Great ride in this morning, only slightly mared by a twunt in a BT Openreach van along by Clapham Common that nearly took out a motorcyclist and a few cyclist when we sped across the road. The motorcyclist tried to explain to him that he should watch what he's doing and the chap in the van stopped and started yelling at him!
I then watched as he carried on down the road ahead in the RH lane before indicating left, pulling in front of a car and nipping up a left hand turn off the common - complete tool and I got the numberplate so I'm thinking of dropping a mail about it (might even use my works account and see if they spot it's from a BT group company!)
Found a couple of nice roadies to play with but had to let them go as they RLJ and then squeezed between a bus and the metal fencing near Balham tube, a truly stupid idea as it was barely wide enough for their bars! Found a quick chap on a white SS (I think) on South Lambeth Road and I was so intent on chasing him I went straight through the red round the corner from Stockwell tube :-( A quick route change decision on the norf side of VB meant I got another go at him as we headed past the Morpeth towards Parlit Sq. THen had some awesome fun down Whitehall as the gent on the white bike (who to be fair was no slouch), a couple of roadies and me broke all SCR rules a where clearly racing! I saw a gap and punched through and held the lead until a red ruined the fun, I stopped and did my best to control my breathing but I honestly think it would have been easier to carry on sprinting as my lungs felt like they wanted to explode!
So nice to be back on a decent commute and I get to do it all again tomorrow and Friday!!!0 -
JonGinge wrote:Heading west was rather enjoyable this evening. Until, that is, I hit a pothole at about 25mph. I'm pretty sure said hole was not there last Thursday. Anyway, the result was a pinch flat and a bit of swearing. Thanks to the riders (chap in SiS kit, who I've seen in RP, and a chap on a Trek) who asked if I was OK.
Welcome to the Winter 2010 Pinchflat Club
EDIT: TBH I think some new species of tarmac dwelling mole has evolved. I spotted a 12" hole that has opened up in 24 hrs on my quiet little side road  . Also a bit frustrated that I've missed out on a dry commute this morning as the bike is still at the LBS.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Black and RED, black/blue Giant, if year as mine, would be the SCR 2.0.
Those antics sound even a bit OTT for me tho!0 -
I ride a blue and black giant roadie too but don’t think it was me , I’m normally pretty switched on around HGVs and don’t ride the embankment - I spent most of commute tending to my front wheel after a visit from the bloody PF – took me ages to change the wheel as I was faffing around too much, then when inflating the new tube I snapped the presta valve. So had to finish my ride in on a tyre that was more like a sponge. Not a good morning so far! You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quin.0

Doubt it was anyone on here, but you never know!
Also to add there was a very very quick SSer on the Embankment this morning - astounding pace after Vauxhall Bridge. Was a red bike, chap was wearing red/white peaked cap, full on messenger tart look but had the pace to back it up. The Reverse Millbank Wind Tunnel was on full fan number 5 effect today yet this guy must have been doing late 20s. Chappeau.0 -

I've had that happen before, worse bit was it was the day I manage to puncture BOTH tyres and I only carry 2 spare tubes! Thankfully one was caused by some stones working through a previously picked up huge gash in the rear tyre so I could easily patch that one.
Seeing your location tho reminded me of something that brightened my morning ride, heading down past Tooting Common towards Balham it was flooded on the right hand side and had ducks paddling around in the newly formed pond :-D0 -
Normally I don't get to SCR but today was different. A guy on an (Ti, I think) Independent in Castelli Primos ghosted past in the traffic on Cheyne walk. I must admit I drafted for a bit just to lech at the bike. If that's the commuter then what is the good bike like? I put in a turn at the front and kept a decent pace until I had a full systems failure rounding the DSC. Much to my surprise he wasn't on my wheel, though, and I could ease up to the lights.
Oh, there was another chap on a Giant TCR who had pretty good acceleration away from the lights but didn't quite have it at cruising speed. Hit quite a few RLs today...
That was hurtier than normal0 -

Thought this may have been me for a sec, but my bike is black - with red tires and tape. Only I was giving it some serious beans after VB this am - to the extent that I felt a little ill afterwards. Jeez, wasn't it just?!
Hard work this morning. Laptop and work in my backpack. There was a chap in a yellow and black top behind me on a couple of occasions long Embankment. I was feeling weak along the stretch to CB and thought he'd coming cruising past.

I read that as "red tyres and cape". Must have CX on the brain.
As for SCR, I got caught by a couple of roadies last week. They passed me, but I caught them through town. Out the other side, they dropped me on the cycle path. They weren't commuters though, so it doesn't really count.
Anyway, I weighed my commuting "rig" last night. Bike + pannier & clothes came to 43lb. That's more than double the weight of my road bike. No wonder I'm not top of the SCR food chain around my neck of the woods.0 -

I keep my identity secret (through a mixture of fear and shame). Suffice to say I'm a lot further down the food chain than you!
Really excellent pace, glad that you felt it though - a glimmer of humanity. That is a serious tarts bike though...!0 -

Cheers, I'm v pleased with that SS. It's nice to have made contact with another SCR'er, albeit a mystery one! Caning it into that wind hurt, but once you've made a bold move like that you can't just back down, so yeah it was painful.

Had a late run in this morning and there were some serious "distractions" along Embankment... London Fashion Week @ Somerset House obviously has something to do with it. Gutted I wasn't wearing my best lycra.
Encountered a fairly nippy yellow Lightspeed around HoP last night. Exchanging places at speed all the way to NKR where he hits the pavement in order to avoid the roadworks, and then jumps a red just after the chicane. Shame cos with that tailwind we were motoring.0 -

What's the FCN modifiier for an American Football Helmet?! Chap rolled up beside me at Balham crossroads with it on - had to double-take, safety conscious or what?!
Always remember in SCR there is always a bigger fish that you. Coming down Balham Hill towards the petrol station (heading north), was stuck behind two roadies - decided to give some beans before the rise up to Clapham South...I take both their scalps only for a tall SSer to take me in a triple pass manoeveur. He then proceeded to power up the hill and showed good pace all the way to Stockwell where we parted to company. I had to dig deep just to keep him in my sights. Good commute home last night, found a quick chap on a yellow/black/silver Giant road bike heading down South Lambeth Road. He headed towards Clapham once we got to Stockwell and had very good speed from the lights but didn't quite have the staying power - I gambled on this as I let him pull out a slight lead and then reeled him in and past well before Clapham North :-)
This mornings commute was one of those rides where everything just seems to click into place. I was pushing a slighly bigger gear then yesterday as the legs felt good and I actually used the gear change today (rode both commutes yesterday in the same gear!)
Hit pretty much every set of lights coming past Clapham Common at the right time, just as they changed to amber so went non-stop from one end to the other, splitting the lanes as I was moving marginally faster then the rest of the traffic :-)
Same again on the run to Stockwell once I'd passed Balham, pretty much non-stop until I got onto SLR. Did see some terrible RLJing by 2 cyclist and a highway maintenance VAN in Balham, for those that use the Drag Strip it was the set of lights near the roadworks before Clapham North that are semi-obstructed (on the left at least) by the railings. I'd already seen em change but apparently only me and 2 motorcyclist could be bothered to stop!
Found the chap on the rather nice looking Enigma bike that I'd had raced up Whitehall yesterday at Parlit Sq. again this morning. Didn't get to repeat the scorching ride I had yesterday as there where buses in the way but the newly surfaced section heading from PS - Trafalgar Square is silky smooth so perfect for a good sprint :-)0 -

Yes have seen a guy in full body armour on embankment a couple of times!!
Quite an annoying ride in today, had an off with an ped and lots of numpties pushing to the front at lights only to be easily overtaken etc...0 -
I've been off the bike for a few weeks, first day back yesterday. I know this has been mentioned a few times, but jesus the state of the roads. The holes in Embankment suggest someone's been building tarmac igloos, and Whitechapel Road looks like an army training course for Kabul.
A few hairy near misses last night dodging new ones.0 -
