How are you getting on with that? I've finally managed to get space in the garage for a workshop.

Wrecked my cheap lifeline pedal wrench so went ahead and bought a Park Tool PW4 Pedal wrench. It cost £20 so it better be good :)
Also bought two Michelin lightweight butyl tubes (around £4.50 each from Ribble too)
And a Token chain keeper in blue for my Jamis (£8 from Wiggle)
And some For Goodness Shakes vanilla powder for work (£18), for when I do longer rides to work.

If it's anything like the Park one I have, it's reassuringly industrial.

Actually, while we're on the subject (kinda), does anyone want a big mechanics vice?

    Bit like this REC-6-RECORD.jpg

Except I think the photo is of a No. 4 whereas I've got a Record No. 6 (6" / 150mm wide jaws) to be getting rid of... To be honest it's probably a bit big for bike work.

Reason I'm asking here is because it weighs something like 30 kilos and the prospect of shipping that much metal via eBay things doesn't really appeal...

That exactly what I want, I could have spent £10-£15 and bought something that probably would have lasted me 10 years, like the one I had, but I think this one would probably last me a lifetime.

Park Tools rear hanger alignment tool (DAG 2.2)
FSA Energy Wing Pro compact bars with grey decals (42cm ctc) - to replace the stock bars on my Solace. Prefer this size, the slight flare to the drops and the flat top.
Both from CRC, and with BC discount just over £100..

Oh, and a sleeveless "performance" base layer from Aldi for 7 quid. I have two of their compression long sleeve variants which work really well as a winter base layer. This also looks incredibly good for the money. Size small gives a good compression fit on my 38" frame

Blasted Halfords 20% off sale, and hopefully another 10% BC and 10% through prepaid gift card...

They had no cassettes or studded winter tyres which I wanted though, which annoyed me.

Yep the Halfords sale was too good and couldn't resist. 20% off, plus 15% off via cycling vouchers through my work plus 7% cashback via Quidco. Basically I have paid £71 for all of this

    Continental GP 4000S II in 700x23 x 2
    KMC X10-73 x 1
    Shimano PD-A530 SPD Pedals

    An absolute bargain!

    Pedals.
Arse, I knew I needed something else. M424s...
15% via vouchers is cracking, max I normally get is 7, so was happy to get 10.

Yep, I am on IBM Rewards and they are coincidentally having a 15% off Halfords vouchers this week. I don't have BC so your saving is pretty similar to mine.

Part of the reason I held back on Conti tyres last night from Halfords flash sale was because I was deliberating my first dedicated GPS cycle gizmo, which after traditional agonising for ~24 hours, has been made...

Finally got round to checking out Lidl's bike gear, although while starting to write this, I've just realised I forgot to look for the bibs and jersey!

Oh well, five £4 tubes of three flavours of electrolyte tabs, plus two pairs (redundancy planning) of the tri-lens glasses after my 10-year old Aldi pair died at the weekend.

Plus two 2l bottles of diet cola for 17p each... 17p!!!1! :P

27mm Vittoria Open Paves in all black, which I've just levered onto my tubeless-ready rims with no small degree of difficulty. The outgoing tyres were more cut than rubber.

Miniature Ortlieb saddlebag with ICS clip to replace the fizik one whose zip had bust. No zip on the Ortlieb, so hopefully greater longevity.

Just came on here to say thanks. It's not the most exciting item in the world but the Camelbak Podium is Just Better (tm).

Yeah, Acycles. I got Snow studs(same weight, less studs) for this price last year and they were "just" adequate, but the marathon winters were £35 each, and i wasn't sure i would ride every day even if it was icy. Turns out i did, but still came off 3 times on sheet ice as I couldn't stay in a straight line with them fitted on the ice and ended up in "tank slapper" situations.
I did 900 miles on them - they hurt, but i got to work in one piece when the temp was subzero in the shade for days at a time through fords and flooded rivers that i wouldn't have even tried without them.
So for £30, less than the price of a taxi to work and back ( no viable other PT route) it's worth it.

I already own the 700x35c for my main commuter. These got me to work fine for the past two winters, they've heavy but not uncomfortably so, you just go a bit slower.

pro tip: keep a track pump at work. I ran low pressure on the way in, on the way home the ice was usually gone so I always pump again before I leave.

& thanks to whoever spotted this as I just ordered 26x2" for the MTB. Two reasons - I only have one set of wheels and I can't always to a*sed to swap tyres over in the morning, so now the MTB becomes the ice bike.

And I do feel a bit sketchy on ice on the CX bike, I think it's the body position or being higher up, or just that 35c isn't that wide, who knows but I'm happier knowing I'm on the MTB this year!

Glad to be of assistance ;). That was my setup last year with the inferior "Snow studs" , and will be this year with these.

    A chain lock.

Bought a u-lock to leave at work yesterday in anticipation of my first ride to this office. Turns out the racks don't include anything that allows you to attach the frame to the rack with a u-lock.

As I mentioned recently I bought a Camelbak Podium and was impressed, I then found they do a 4 wall insulation bottle version.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/camelbak-podium ... er-bottle/

One of the reviews mentioned he stuck some ice in and 2 hours later there was a couple cubes left, not sure how truthful it is, but if my drink stays colder for longer than half hour I will be happy.

Cos I am doing the Marmotte see. And cos I needed to swap to a compact, and get lighter wheels. And it's cheaper to sell the Supersix and get a brand new bike than doing that.

  • Pre-ordered a 2018 Diamondback Heist 3.0 to try out these new fangled standards like 1*11, 27.5+ boost hubs, stealth dropper etc. Selected on the basis that I'm pretty sure a hire bike I rode near Aviemore was a DIamondback Heist and it was good.

Wife was not thrilled about it, especially when I pointed out that it was her fault for stealing my Cotic Soul for her own use.
