I've had to edit it down from an unwatchable 45 minutes to a more palatable 5. To be honest, for a lot of the journey it was so dark all you could see was the occasional set of headlights.

BTW, it's a bit juddery cos either my headset or my pedalling style causes the bars to jerk side-to-side.
  • Theres some graet footage here and some near misses too, I'm about to become a cycle commuter and thinking of investing in one of the ATC 2000's.......
Check out this vid for a properly mad commute through the mean streets of New York......
Makes London look positive a walk in the park .......

    Got my ATC 2000 yesterday.
Image is great, I've had it on my handlebars which was a little bumpy due to the state of the roads around here and on my helmet today which didn't work out since the angle proved to be too low and I got 30 minutes footage of the road surface.
A little adjustment and I'll get there...

Great vid. Tell you what - by comparison to London, or anywhere in the UK, the roads are WIDE and the cabs aren't capable of moving 3 feet directly sideways with no warning.

Where else do you ride? I did wonder that when I visited NY - great place, but how would I do my outdoor stuff? (note - I wonder that about London also and, hence, I don't live there).
  • Hi all
Just thought I'd ask how you reduce 50 mins of total 'footage' down to a size that is bareable for others to watch

    Thanks

Am on the verge of clickin Buy It Now on an ATC2000/2K but want to see some proper real ACT2K footage, not the Youtube compressed stuff.

Can somebody upload a 30 second clip to Rapidshare.com and post the link to me via PM/Email. Want something straight from the camera.

    TIA
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Sure, I'm just uploading a clip here:

    http://www.londonskaters.com/training/2 ... hpc-02.AVI

About 42MB, you get to see Lee in his Quest velomobile overtaking me at Hillingdon. Quality isn't great to be honest, and it's probably made slightly worse by me having mounted the camera on my handlebars.

p.s. give it until 16.20 or so before trying, it's still uploading atm.

Cheers Mike, quality quite better than I'd imagined. Guess I've got used to the quality from my phone.

ATCs on eBay with a Buy Now price always look over priced to me. Watch the ones from USA as you are likely to get a big customs bill as well. Decathlon do a rebadged version for £69. Exactly the same as the ATC2000 with all the same accessories (that is where I got mine). Plenty of web sites with ATC2000s for under £80.

Just made the purchase of an ATC2K + 2Gb card for under £87 on ebay from 2 seperate sellers from UK, well the camera is. Can't see me being stung on the card if it does come from overseas.

It looks like there's an ATC-3000 on the way. I've seen mention of it due for release back on the 15th (May) but Firebox are taking pre-orders (£99) with it due in on June 10th.

Don't seem to be able to find much about it though - other than that it has 'improved audio' and a 45 degree field of vision (not sure how much of an improvement either actually is) and that it now takes a 4GB card.

I can't even see it mentioned on Oregon Scientific's own site though so it's a bit of a mystery.

Anybody know anything about this one?

It looks like there's an ATC-3000 on the way.

Firebox are claiming it's in stock, now - can't find much other info about it, though. It's still 640x480 @ 30fps with a VGA CMOS sensor, but has a wider angle of view (although the specs don't say how much wider).

Wiggle don't stock it, and Firebox are claiming its as a 'UK exclusive', so I guess this means we won't be finding it anywhere else.

I'm wondering if this might see the ATC 2000 reduced as end of line...

I'm a weak, weak man when faced with a 'pre-order now' button... mine arrived today

Supposedly they've fixed the issues with the audio (though I've just walked about the house with it on for a few minutes and I'm not quite convinced). As you say, a wider (48 degree) field of view. Can take 4GB SD cards rather than 2GB for the ACT2K and is water resistant up to 3m so it can be used whilst swimming (don't know if that's new).

There's still a slightly wabbly (almost liquid) look to the video but, then, it's the same sensor.

The box advertises a site (http://www.atc3k.com) for info, firmware, etc. but (worryingly) that site doesn't seem to have been created yet (the domain is registered to godaddy.com).

Really I was looking for a cheap (relatively) cam to start out with and - what with it being wireless and under £100 - the 2k caught my eye. Glad I spotted the 3k on Firebox because even though it doesn't seem to have too much more to offer than the 2k, it's still £100.

I'm not going to be able to get out on the bike tomorrow so it'll be getting its first run on Saturday morning. Fingers crossed.

    ---
edit: according to their website this is a new CMOS sensor... we shall see...

A car made contact with me tonight as I rode home. Got a feeling he doesn't realise you need to give cyclists space on the roads, luckily the cam was on the bike and running

1:03 Forced to deviate from chosen line because he’s in the wrong lane trying to overtake me.
1:08 Look behind/beside me and realise how little space I’ve been given. Lift right hand from bars as a cautionary measure.
1:09 His mirror hits my handlebars and forces handlebars to the left, contact can be heard on video. He knows he’s hit me as he slows down but sees I’m OK and drives off.

Still got the uncut footage, is it worth showing the boys in blue?

Okey doke. Went out this morning with the ATC3K.

Nothing exciting happened, just a nice ride. Posted a quick video up on YouTube with my first impressions:

Sound could be better - at any kind of speed all you get is wind and at lower speeds it's all a bit muffled.

Quality of the video is good. Slight problem when changing the light conditions but nothing major.

All in all, I'm very happy.

Anyway - this is my first video put together using my Mac so it's not got any bells and whisles. Also, I seem to have managed to shrink it in the wash.

I'd say that you'd be within your rights to report the guy to the police - especially given that he failed to stop at the scene of an accident - but...

To be fair, if he forced you off your intended route at 1:03 I presume you wanted to go right? If so then you were in the wrong lane (the arrow painted in the lane you were in pointed straight on) and he may have assumed he could get by you... though he'd have been pushing it given there is a bollard there.

After that, maybe nearly wiping you out once just got him flustered and he made a bad decision thinking he could get around you where the road narrowed.

Not that I'm saying he was right - clearly he was impatient and didn't give you enough room.

The line I was taking was to go straight on, if I wanted t go right I would have taken a short cut and used the ped crossing at the first set of lights. Will put the footage on a VCD for the boys in blue to view tomorrow. If he only gets a producer, it will make him think next time.

Couldnt this have all been easily avoided by staying behind him at the lights? It didnt look busy there didnt seem to be a reason to pass the 1 car stopped at the lights. He could have gotten on his way and you'd have been a car length behind where you ended up but with a clear road in front of you.

For gods sake ... why are you ... a cyclist ? defending a crap motorist

There's a reason why there are cycle boxes at the front of traffic lights and thats to give bikers a clean start away from any vehicle behind.

The tosser in the car did not give due care and attention ... it's a simple as that.

There have been several comments posted on the video. One says cool car, obviously another who got his licence and sense from his cornflake box in the morning, the rest have been against the driver calling hime something to do with pancakes and a misspelt twit

Sorry if I came across that way, I was not defending the motorist in any way.

I'm very passive, especially when its me vs someone bigger and the whole thing just seems fairly avoidable, avoiding the danger is a lot better than getting hurt, even if you were in the right in this situation that doesnt often help when you come into contact with a car. Filtering past 1 or 2 cars at a junction doesnt gain anything and just puts you at risk for little/no benifit when the roads are quiet, if there were lots of cars about eg. rush hour I would have agreed with filtering past the queue, just in this instance I do not.

You mean ... when they come into contact with his bike .... , taking the frontal position ( as is recommended and encouraged through the green cycle box ) means you are not at risk from further vehicles that arrive in the queue behind you.

There are too many bikers that feel they don't have an equal right to the road and they believe all incidents are their fault ... that attitude needs to stop.

Had a cracking ride in the rain this morning. Had my high-vis jacket on and my rear lights were flashing away... still seems I was all but invisible though

sorry to see those close calls. Had a few myself in the rain. You'd think their car was about to melt and they HAD to get home to avoid it.

I've tried to record a few vids myself. I used a manfrotto 035 super clamp and a 352 ball and socket head on the 037 adapter. I screwed a nikon L10 digicam onto that. Sadly the nikon isnt that up to it, certain pothole and bumps will switch it off and the batteries get eaten in 20 minutes.

I did get 30 seconds the other day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9PwKNVX9Ug
