11th to the 14th for road repairs. Barriers across the road by the ballet school end of the car park, on the road down to Robin Hood gate and also on the shared path junction heading towards Ham Cross. A bit of judicious CX taking the gravel paths at either end of the car park means it's not really a problem for those heading from Sheen Cross to Ham Cross.
I always use that junction to practice my cornering - grippy, decent sight lines, and a run-out that's messy enough to make you commit to the corner without actually being dangerous. Taking it at speed will be a total nightmare if, as I suspect, they chip & seal it...

As in the junction from the narrow path to the road past pen ponds cafe? I've had many close calls with cyclists turning out of that to go up towards the Ballet school without looking for me coming down from the ballet school. It seems most end up fully in the gutter as they turn out.

Did a little extended commute home. RP full of cars going up Sawyers. Good job really as there was cross headwind blowing and I'm fat. A couple of the quicker/braver riders going up the middle of 2 lines of traffic. Then did a little climb of the draggy rather than steep Copse Hill up to the ridgeway in Wimbledon. Very enjoyable. I've got a bit lazy over the summer.
  • Tried out the new route on way home tonight, I'm moving to Eden Park so it's looking like Lambeth Bridge, Oval, Camberwell, Denmark Hill, Green Dale, Calton Ave, Dulwich Village, past the gallery then the school, and up to the top of Sydenham Hill (I went Gipsy Hill/Dulwich Wood Ave/Farquhar Rd which was OK on the SS). From the top it is a simple case of down Anerley Hill and follow your nose pretty much the rest of the way, through Elmers End and so 'home' (will be home from next Friday all being well).

45 mins door to door tonight, not bad with the extra climbing and the usual wind. Quite liked the route, if there's any bit I'm not keen on it's Oval-Camberwell-Denmark Hill so if anyone can recommend an alternative way of getting from the West End to Dulwich I'd be keen to hear it.

Same for the buzzards and red kites, i rode right up to one sat by the side of the road before it flew away.

Rather depends on the area, Kites around Hayes are bold as brass, ones nr my folks in the Beacons most of the time is just a spot in the sky.

Royal Park deer are very tame, I go though Bushy-Crane-Hounslow heath. There are deer in all three parks but Crane/Hounslow they are seen briefly and at speed!

Headwind was a bit heavier than expected tonight, was dripping with sweat by the time I got home

It's the time of year too where what's needed in the morning clothes-wise is pretty different to the home run for me. Was dribbling all over myself homeways this eve at a very slow pace in a long sleeved jersey. Next few days look very nice though weatherwise down in the south. Wind swinging around but hopefully quite benign. And lots of sun!

Was told last night by a fellow commuter that he couldn't believe the amount of sweat coming off me. That was before the snot started to fly.

That is a compliment. No doubt about it...

We have this exact conversation every September: Arm warmers (and a gilet if necessary).

In the hope of pre-empting the conversation we have every October: Leg warmers.

Ha ha, did we? I was checking that my leg warmers might last one more season just the other day. Roll on the falling leaves and frozen puddles!

Ok, so what's happened to the Lower Richmond Road the last two mornings?

Has there been a mini-rapture or something?

No queues until just before Putney Bridge.

Reassuringly, lots of other roads are still knackered, so I won't be reaching for the comfort blanket just yet.

Otherwise, a somewhat scary attempted close pass by a car on Priory Lane last night. It boxed in at least one cyclist behind me, and threatened to box me in between him and a cyclist just ahead: the front of their car was overlapping my rear wheel and I could have unclipped the right leg and rested my foot on its bumper. Had no real option but to jump out of the saddle and hammer ahead.

    Sake...
    FCN 2-4.

"What happens when the hammer goes down, kids?"
    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."

Not this time. It was silver, and was a small car - you know, a Micra or something. Beeped the horn in protest at... well, I'm not sure; maybe us just being there?!

They're having the day off because they thought you were WFH (what with today being a Friday and everything...)

  • Annoying rider home last night with some nodder cube rider jumping lights so always needing over take him before losing him near Wimbledon only to find him and overtake him again.

This morning's joy was almost going under a S Walsh & Sons tipper truck in Kennington when he swung into the bus lane to dodge around a car with no looking or indicating. Good job the Po po were ticketing cyclists 200 yards further up the road, the real danger sorted there chaps.
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.
  • Solid two-up riding all the way from Vauxhall Bridge to Kingston Gate into the headwind last night, the chap was on a silver Colnago. Always good to share a bit of the load when the legs were feeling a bit tired.

Didn't hammer it this morning, want to try to stop frying my legs at the end of every week to see if it makes any difference for my Sunday morning spin. But knowing me I'll get into some SCR action tonight, put the hammer down, and undo all my careful riding this morning.........

Haha, I was out of the door at my usual time (about 7.15am). You know, about the same time as you are chewing through your 3rd bowl of Shreddies.

Remembers family responsibilities...*pikes out to collect daughter from after-school club*

    Another time though!
  • 2 fingers to the stupid bint who so nearly took me out on OKR.

Doing a fair lick coming from the lights towards KFC and she pulls across me.

To be honest I was waiting for the impact.

She then proceeds to throw all verbals at me!!! Amateur hour though. Comment on her size and the fact she's off to KFC I was on my merry way.

The deer have definitely gone nuts, or at least it’s their nuts causing the madness. Nearly got collected by a fallow stag that burst out of some bracken and darted across the path right in front of me, his poxy cloven hooves sliding under him. No time to brake it was so sudden, scared the bejeesus out of me.
  • Felt especially strong and nimble this morning, dancing up hills, powering up to speed from the lights in a few swift pedal strokes, cornering like a greased weasel on rails. Got to the office and realised I'd forgotten the two D-locks which are usually bungee'd to my rack - cue sheepish explanations when the boss gets in and finds my bike propped up in the corner of the office...
  • Just enough of a tailwind to make it easy this morning. Managed to beat the rain to the office which is always a plus. Came across an accident between Stockwell and Oval at the start of left hook alley, looked like a van hooked a mopedist whos bike then spilled its entire tank of petrol across the road so could be like an ice rink there for a time. Mopedist seemed to be ok.

None of that when I rolled through later, had my new 40's on today, I really can't work out if I like then or I'm realising 30's are the best middle ground. Felt subtle and planted but a bit bouncy over badly laid tarmac (i.e. some of Kingston's old bike lanes).

Towed some lump on a spesh in a blue jersey up most of CS7 so am off to flyby to see who the lazy fcuker was.

Spotted a chap doing laps in the park this morning. His laps appeared to consist of taking tows from people all the way round. That's boost his Strava estimated power curve.

Well that's a first: Had to stop for a heron crossing the road down from the ballet school in RP this morn.
