I am rendered almost speechless. Chapeau.
Have you got a delivery date?
Now the important question. What pedals? ;)

Actually, I haven't decided that yet.

I was all set on speedplays, but bike shop guy didn't think much of them. I think when I go up and get it I might try a few of the ones they have as demos and see.

EDIT: delivery date is 'in about 5 weeks'...
Argh, a frustratingly long time. Still, gives you a chance to get some fitness back and the weather should be better :D

Testing pedals is a tricky one. Initial impressions may be a little misleading. The entry into/exit from brand new pedals is usually harder but they tend to loosen up after a few rides*. The bearings also free up a bit after a few miles.

    * I also find the first unclip on my weekend bikes (time pedals) a bit disconcerting after a week on the commuter (sloppy spd peds)

  • Nice. Little bit - ahem - tarty - for my urbane and refined tastes, obviously, but each to their own.

Beware clif bars. They're nice, but they're like elvish bread. Bad idea to eat a whole one in one go. Even hobbits frown at that idea. :D

Next Morpeth Social Club - remind me to bring the Speedplays.

    And what wheels?
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

Why'd they put the wheels on upside down? :D:D:D

Yes, I did think that you in particular would be offended by its tartiness. God only knows what Jashburnham will think. ;)

Thanks - I will remind you! And as for wheels, again that's still a bit up in the air. Advice from BSG (bike shop guy) was to go for something hardwearing like the Mavic Ksyrium, so I agreed! But it's all subject to change, and I do also have a set of Rolf Primas coming my way. We shall see!

And what is elvish bread? Another geeky sci-fi reference that I'm way too cool for?

Before you finally agree to the Mavics, ask them if they will be ok to re-true? I had some and my LBS said, I think, that he couldn't re-true them A1 because the alu nipple seized with the alu rim. I really did like the wheels, and they served me well, but just check this before you commit yourself. The advantage of hand-builts, which Epic I'm sure can do for you on, for example, Mavic rims, is that you can use spokes and hubs of your choose and which you will have no trouble replacing. This is not always the case with factory builds. It won't be a complicated discussion.

Are the Rolfs set up for Campag or Shimano?

Lord of the Rings. Lembas bread. Frodo and Samwise Gamgee ate on their journey to Mordor. Eat bits at a time.

much happier with new levers compared to the older ones much easier to ride on the hoods and can brake from hoods or top which is handy as the hills get steeper.

Got myself a Mavic 238 rim to lace my on one hub into, the rim isn't new just been gathering dust/rustin the shed as part of a wheel buod that I didn't finish and took the 7sp freehub off.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Not something I've bought, as such, but thanks to a kind colleague who responded to a bulletin board message, my wife now has a bike which only needs a bit of TLC to get it running. Hardly ridden, and free to boot. As a side effect of this, I have two bikes to work on :D and an excuse to buy more tools/shiny things :D

Today I've bought some Kool Stop Salmon all-in-one V-Brake blocks, since nowhere seems to have just the refill pads in stock.

And an update on the ultrasonic cleaner - it's good but I've decided to go for the next model up because I can't completely fit my cassette into the current one so I ended up having to do half and then turn it around to do the other half. Plus most of the bits required a couple of cycles in the cleaner and a little bit of turning (the ultrasonic transducer is at the bottom of the tank and cleaning definitely seems to be better on the side of objects facing the bottom of the tank).

The model up has a bigger tank and more power (170W instead of 70W), plus a built-in heater so I should be able to put larger batches in at once and just leave them going for a few cycles.
  • Just got a Tacx Flow turbo trainer.

Spent Sunday afternoon building the thing up, the manual is AWFUL!!!

Found a pic of the '09 scheme....

    maxima.jpg

Oh dear God that is a thing of beauty! So you went for the Maxima then? The 09 scheme is lovely lovely lovely. You cannot put Mavics on it though, not for technical reasons but simply because Mavics won't match. No no, FWDD's or Fulcrums or Bora's please.

This isn't what I have just bought, but it's intrigued and titillated me and I find the titanium/carbon mix rather seductive... Any thoughts on the Passoni Mito?

They make lovely bikes but that's a tad well, grey isn't it?

It is, but I think the Ti/C contrast works very well without screaming bling.

Yep, I sure did. I think the mavics will look pretty good, they're black and black... but I'm not 100% committed to them.

I like it - the colour scheme isn't as "Disney" as many bikes.
  • Not as nice as this though:

Although it does need carbon cranks and almost any other wheels.

Picked these up on the way home last night - all this rain and snow killed my last set. Bike stops much better now.

ps. Moots is sweet - with the metal cranks and all - carbon is overrated (visually in any case).
  • True, but I always thought those particular cranks were monstorous.
