Richmond Council have switched to their Summer gritting regime. Nearly had an off in the park; saw another guy wipe out on the roundabout at Roehampton (no damage, luckily).

Embankment was lovely in the sun though :-)

Had a bit of a shock this morning. Rolled out of the drive into the glorious sunshine only to glance down and see ICE all over the road. Very gingerly pootled to the main road which was fine, thank goodness. Traffic was very much in WTF territory this morning - added 15 minutes to my journey. Of course no obvious reason for the hold up.

Had a low speed "off" in RP this morning - a very thin, very invisible layer of ice on the stretch between Robin Hood and Roehampton Gates. It had already caught out a couple of cyclists though - one had a nasty gash on his forehead, and two others had slipped. Hope they're all right.

On another note, why do some people insist on drafting you or otherwise riding way too close to your rear wheel, especially when you're already waved them to pass? :? Happened to me this morning with a chap who's got a long list of previous as a drafting fairy.

Fun commute this morning! First off the ride up South Norwood Hill was certainly more of a challenge then normal, suspect due to the 50+ miles I put in yesterday!
Then had a bit of a brown pants moment as I descending towards Dulwich when the Merc ahead had to stop for an oncoming car that was indicating to turn right, locked up and ended up skidding sideways towards the back of their car before getting a foot down (not fun in SPD's!) Thankfully I didn't hit them and remained upright :-)

Not much SCR action asides from a chap on a Mercian tourer, possibly a relative of ITB as he had a track pump strapped to his rack ;-)

Waterloo Bridge was a total mess due to roadworks but I had a fun blast up Kingsway to make up for it!

The stretch between Kingston and Ham Gates is no better - I nearly went there, too.

What a rush... Turned on to HSK and was like yesss - been off for a week for various reasons but been going to gym so legs are a-okay. Road was dry and sunning was a-shining. Spinning it up and meet a mixed bag of riders and had a good time just beetling all the way to royal albert at 22-23 passing everything which was just lovely. Had a few upstarts at the arch though hyde park corner arch and then put the power down constitution hill's velvety goodness to the tune of 27.4 - which was nice - think I had a roadie drafter along there.
Pot holes ahoy all the way from then on in and some dodgy riding from some. Over taken by no-one all the way from house to work - come on you guys, stop hiding :D

Other than that - fucking awesome to be riding today.

Oh and I had rock hard tyres with the track pump before leaving too.

    Can't wait for hometime!

A case of,"If I wanted you that close to my arse, I'd have kissed you first!" The worst thing is when you brake for something, and then can here them scrabbling around trying to stop behind you.

  • Quick note to the WVM at the Corsham school roundabout. Yes I was the one with right of way wearing the hi-vis vest on, the silver helmet and the 2 x 900 lumen lights on full that you "didn't see" as you nearly took me out as you ignored the traffic approaching from your right ....

Lordy it was a close one ...

Took me an extra 45 mins this morning Inc. Two off's which I caught both times with a speedway style foot dab, TF for worn spd's and mtb shoes.

That was very Unpleasant to say the least, sheet ice in march I ask you whatever next? Anywho as I'd missed my normal train I thought I'd push on ;)

which added an extra 5 miles and 2 masshoof hills, which has got me thinking what if I cycle less days of the week but travel further??? The next station is 11 miles, so not a great leap, mmmmm!

The Wiltshire lunatic fringe was out in force this morning. I swear the only reason one car didn't hit me as it passed was because the left side wing mirror was already folded in .
Still to make it better I did pass him and the lorry he was behind when they got stuck in a traffic queue and never saw them again. :)

Having seen the puddles last week between Robin Hood and Roehampton, I've started going clockwise from Kingston instead of anticlockwise. It was icy in the shade this morning, but nothing too bad.

as for drafting, the was a woman who I used to see regularly drafting on NKR in an evening; she had a go at me a few times for not checking my shoulder to see if she was there. I did check, I just didn't expect anyone to be stupid enough to get that close.

Wtinessed a gnat's hair of a left hook miss this morning - yellow van didn't check his mirrors, put the indicator on a nano-second before the junction and forced a roadie to swerve around the front bumper. The roadie didn't seem at all phased, and the RLJ'd - I'd have needed a drop from the hip-flask after that...

The locals here have stopped nailing corn dollies and road kill to the front door which I'm taking as a sign they're accepting us. And of course we never go out without our prosthetic third thumb.

Red Spesh Allez? I hope you gave her "what for" back! There's a difference between checking for traffic coming up behind you and checking for lazy* sods sitting right on your wheel. It's not a club run, it's the commute.

I understand where you're coming from.
But. Sometimes I draft for a few minutes because I think I can keep the tempo. Generally turns out I can't and I just give up.

On specific training runs away from city traffic when everyone accepts that you'll b riding as a group, then yes. But not on the commute, especally somewhere like the NKR when you may need to take evasive action because a driver sticks their front end out. :)

I should add that I'm sensitive about drafting because I've had someone hit my rear mech and other riders swerve around me when I've had to brake, and one person ride over my bike when I've had an off because they've been too close.

Drafting fairies is one thing, but when cars, vans and particularly buses (I know you've got air brakes, but seriously, your passengers won't thank you if you do an emergency stop and throw them all through the windscreen) tailgate you it becomes another level of dangerous.

I've had a few close shaves when stopping at RLs too, a couple of gent;e nudges that culd have been more, and one bus stopped about 12" from my rear wheel. I am considering getting one of those dot matrix displays and strapping it to my bag with the constantly scrolling message,"if you can read this, BACK TF OFF!".

Sorry, should have put this under Your Rants Here.
