Plan B for Pedal to Paris, should the Viner not return from its trip to Tuscany (still not on the way, as it happens) before Italy goes on holiday for August. n+1 if I can help it, of course :D ("Dear Viner, please don't fix my bike just yet!").

    Bought some new jockey wheels:

    BDP12.jpg

Anyone know if fancy jockey wheels make even a tiny difference? I thought I'd give them a try, they aren't massively expensive but I have been experiencing some drive-train friction lately and the lower jockey wheel has worn to the point where it's knocking against the chain links.

Ceramic bearings, don't you know. **Adjusts large, jangley earrings. **

Red ones go faster, that much is true.

    Damnit. I got black ones.

Haha I tried but I don't know how they're secured on and I didn't want to force them! On the plus side I was dead safe on the way home last night. In the sunshine.

Anodised metal has no place on a bike (unless anodised black or maybe silver)!

I recently bought the bbb jockey wheels - can't say I notice a difference (wouldn't expect to) but at least they are spinning on the bearings rather than on the jockey wheel plastic itself like the crappy Shimano ones the bike came with (and which weren't much cheaper than the BBB ones anyway).

    Weeeelllll..........

A guy at our track league has a prototype/one-off USE chain ring - anodized red - looks gorgeous with his anodized black Principia track frame - I guess I just don't like orange so much!

Metal jockey wheels are universally rubbish. They are noisy and wear your chain too quickly. Nice plastic or cf ones with decent bearings are the way forward, although the top one needs float to assist in gear shifts.

Just in case you wanted to put them back on again later?
  • Well, I've just been into the bike-shed and fitted the new jockey wheels and I can categorically say that jockey wheels with sealed-bearings are superb. I say that merely as the ones that came off the bike were absolutely rank. Full of oil, sand and winter gunk I'm sure that when they were new and clean they span much like the new ones, but by god they didn't any more!

I'm not sure that I'd pay the extra for the ceramic bearing ones again though, the basic level BBB Rollerboys would probably be just as good for me and a whack cheaper too. Why can I never be clear-sighted before a purchase?

Does the plastic (looks like it may be white) attachment to the spoke not have a slot in it for a screwdriver/dinner knife?

If you want reflectors, then surely you want pale blue (do they do them?) or white reflectors on that, unless you are going for some kind of 'discord' look?

    ... or blue spokelits!

tommy i have northwave winter boots, and specialized sworks summer shoes. the sworks are substantially more comfortable. I had a more basic pair of specialized before and they too were more comfortable/stiffer than my winter boots.

Cheers - Thanks Paddy - I've got the winter boots too - they're not UN-comfortable, just seen so much about the BG fit stuff, and wondered if it's worth it. They're in the same price bracket as my good Northwaves for summer are.

I applied for my free zipvit goodies box, all very nice looking

a couple of energy drinks & bar, recovery drink & bar plus a pack of fish oil capsules and multi vitamins oh and a free water bottle aka bidon.

    All good I think...
Last week I tried the choc flavour recovery drink OMFG I can only liken it to the smell of a babies nappy mixed with water, then there was the taste, sweet jeeeeez who thought that tastes like choc??? even carob tastes better than that, anyway today I tried the energy power which as far as I can tell was just 35g of salt.

Top tip if your going for a ride with a new energy drink try it first, yuk!

Oh and a thumbs up for the previously mentioned bolle safety glasses, very impressed with the adjustable arms and the anti fog that really works.

Oooh - where did you order them from, ITB? Somewhere kosher? I want some too - which did you get?

Re the reflectors - I don't want to break them as I may well use them next winter - commuting through London in the dark and wet I seriously want every advantage I can get in the whole not dying stakes!

I think there is a 5p sized groove on the white centre piece that you can twist/unscrew?

Don't use spoke reflectors, use reflective sidewalled tyres - look at Schwalbe, Vittoria or Continental GP4000 in 25C like I use...

May be able to find them cheaper, but PBK have them.

    Here you go
    http://www.safetysupplies.co.uk/trolleyed/3/index.htm

I'm just about to order some of the thinner ones, although they dont have the arm adjustment, still they're so cheap why the hell not, saved me today from dozens of potential fly/eye situations.
