He was right.
True "industrially sposored research" is research born in a university or pure research environment that becomes interesting enough to industry for them to sponsor it. An R&D problem which a company attempts to crowbar into a univeristy is not the same thing. Rightly this has a bad name.
Unfortunately there are academics who steadfastly refuse to appreciate the distinction and prefer to feed at the ample, but shrinking, government trough because it is still easier, simpler and requires less imagination.
Such academics will eventually find themselves on the Golgaphrinchian B-Arc and eventually use the leaf as currency.
Sorry for going off topic. Just something I'm quite passionate about.
I'm not missing the point, that's exactly what i'm doing, it's some interesting research that industry has taken interest in, but because i'm industrially sponsored I don't have the option to go off on a 6 month tangent because it looks interesting. I dislike the loss of this random exploration, basically i'd rather be a little earlier down the chain.0 -

I don't think this is unreasonable. I don't think disuading academics from being funded to do A and then playing in the sandpit with the money is unreasonable. Mark my words - even the research councils are tightening up on academics actually doing what they said they'd do.
The "I want to play in the sandpit" attitude of British academia as a whole (vast sweeping statement) is why academic research in the US is so far ahead.0 -
Woah nelly, wtf is this doing in the purchasing thread...

I have these there's super visible and these are half what I paid
Just took delivery of 3, less than £15 for the lot delivered - can't argue with that.
Not had time to fit them yet, but I think a disc of light is bound to help with overall visibility, especially from the side.
P.S - Think I saw a cyclist yesterday with one of these on
And it looked mighty impressive, nice pool of light on front of him, and it did not blind me in the slightest bit, as a car driver at the time.
Almost looked like it 'might' be brighter than my Ayup's :?
I am trying to find a reason to buy one.

Endura Neoprene overshoes, after dhb ones wore out at the front after 3 weeks. Was really my fault for walking about with them on a lot, as they lived on my shoes.

Hi Gabriel,
that's very good to know!
Can I ask, for commuting, how easy is it to remove and put the light back on?
My Ayup's are simplicity, as there is always a bracket on the bike, and they just sit in, and then you pull the rubber strap over to secure.
How do these work, as I don't believe there is a bracket at all?
I see you have only just got them  so can't possibly know all these answers, but will look forward to seeing how you get on with it, especially hwo the low/high settings compare.

Yes. I have winter boots, but they are quite heavy. Not cold enough for them yet. I wanted to try overshoes as it gives you an option as I only have winter boots and summer shoes. So when boots get wet, can now don the overshoes with the summer shoes.

Altura Night Vision gloves, the bright yellow reflective ones, water proof outer and thin pair of gloves inside.

Had a few rides with the new Hope Vision 1 my girlfriend bought me the other day. The thing's great! Other cyclists move over out of my way when they see the light coming because they think it's a car behind them. I've got it helmet mounted which is pretty good, not too heavy. Only problem is there's no quick release to take the light off when needed.Bianchi Via Nirone Veloce/Centaur 20100

Vision 1s rock. The QR thing is indeed a bugger, though, and the handlebar mount is a pain with skinnier bars, keeps working loose on two out of three of my bikes. But small niggles, it's a terrific bit of kit.Dahon Speed Pro TT; Trek Portland

Hey Dan,
I haven’t been out with them yet as I have got family over from Spain but I will give you my first impressions.
It doesn’t have a bracket. Instead it relays on a plastic elastic band (quite hard material in fact and appears resistant too) that loops around the bars, I have installed it and looks very secure, more secure than any other bracket I had. It is easy to remove too but probably not as convenient as a bracket (not far off though).
The battery pack comes with a plastic wrapping around it and then with a fabric enclosure, it seems well protected to me against water but this could be improved easily even by a monkey like me The pack wraps around the bars with a Velcro fastening and there are also some loops that you can use for another Velcro fastening of yours or even some cable ties.
I tried it in the dark and it was amazing though, much brighter than my Fenix L2D (probably as powerful as your AyUps) – very nice spread and not too much a hot spot.
Next week I should have time to take some pics.
