Long days + working from home = almost no cycling at all :-(
I did manage to ride to Waitrose yesterday (I wore daytime clothes and everything) but this has got to stop (are you listening boss ?) !Misguided Idealist0 -

What a beautiful morning, i'm off to the local town (Marlborough) for a burger and to bore the arse off my LBS managerRule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.0 -
Page 2 guys?!! We're slacking!
So decided to do a different route into Victoria as I wanted a bigger run at the Embankment.
@BJ - basically did a return journey of your extension the other week.
Route: Tooting Broadway>(A24)>Tooting Bec, turn left at lights>Trinity Road all the way down and over Wandsworth Bridge>turn immediately right and thu Chelsea Harbour back roads to get me onto the Embankment.....you do get a stunning view with a clear morning from there of the Thames, power station and the various bridges overlapping into the distance. Very nice.
Bloody freezing when I left this AM at 7am and my road had a light dusting of sleet & frost. Not too much competition to report - 2 demi-scalps....guy on a Dolan coming up to CB put don't think he was trying and a Rapha wearing, Condor rider by the Tate ..had to take him at about 24mph and made it stick to LB before I turned left but not sure that's enough of a distance to claim a full scalp.
8 miles, 30 min.
Edit: Forgot to mention, new Cycle Surgery has opened on Palace Street, Victoria right under my office which is well, quite handy thankyou very much. Road stock consists of Pinarello (they have Dogma in the window - unfortunately not in your colours, Jash!), Wilier, Giant, Spesh."Come at the king, you best not miss." - Omar, The Wire

Not much to report my way this morning. Other cyclists very thin on the ground. Obviously they didn't bother to grit the roads south of Tooting last night so had a bit of 'fun' with the icy road shuffe.

On foot today and there is bugger all chance I will see any of you tomorrow unless you are also clinically insane and on the roads at 4.45am as I will be...

So : left the office about 4.30 on Friday so I had the last of the afternoon sun and then beautiful clear moonlight all the way to Devizes. It was a really pretty ride home AND THEN within 3 miles from one side of the town to the other the weather went from a crystal clear sky to driving horizontal snow in my face : from averaging over 17mph for the trip I was down to grinding away on the lowest gear on the compact, spitting out snowflakes and desperately trying to see over the top of my glasses. And then as quickly as it hit me it was gone 2 miles later. Completely mad!!
Could only manage 35 on Sunday morning as we had to go out : though I did get 5 miles in on the treadmill as well in the evening which hasn't hurt as much as I feared.
This morning came in straight down the A4 as the lanes were pretty icy and frosty. Just as well as SWHMBO had a big skid in the car through Stockley : no other traffic so she was ok. But what a miserable ride in. The traffic was evil and I lost count of the times that cars and vans came within a gnats whisker of me especially through Chippenham.
Caught and passed 3 hybrids on the way but no other roadies to play with. Going to do the longer ride home tonight to get some miles in as the forecast for the rest of the week is rotten.

Mixed bag this evening. One of my colleagues brought in a rather delicious rich chocolate cake, a slice of which was dispatched with a scattering of raspberries and extra thick cream - yum.
However, this cake was my downfall: by Kennington, I was feeling a wee bit queasy, and burping vigorously. Also, as a large amount of energy was being diverted to digesting said cake, I was running at about 70%. I thought I'd turned diesel: plenty of omph at low revs pulling away from the lights, but I kept topping out at about 20. Oh dear, oh dear.
Anyway, I carried on burping my way down through Blaham and by the time I got to Tooting, things had started to settle down a bit. Just after I turned off to head towards Mitcham I came across a pootling SSer - grey jacket, one flouro rim I think. As we passed the various ped crossings, we picked up speed, but I passed him without too much difficulty, only to realise a bit down the road that he was now just off my back wheel. We met up at the next lights, and I set off with a bit more vigour to try and shake him, but without much success. On the long stretch over Figges Marsh, he stayed resolutely glued to my back wheel, despite me giving it all my digestion-restricted legs could, but didn't come past, until I lost him at the roundabout coming into Mitcham. A good run, and glad to stay ahead, but it would have been nice to have a "thanks for the tow". A bit spent after that, so pootled the rest of the way home.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

I woke up at 7 this morning, and it was still dark! Clearly I went back to bed.0 -
Went home the long way last night and caned it up the hill to 5 Ways lights as I saw a flashing rear light half a mile ahead. Just caught him but he turned off towards Bradford.
Coming out of Melksham up the bypass spied another flasher ahead which turned out to be a Thorn but as I caught him he sat up a bit so I went past at a rate of knotts so nothing but a cheery hello and that was that.
Loads of traffic out of Bath, and then through Devizes so I only averaged 16.5mph but it was a lovely ride home - and snow free!!

Not much in the way of SCR today bar a rather strange looking chap on a trendy fixie - deep V mismatched rims, weird baseball cap helmet and orange shoes , who kept RLJing, and then losing his scalp (4 times I think). The top of his head must be a bit sore by now.
Also bumped into (figuratively speaking) that Dynamo chap on the unusual black and yellow Specialized I mentioned the other day. Turns out that although he is definitely not interested in any SCR (he said as much), he is a genuinely nice chap (my previous experience of Dynamo riders is being ignored by their chain gang in RP), and he said some nice things about my bike too. Morning, sir, in the unlikely event that you're reading this. That and the warmer weather made for a very pleasant journey, but still a shame he's not up for a race - didn't really feel right scalping after the nice chat we had.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! I had been to Sainsburys on the way to work and I was just approaching my place of employment when I was overtaken.
By a Halfords Carerra.
Ridden by a woman.
A middle aged slightly overweight woman.
In a pencil skirt.
She said something like "you aren't as fast as you look" as she meandered past in a perfectly timed attack. As I was then in front of work and had to stop and go to the bike shed.0 -

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Surely you should have continued, regained your dignity, then looped back to work. Mind you that would have looked pretty weird. Probably best to just try and forget about it.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Giant SCR, baggies, rack with rack bag? Chapeau Sir! You handed it out nicely from Vauxhall Cross through to E&C (and I expect beyond).
Pity I was in a car, we could have played.David

SCALP!!!!
Today was my first ride to work in, ooh, let's say, 9 months.
New bike is MUCH heavier than old bike, 28mm tyres, mudguards, pannier rack and one pannier loaded with lock (admittedly not much else). Also, I decided that today was not the day to be overcooking it as the car is b*ggered and I need these legs to work all week, potentially.
Imagine my surprise when I went sailing past a guy on a road bike, with mudguards but no luggage. And imagine my further surprise when I found the journey had taken the same time it did last April.
I think it is possible that I am BACK IN THE GAME............
Don't know what my new FCN is. Must work it out
Edit: my FCN is 8 I think. His was 7.Emerging from under a big black cloud. All help welcome0 -

Got hit by a car this morning within 200m of leaving the house - was filtering up the left of two cars waiting to turn right, when the second decided they’d rather go straight on and pull straight into me. Fortunately was at low speed and no damage done – still not the best start and then for the rest of my journey saw a few other bikes but nothing offering a decent scalp.
The winter season has seriously hit my fitness and I’ve got a horrible feeling that the next time I come across someone remotely quick I’m gonna be in trouble. That said I’ll be altering my route home tonight to take in the Vauxhall Bridge – Clapham – Balham drag strip. You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quin.0
