This is why gears were invented you lunatics!

Mind you looking at all the cack on my transmission at the moment, I do envy the simplicity of a single sprocket.

    you get today's MTFU award...

today I was a disgrace, no one passed but the speeds I was doing (and I use the term speed loosely) would have invited pashleys to pass  ... I was almost glad ITB's fairy visited me to give me a rest, been thinking about new tyres for a while

More worrying was the spacer? between the spocket and the drop outs seems to be in real trouble as it's rusted to buggery and a 3rd has fallen off it

Fair point. I do tend towards mashing rather than spinning, so maybe 155 isn't actually that fast. Mind you, I've never actually measured my cadence, so who knows.

Another semi-pootle this morning. Took advantage of not many bikes on the road to spin a little in the 39 after Parlt Square. Still kept a close watch behind me, mind.

There I go getting myself into trouble  I haven't been out that way for a while actually, so we'll see whether I've still got the legs I think I have when my brother pops down from Derby to compare the relative merits of the Peak District and the North Downs. Tonights ride home felt really good - completely smashed it. :D

Saw a guy in a Kingston Wheeler turn off the embankment and over Battersea Bridge whilst I was waiting at the lights to go straight over. Was thinking that this a rare chance for a bit of SCR - Managed to hunt him down and fly past (admittedly he probably wasn't giving it any), then had to slow for a red light and to my horrow he just popped up onto the pavement RLJ'd and took a different turn. Still I'm calling it a good scalp.

Only downside was just before I got home I got left hooked by a royal mail van - to the point where I had to bail on the pavement, reg was BX 08 KPF - will report it when I get into work tomorrow.

Bike just gone in for a service so thats me on the tube tomorrow

I didn't chose a great night to bring the laptop, cables and work home...

Encountered two rapid SSers (one a FGer) before Southwark Bridge. Had a job keeping them in sight - bit of a shock to the legs and lungs. Was praying the second wind would come.

Then another roadie (on a white/red Specialized) picked up at Parlt Square, but the roadworks just after Parlt Square split us. The FGer was way ahead, the SSer about 20 yards ahead of me. Not let up in pace on Millbank, and didn't really gain any ground. And not really feeling any better than I was five minutes earlier, either.

Same story on DSC - things split a bit by traffic - but no let up in the pace. Was very thankful for the red lights at CB.

Lights go green and the two SSers are off, the FGer ahead, the SSer drafting him. The guy on the Spesh passes me, bridges the gap nicely and sits on the SSer's wheel. I'm about 20 yards back. Decide it's time to MTFU - I eat Yorkies for God's sake! - so put some speed on and pass them, but they're on my wheel so no slowing down. That was that really - the queues of traffic put an end to any SCR after that.

And WTH was with the temporary lights on the NKR this evening? They didn't seem to be changing green. It was carnage! :?

  • Met a broken, shell of a man in the bike shed this morning. I've overtaken him a few times along Portobello prom, but never thought anything of it as he's on a hybrid; A Charge Mixer to be precise.

Turns out he's never heard of the food chain, and he'd spent his entire ride looking over his shoulder in fear of me coming to scalp him.

:) Yep, it was me. Ditto when you overtook me on Millbank! The kick up the backside I needed

+1 for the roads being clearer (apart from that shambles just before Parlt Square, heading east, and the NKR).

Indeed, there were about 20 bikes sitting there for a good couple of minutes before it was obvious there was a fault. At least we can walk through them legally!

yes nice clear roads today, dropped a guy on a white willier twice and 3 ss'er were duely dispatched with minimum fuss.

Glad I had sunday off otherwise the clear roads would be a little wasted on me this week. got to work out a roughly suitable morning extension, but that would invlove getting up earlier.. it's doomed to failure I feel

  • Met a very nice chap on a "can't remember now" on HSK but it was very very clean it being the first time he was back in the game this year. Not much to see on way in. Playing with sitting in middle and last 3 at back. Then when I shift up its much more fun. Hit 29ish on the velvet of constitution hill.
Only other notable was a rather grumpy customer who with totally clear road and no cars behind him, didn't appreciate me pulling out from a side road in what I thought was more than enough space and he was going to pulling wide for up coming cars anyway. Not sure there was any need to be quite so offensive that early in the morning...

edit: ooh, he did have sks raceblades which I am now very much considering. Right width and easy of attachment to make them more than sensible. Short too so the 700 c curvature won't look too odd on a 26 inch.

-1C and ice-mottled roads until Putney made for an unpleasant start, but once in the big metropolis the thaw arrived and the sport began. Just one guy on a gun-metal grey frame and Liss carbon forks giving any probs . Stalked him from Chelsea until Temple then went for it, but immediately hit un feu rouge at John Carpenter street and had to peel off for the Blackfiars slipway ... another time, another time...

There was a tart on a chrome Bianchi fixie along the Embankment this morning who I had to scalp three times after he pushed to the front at red lights....if you're going to be slow, wait at the back.

Had a meeting in Fulham at 11 so didn't spot it was half term; set off about 10.30. Came in down Trinity Road, which was nice and clear, so really pushed it as I came onto the dual carriageway section. I still have my comp set in km, but a bit of mental arithmetic reckons I made 29-30mph on the flat sections (although technically they are very slightly downhill). Client was very understanding about having the meeting with me still in full lycra (nowhere to change in a semi derelict house), but this also meant that I was absolutely freezing when I set off again.
From Fulham, it was a bit clogged up until Sloane Sq, then I turned down onto the Embankment for another good blast. Shame there was no-one around to race. Think I'll swing back that way this evening for a bit of fun.

Two words to describe today's commutes: slow and painful.

Went out for a ride yesterday. First time since before Christmas, over 2 months since the last one in fact. In between then has been the over-indulgence of Christmas and New Year, coupled with three weeks off the bike (festivities, mechanical trouble, and snow and ice). Also a change in saddle and cleat set-up to shut up my grumbling knee. And I've only recently (less than a week ago) got over a pulled muscle in my ribs.

So with all that in mind, yesterday I went out and did nearly 70 miles through the Welsh hills, taking in as many long steep hills (starting with a 25% brute) as I could, descending on "roads" so full of potholes you'd barely realise there was tarmac on them, with brake blocks way past their expiry date, and the last 30 miles of which were a non-stop dash to escape the Welsh rain.

    Ouch.

FFS indeed. Glad I ignored the dry weather and put the Raceblades on this morning. Still not looking forward to it though. Just cleaned and relubed the chain this morning ready to get it covered in cack this evening. Think I might cancel the Embankment detour and take the shortest route this evening.
