Dave must be bust with his new Freeview channel!
Hope all is well Dave0 -
I'm going to need a new belt soon, and i only got it in September! It's size 32-34" and i went onto the last hole today I think weight is getting a bit irelevent with me know as i have been at or around 12st for a couple of months now, but the fat is still dissapearing. No dought down to my balooning thigh musscles, especially after last nights ride where i burnt 2500 calories after 24 miles
Is it dangerouse to burn 1800ckal more than you consume in one day?
Hope your still riding Dave. Don't let this crappy weather stop you.

Hi Andy
2500 cals seems a bit on the high side...how did you work it out?...the reason I ask is that I thought when riding "you" (generic "you" not you and an individual) only burn something like 8 or 9 calories a minute when working, so to burn off 2500 cals you'd have had to be working for 277 minutes or 4.5 hours meaning your average speed was 5mph?? where you cycling like fury on the granny ring??
My commute is a total of 26 miles, don't worry I'm far from being uber fit, but I try to do it at least once a week, not every day! If Iwas burning off 2500 cals every time I did that (as well as the other nmiles to make my weeky total to around 50 miles), I think I would be thinner than I am now 8)
I do know what you mean about the weight Vs belt size...I've been hovering around 14st for what seems like most of the year, but my trousers are becoming baggier and my belt has run out of holes (second belt this has happened to btw ) so I know that something is happening, but the scales aren't letting me see the results. I did stop cycling for 3 weeks with a bruided hip (from a fall) and another 3 weeks from a holiday...but still the needle on the scales is too close to 14...I want to break away from 14st once and for all!!!

Hey Snooks.
I use a Sigma PC9 heart rate monitor which has a calorie counter, so i was going by that. I was riding for about 3 hours on fairely hilly singletrack. I hope the calorie counter is accurate. It has only taken me just over 8 months to loose 4st, and i think i read somewhere that you have to burn off 3500ckal more than you consume to loose 1lb, and i have lost a lot of lb's. My average heart rate was 154 over the 3 hour peariod and mostely in the power zone.
Oh and i am celebrating again.......I'm finally under 12st
On a final note. WHERE'S DAVE!

Well at yesterdays weigh in I officially hit the 7 stone mark. Been at it since Feb and I'm still pretty overweight so I'm gonna continue with my quest to relieve my poor bike of so much strain
I'll have me a little Christmas / weight loss celebration I think and have an Indian over the holiday!
It seems like it's taken a life time to lose this last stone but to echo other members words on here my trousers are getting looser and my legs have started to look more toned so I think the riding is adding muscle even though I'm losing fat slowly.
Keep it up people, the thread is an ispiration to us all.
Cheers.0 -
well done ringside your doing great.
Out of interest how many miles a week you riding ?
also do you think longer rides are better than more frequent shorter rides.
3 hour rides compared to 1 hour rides.
I have lost 2 stone would like to lose 2 more0 -
Hi guys, thought I'd drop in to say hi on this forum thread
If you look at the WMB Blogs, you'll see that I've taken on a big old task in the name of science and mountain biking - a rather serious weight loss and training programme for WMB to get me into shape from my peak weight of 20st 8lbs
so, theres going to be posts on the WMB blog to keep people updated, and also on my personal blog - www.mountainbikediet.blogspot.com - so hopefully I'll be keeping you entertained with how its going!
Been on the diet for a month now, lost 13.5 lbs in first 28 days, target isnt set yet, but we'll be taking it right down to a "healthy" level and seeing what sort of difference it makes to my fitness, with some hard work on the way - so, any questions or comments, feel free to post away.0 -
I think Dave has thrown the towel in, shame he was doing really well.
hope he does come back.
my friends have told me if you can hack the winter you will love next summer.
I`m looking forward to it already.0 -

Me too! Despite telling myself and others i am not going to let this crappy weather stop me, i keep inventing excuses why i shouldn't go for a ride. I only went out 2 days last week, admittedly my bike was playing up, or rather i cocked up putting the chain back on wrong, forgetting there is a bit of mettal sticking out on the cage of the rear mech and threading the chain the wrong side of it so that the chain was grinding away at the lug for 30 miles! Oh well, i pick up a new 08 XT Shaddow rear mech tomorrow, so that will be an insentive to go out
It really dose look like Dave has given up. Despite this lets keep this thread going, as it has helped a lot of people over the last months, including me.

I find it easy to think up excuses...until I look down and see my belly looking back at me!
Although it's gone down a lot, I can still see it...and as long as I can, I have one reason to get my lardy rse on a bike and get rid of it! This morning I woke up late (forgot to set my alarm) it was cold outside, it was also blooming windy, and I felt a few spots of rain on the way to my bike. I could have easily got on the train....but where's the fun in that?

Thanks for that Snooks, my head dobber must have been playing up to make such a faux pas.
Yep, excuses for not riding are far too easy to find at this time of year!0 -
I don't even have a huge belly as an insentive any more, lost that already , and am now theoretically at my ideal weight. But i still have a fair bit of fat around my belly and hips which i just cant get rid of, despite loosing 2" around my waist since the begginning of September. I don't know if it is this crappy weather but i am rappidly loosing motivation to get on the bike after work at the moment. I have just spent the last 20min thinking of a reason not to go out tonight, despite there not being a cloud in the sky

Well it is dark and cold out there...might be a bit scary!
Just get up early and go for a ride, then you can sit on the smug cloud all day and look down on the non-excercisers :P0 -

Yer i thought about doing that, but then i thought about having to get up at 6am and thought no more! I can never seem to drag my arse to bed before 12-1am anyway
It is a good idea though, and the novalty of riding in the dark has well and truly worn off now. Might try it tomorrow.......Maybe

I'm sure if you want to get up, the easy way is to post your phone number on here!!!...I'm sure the are an endless supply off peeps willing to help you wake up in stupid hours in the morning
I myself have far too many Xmas parties to go to, so the Marin will be staying at home for a while (done my 26 mile commute for this week)0 -
Lets keep this thread alive.....its been an inspiration to so many.
I'm off the bike just know due to finally getting my ingrowing toenail sorted out. I can feel the lbs piling on and its not even 24hrs since the procedure!
Keep up the good work folks.0 -

Er.....................NO! Still havn't managed to get up early enough for a morning ride though :roll:0 -
The other morning I got up at 5am and cycled to work. It was freezing, I mean, really freezing. My forehead was numb (thinking of jibbing the helmet off for a beanie) and the ends of my fingers were killing me. It took me ages to get in (10 miles) cos I was cycling with one hand in my pocket to keep it warm, then swapping it over.
When I got to work I felt great. Had a shower and some porridge, absolute perfection. I'll be doing it again and again, at over a quid a litre for fuel, swapping a 16 mile drive for a 10 mile cycle is, as our american friends would say, a no brainer...
The best bit is, by the time I would have de-iced my car, I was halfway there anyway!!!!_____________________________________________

That's the spirit Cambo! You soon warm up after the ride just enough to look forward to the return journey!
When I cycle, my other half catches the bus in. Our destinations are within a few 100yrds from each other. Guess who gets to work quicker even if we leave at the same time....!?0 -

Exactly! I have saved £1170 over the last 16 months just by not driving to work, let alone all the other occasions i would have used it. It's just been sitting on the drive since last August. It really needs some attention though as it is slowly rotting away, and i miss my car. Time to get it back on the road soon i think, if only to use it to get the bike to trail centres.

Wow i just did something really silly. Was clearing out my wallet of old reciepts that have built up over the last 3 months, and stupidly decided to add them all up. Just in my lbs i have spent £471  Seariousely, never add up what you spend, it'l make you cry. That is on top of the £1980 i had already spent on the bloody thing! And i have been desperately trying to save up for a ski-ing holiday, which has to be paid for by the beggining of Jan! This s**t is seariousely addictive.........and expensive!

Great thread. I took up cycling again in May to fight off the ever increasing waistline. The weight has come down (a bit - and not as much as I'd like) but I'm a hell of a lot fitter than I was.
Im quite fortunate as at work we get an hour for lunch and have a couple of sets of showers so now luchtimes consist of a quick change into some old gear, a blast of 7-10 miles round the local cycleways and bridleways and a quick shower before time's up.
The bug must have taken hold as I get annoyed if something prevents me from getting out on the - haven't ridden today as it was someone's leaving do!
I do vary the routes and speeds I go at - normally slow to snial's pace  and also take a day or 2 off and walk instead to help with recovery.0 -
Just been through all 21 pages, last 2 pages (22 + 23) still not showing, some very inspirational posts in this topic, well done to all who have got on their bikes and done something about their weight/fitness etc 8), this is exactly the sort of thing that made me order my bike, shame Dave gas not been on to give any updates, hope you're still on that bike, Dave!
I read another long topic on a US/Canadian biking site, a very overweight man lost a hell of a lot of weight by cycling, and that from a man who was having to use a wheelchair with an oxygen bottle on it connected to an oxygen mask, and having to take heart and other medications , for more inspiration, you can read that great story here:
359 pound weight loss, 32 inches of waistline gone!0 -
I want to get back on my bike and have found a small patch of the Pennies which is flat, local industrial estate, and will also have my 3 ½ year old with me in a trailer.
Although I plan to drive to the estate I do not want to kill myself when I get there and I think I might need a heart rate monitor.0 -

I use a Sigma PC9, which i think is very good. It also has a colorie counter so you can regulate the amount of calories you consume verses the amount you burn. A cycle computer might be handy too. Again the Sigma ones are prety good.
I would start off as you suggest, but once you find that getting too easy start doing longer routes, if not it could start to get boring making you loose interest. Always push yourself to go further and harder each time as your core fitness improves. I always finish off the last 20-30 minuits of a ride sprinting as fast as i can to the point of complete exaustion, followed by a mile cool down. As long as you eat as soon as possible after getting home you won't feel knackeded the next day.
HTH,

I fell off the wagon, for quite a while and have piled weight on over winter (+1st! ) also gave up smoking
But my level of fitness while compared to lots on this forum is low, for me its still pretty good! Got my first cycle commute of 2008 in this morning- but gales forecast tomorrow so I'm not sure how much more commuting I'm going to do by bike for a while- judjing by the forecasts anyway.
Did a few rides over 25 mile during the Xmas break, and made a resolution to get 70 miles a week in..... so if its raining I'LL BE ON ME BIKE!
Going to dust off the rowing machine as well, so if I cant get out on the bike at least I can get some exercise in.0 -
I haven't posted on this thread for a few months, but it's great to see it still running and going strong after all this time.
My story is ongoing. When I was at my biggest, I was about 19 stone and hadn't exercised in about 15 years. Started off with a Saracen Mantra 1 to start with to see if I'd like the biking bug and got down to about 16.5 stone just by cycling to work and back.
Got to the stage where I wanted to do something extra. I'm quite lucky where I work - we have flexi-time and an on-site gym one floor above where I sit, so last August I joined up. Started going to the gym at lunchtime and using rowing machine to help my upper body. Well, I've got right into it and now I really look forward to my lunchtime gym sessions. The breathless, tired feeling that used to hit quite quickly, now takes an age to get and it really takes a fair upping of tempo to get to the same point.
The company I work for is part of the Cycle To Work scheme, so I decided to get a decent bike and just before Christmas, took delivery of a 2007 spec (but brand spanking new) Rockhopper Pro. It's awesome.
I still commute to work by bike. Some days it's easier than others, but with the traffic situation, it takes the same length of time to ride as to drive it. Plus it costs me nothing in fuel, except the extra towels I need to wash!!
Between Christmas and New Year, a couple of mates from work invited me around this 10 mile off-road course they know near us. It was tough and took 1hr 20 minutes. Next time it took 1hr 8, and last time 1 hr 4. I'm not the bloke they wait for anymore and the 3 hills that I got off and pushed are now taken in the saddle - albeit in lowest gear and on the granny ring, but at least I'm still on the bike. I can even overtake them on the some of hard uphill climbs.
My weight is now 15 stone and about 5 pounds. I still want to lose about another 1.5 stone to get to 14, but I feel better than I've ever done.
I've realised this is going to have to be an ongoing thing and not something I can just pick up and drop when it suits me, 'cos I know I'll just slam on the pounds again.0 -
I SINCERELY hope this thread isn't going to die, and I hope that Dave is still out there trying, because the whole thing has been an inspiration to me.
This post will be lengthy, skip unless interested lol.... My story:-
Kid/teenager - used to cycle a lot, walk a lot, but was never fit, always overweight, thanks to having no clue about what was right to eat - not trying to blame anyone else, the info was out there, I just chose not to look!
20s - well what can I say. I done nothin.! Concentrated on developing a career, while eating/drinking whatever I wanted, weight ballooned to around 25st (I'm 6'3" and "broad"). Was put on medication for high blood pressure :?
30s - my fiancée started doing weightwatchers - she's disabled and can't excercise due to chronic neuromuscular disease. She started losing weight (and me too, thanks to the knock-on effect of eating healthier) and felt I should start exercising too. I always loved cycling when I was younger, but suffered the same thing as Dave - would I break a modern MTB? My biggest concern was ridicule however...
Found this thread by accident last summer, and thought about it. Lots. In the meantime (toward the end of summer '07), I started going for walks at lunchtime at work. Managed to find a couple of routes, both around 1.2-1.5 miles, easily covered in half an hour. Also managed to find a walking partner, which always helps! Started doing the 1.5 mile walk five times a week, and noticing the difference! After doing so, I decided to start going for a walk on Saturday mornings too, for around an hour, covering 3 miles minimum.
Present day - was visiting my doctor in December due to a dose of tonsillitis, and she decided to check my cholesterol, among other things. Returning for the blood results in January, turned out my cholesterol was ok! Below the "upper average" region, when I was expecting "you'll be dead in weeks"!. Doc also worked out my "cardiac event risk" (ie will I have a heart attack) and it turned out to be 8%. Apparently anything below 10% is considered "OK". Doc also weighed me in December, despite my protests, and my weight at that point was 24st. When I went back for my cholesterol result in January, my weight had dropped by nearly a stone to just over 23st. Over Xmas! Needless to say I was happy with this, and my doc was seriously impressed to boot.
This whole thing kinda inspired me - if I'd managed to get thru my 20s being as sedentary as can be and not suffer massively for it, then maybe I should turn things round in my 30s. So after a bit of prodding, I finally bit the bullet in January, done some research, and bought a Mongoose Tyax Super '07 (bargain!). Had to take it to LBS to get built, and had a real fear of being ridiculed by the staff there (who would obviously think I was taking it on behalf of someone else) but no, the staff were perfectly cool, and even asked me if I was looking forward to getting out on it, which was encouraging
First ride, managed a very short 2 mile stutter around my locale. But that proved I could do it! Next day, went for a 6 mile ride with my sis. It knackered me, but didn't floor me as I thought it would... perhaps like Dave my fitness level was higher than I assumed, and perhaps the 7.5 miles of walking a week had helped!
Been out every weekend since then... next ride was 8 miles, followed by 10, followed by 12! The 10 and 12 mile rides were probably due to newbie enthusiasm tho, so I've kind of settled on a nice, fairly easy 8 mile local route till I build up. Hoping to build up to bigger things by summer tho!
So, to anyone who's trying to figure out whether to start cycling? Just go for it. One of my big concerns was what passers-by would think when they seen someone of my build powering around on a push bike, and my fiancée put it best when she told me that what they thought didn't matter a bit, because even if they were real hard-nosed cynics, they still wouldn't be able to deny that at least I was trying Inspired!
Back at the docs in March, and hoping to have knocked off another stone2010 Specialized Competition Secateurs, hell yeh0
