as I don't own any scales here.
Lets hope we can keep all this motivation up through the dark and wet months to follow.0 -
We're not posting Dave because you've shown us all up. Is there a section for non weight-losers? Only joking mate. Keep it up - well done.0

hi dave i first started reading this thread in work im around 16 1/2 stone and i wanted to get a bike and lost a stone or 2 and use it for getting to work and basically did a search on the net for related and google turned this up
Basically i want a bike but want advice!1 as does everyone......last bike i sat on was my brothers (50 quid sorta thing from woolworths) and im paranoid now it wasnt the frame it was the wheels they didnt seem to be able to take the weight of a bigger person.
But i read obviously when u started u were 22 stone and bought a bike from halfords....ive looked at the Saracen Mantra 3 07 think its 500 quid, what i want to know is....do they support weight well bikes in general and any info anyone has on this and any general advice you may have.
cheers lads
Colin0 -
Any bike will support 16 stone. Check out Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative's £300 hybrids. Decent components and, at 25lbs, light enough for street and cycle path duties. Don't waste money on £70-£100 supermarket/Halfords bikes unless you want sickened from the minute you start. There are many, many bikes that will suit you - but we could be here all day explaining. Check this forum for advice. Get ready for a geat new hobby.0

cheers for the reply i know this is going to sound a bit stupid but how come last time i went to ride this cheap thing it basically felt like the tires were running on the rims of the wheels, is that because its a cheap thing? sorry just want some reassurance before i splash out bit paranoid lool0

I didn't want to go cheap but didn't want to go dear neither, I settled in the middle for a 2007 Mongoose Tyax Elite @ £280 and I haven't been dissapointed. I have thrown my full weight which was 22 stone to start with at it on some good trails with drop offs, logs etc etc and have had no issues whatsoever.0 -
i dont wanna go cheap on the bike at all wanna spend may 500 quid on the mantra 3. just paranoid about the wheels its only for going to work on really but the roads are bad anyway so mountain bikes probably better :P i mean i may get into the moutain side of things so the saracen range mantra 1, 2 or 3 would be okay?0

Hi Colin,
When I started in feb/march time, I was 16 1/2 stone (38 in waist)....I'm now loitering around the 14 stone mark...seems like I've been here for ages (had a minor glitch when I was working away for 5 days! )
Anyway I'm now (still) 14 stone with a 34 in waist. People that I haven't seen for a while all say I've lost "a lot" of weight, and heap the praise on me which is a great boost.
Build up the distance slowly, and keep at it...by doing a bit of excercise, you feel you owe it to yourself to eat properly.....it's worth it and you'll feel so good....It will also scare you when you look through old photographs and see what you looked like...Oh and you'll have to keep buying yourself new clothes, as my old ones are all too big now...and cos it's wintery the jumpers I bought last year are all way too baggy!
Good luck!0 -
i cant wait snook i just need some reassurance about the bike, when i last got on one simliar weight the tires felt like they where riding the rims, so im really paranoid about buying a bike , any idea why that was? or if it was because the bike was a 50 quid wollies thing?
im greatful for your reply just need some feedback before i take the plunge, mad that im not fraid about the wheels or frame just the tires taking my weight.0 -
Hawkio - I thought I'd post back quickly now rather than keep you waiting until Monday for my normal post. I understand your concerns, as I had the same ones in spades!
Without seeing you on the other bike it's hard to say what the problem was, but could it have simply been the tyre pressures?
I would say that in that respect, every mountain bike on the market would be ok for you. Even after my success I am still over 20 stone, and I can sit on my bike without the rear tyre 'flattening out' at the bottom at all.
From others posts elsewhere on this site I would say the most important thing is for you to try the bike out (this will also let you know if your problem recurs). I would recommend my bike (Carrera Kraken from Halfords - had a few problems with it at the start but Halfords have been fabulous and fixed everything), and others would recommend their own through their own experiences, but each bike is different and you need to find one which suits you best.
I'm not trying to get rid of you but there are threads on this site aimed at getting advice on which bike to get, you should consider starting a new thread over there as more people will see it - you are very isolated on this one.
I hope you find what you're looking for, and that you stay in touch with us here and let us know how you're getting on.
Dave- Each new day is a gift, that\'s why it's called the present -0 -
Saracen will be fine for your weight. Although for 500 quid you might be better off looking at other makes such as Mongoose, Giant, Trek or Specialized who all do great deals on bikes at that price. IMO the Saracens don't cut it against those manufacturers. Also the timing is good for '07 discounts now that '08 bikes are emerging.
Exactly a year ago I was in the same position (and budget) as you and managed to get a really good price on my XTC (rrp £625 purchased for £480). Also try any bikes you like before you buy.
As Dave has already said, post a 'What Bike?' thread on the other forums, you should get alot more good advice from people who know about these things
ps good progress Dave. Glad to hear you're still at it!0 -
Hi all, mixed news this morning. On the cycling side, not good. I didn't ride once all week. I am due into hospital this afternoon to have my ingrowing toe removed, and it has been really panful for a few weeks, in particular last week. I decided no ride was better than a painful ride or a ride i wouldnt enjoy, so i awarded myself a break.
On the weigh in side, I lost 1.5lbs, taking my overall weight loss to 3 stone. My average weekly loss is still over 2lbs so I am happy at my progress, especially in light of the fact I haven't ridden at all.
I am off work now for over 4 weeks, so will get no commutes in, but plan to use the good weather days to take the family out for some pleasure riding once my toe has mended enough to ride.
This board has gone quite quiet again, some come on guys let us know how you're doing - good or bad. Don't let me hog the pages! This is for all of us.
I'll be back next week.
Take care.- Each new day is a gift, that\'s why it's called the present -0 -
Hey guys, I'm hoping to lose some weight by bike riding and will be commuting to work (5miles each way) within the next week. I am 19.2 stones and only started riding about 10 days ago.
In the past week, I did two 15 mile rides, a 7 mile, and a 9 mile, but I have yet to lose any weight. I'm guessing my diet is the next thing that needs to change (was really hoping to at least lose something without changing it too much).
Anyway, just wanted to check-in and say "hi"0 -
build up those miles my fellow chubby - and measure your success more by the change in yr trousers / belt than your weight !0
-
heretohelp - I agree with nickuk, to start with your cycling muscles will be building, making it seem as though the cycling isn't helping your weightloss. If you are anything like me your muscle gain will slow down once you've 'acclimatised' to cycling and you will start to notice weight loss as you'd hope. But in the meanwhile you should notice your legs are a better shape, you will start to find muscles you have never noticed, your belts will tighten furthen than usual and all your clothes will get baggy. Your efforts will eventually result in weight loss, but there are other ways to see that it is working for you. Good luck, and keep us posted.- Each new day is a gift, that\'s why it's called the present -0

Keep it up Dave & everybody else reading this on the weight loss quest.
My own progress is at a much lower rate having lost 16 lbs in around 6 months but I'm happy with that rate of progress. I often have to look twice at the scales when I see a 'new' (lower) number appear . My broad aim is to lose another stone in about another year. Broadly speaking want to get my BMI down to 25 by the end of next year.
I've only made minor changes to my diet (more fruit, less chocolate) but have kept up my average half hour a day cycle though winter may knock a hole through keeping that average up.
The other side is that I now think I'm the fittest I've been since I left school at 18.There is no secret ingredient...0 -
Just saying hi and well done to the people who are on this forum.
Great stuff.0 -
Hi guy's. Exelent thread! I have read through most of it but cant get past page 17, say's no post's exist for this subject?
Anyway, i had a bit of an early mid life crisis thing about July last year at 29. I have been overweight for as long as i can remember due to eating complete crap and no exersize (apart from ski-ing once a year) and it really caused me problems all through secondary school with lack of confidence, no mates etc. So my MOT was about to run out, i was strugling to save up for an upcoming ski-ing trip, so i decided to put the car off the road, buy a bike and start riding everywhere. I bought a secondhand 05 Carrera Kracken off fleebay for £175 and initially just used it to ride the 2 mile round trip to work and back, and occasional ride to the shops (i am a white van man, so am able to get most bit's while out on the road) After stuggling my way through ski-ing in January i decided 2 miles a day was pathetic and, after asking for upgrade advice on the old MBUK forum, met a guy who introduced me to XC for the first time, and started doing a 10 mile loop in my local woods after work 3 or 4 days a week, which got me completely hooked! My bank account is now neerly £2000 lighter from bike upgrades, i now do over 20 mile rides at least 5 days a week after work, and the really good bit is that i have gone from 15 1/2 stone down to 12 stone 3 pounds Everyone rips the piss out of me for spending so much on the bike, but to me it is well worth it concidering how much better i now feel. I am sure Diabeties and heart desease were not too far round the corner, and i am so glad i rediscovered mountain biking when i did, as i can't bare to think how things would have turned out if i hadn't. I have tried the jim and swimming loads of times previousely but i hated it.
Keep up the good work Dave, you'll get there eventually. And if you fancy trying some cross country riding, i live in Whitstable and ride in Thornden and Blean woods, and would also like someone else to ride with occasionally, so you are welcome to join me.

It doesn't go past 17, Andy. Yet! I think the extra pages are set up in advance of more posts being added. It's a contingency plan. Anyhow, stick with it.0

Hi all, weigh in day seems to have got here very quickly this week. Bad week all round I'm afraid. My eating wasn't particularly good following a Chinese I had on Tuesday, and culminating in a sausage sarnie late last night. Very nice, mind you. I haven't cycled at all this week. Was laid up for 3 days following operation on my toe, and been quite busy around the house since then. Off work for another 3 weeks so no commuting coming up but I strive to have some pleasure rides with the wife and kids when the weather dries up. I ought to add that I weighed the same this week as last, so no damage done! In fact, I'm actually very happy as I expected to put on. I'm still ahead of my 2lb per week target which is excellent.
RichK - Well done on your weight loss. As much as I have a whole bunch of targets, milestones and goals I really don't mind how long it takes to lose my weight, the only important thing is that it comes off. Keep up your good work.
Muddyfoxquest - Hi to you too. Are you cycling to lose weight or are you a fittie who has strayed into this thread lol. Best of luck to whatever challenges you are faced with.
Andyturner28 - Unfortunately Woody is right, the last two pages are blank. It is a glitch which occurred when this site took over from the previous one and is yet to be fixed. As a new page begins, so another blank page arrives! Until it is resolved, there will always be two blank pages at the end which i imagine has turned many away who have tried to navigate straight to the last page. Anyway, that is enough whinging from me for one post, I am very impressed with your 100 miles per week cross country, you must be super fit. The positive effects to your health will have been incredible. I've found that like you said people either knock you for cycling or actually join you and feel the benefits for themselves. I soooo wish I had found cycling years ago. Whitstable is only down the road (a free train ride for me!) so I will definitely take you up on your offer of joining you for some XC riding, but not until I am fitter lol. You'd kill me. Keep us posted with your achievements and progress.
I'll be back next week. Be good to yourselves. And if you aren't, then make sure you cycle enough to cover up your naughtiness lol.
Dave- Each new day is a gift, that\'s why it's called the present -0 -
Hi Dave.
I didn't think to look at the bottom of this page. No i am not super fit just yet, recon i'v still got another 1-1/2 stone to loose yet as still got some exess insulation. I have been having no end of bike problems lately as well, so i havn't been riding as much as i would like lately. Been waiting over a week for my lbs to build me a new wheel as the old hub is knackered, and the day after i dropped it off the hub on my dad's bike (which i have been using while mine is in the shop) started playing up as well! Oh well, i'll just struggle on. Hope your foot gets better soon.

Hi Dave
Don't beat yourself up abou the odd sausage sarnie, daily they ARE bad, every now and again you just have to cycle a bit further...at least that's the way I look at it...and if I commute to work it's my reward for doing 26 miles in a day
Not been on my bike this week, had problems with it...Actually the correct version would be that: I had a problem staying on it....Decided to got for a hangover clearing ride last Friday, got rid of the hangover alright, came back bruised, battered and bleeding...My bike slid away from me on some cobbles (Thames had come in leaving a fine layer of slimy silt on the cobbles) first thing I knew was.."Wot the F.....?" "Owe!" "Shhhhhugar" as I used my rse as a brake, sliding with the grace and poise of a two legged elephant having a mud fight with a drunken giraffe. Fell right on my side/hip, never known pain like it! Nothing serious, just bruising and lots of it...spent most of today picking scabs of my elbow, which I haven't had to do since I was a kid!
Can't wait to get back on my bike...it's sore to walk at the mo.
On the good side, it means I've been able to go to the pub after work...OK not good for the weight loss, but great for the pain!!
I'll just cycle twice as far and hard from now on!
Keep it up

Lol... whenever I crash and get all beaten up, I buy a bottle of wine and drink it while resting at home!
Didn't crash hard for a while now (maybe I got better? ), so my alcohol intake was less too... :oops:http://tinyurl.com/357krj The mud hog0 -

Tell me about it! I go ski-ing every year and bought a load of stuff in Canada in January when i was still 15 1/2 stone and 38 waist to use ski-ing this year. Now that i am down to 12 stone 3 and 33in waist none if it fits any more, and all my jumpers and fleeses look rediculouse, like a kid wearing his dads clothes. And because i am spending on the bike all the time i am too scint to buy any more. I am not REALY complaining though

Same with me regarding clothes sizes. But the other way round.0
