Came the closest I ever have been to being taken out by a deer today. On my way up from Robin Hood gate to Roehampton and there are three deer running parallel to me on the grass but in the opposite direction. The look a little spooked and two of them look a little young so I move right to give them plenty of room.

Of course, I failed to notice the fourth deer coming to join them from the right. Fortunately I managed to throw out some anchors and he changed direction at the last minute. He must have had some target fixation as I was the only thing on the road for 100m in either direction.

Yeah they were playing silly buggers all the way from Dark Hill to Roehampton Gate when I went through, including sauntering into the road on the decent from Broomfield. But id rather random deer than the close pass I got off a bus on Kingston Hill, I got about 6 inches room while he was doing at least 30. Scared the bejesus out of me. The idiot then nearly ploughed into a car at the Albert pub lights.

someone last night wasn't quite as lucky last night (possibly deer related, though maybe not). looks like he misjudged the apex of the broomfield right hander and was in a right state. could see his chin had been scraped raw and had multiple contusions on his face. looked in a bad way. was going at a fair rate of knots over the rise before that and was in a bit of a rush.

the big old deer that resides near the base of broomfield was present.... that one that's the size of a small car. had a few deer related moments yesterday, and was reminded these 3-4 weeks are when more people get hit by deer in the park more than most. stay frosty folks.
That boy is truly magnificent. I think anyone who does Broomfield in either direction has a story about an encounter with him. I came through there once on the way in during rutting season (think it was late October, cos it was still not fully light). I was taking it relatively easy down Broomfield cos I was aware of the threat of random males getting aggressive - when I encountered this fella at the bottom of the last swooping bend, looming out of the mist like a f***ing rhino. He was stood a foot from the road, staring me out. Up until then I'd never really seen him from that close up - I absolutely sh*t meself as I slowed even more to pass him - on the other side of the road - and he snorted at me. What a specimen (and I'm not talking about what nearly ended up in my pants)

Brown trouser moment on the way home. Coming down Priory Lane at a reasonable lick when someone turned into Clarence Lane across me. Very hard on the anchors, off the back of the saddle and a swerve right meant I wasn't a stain on the road, but there were definitely skid marks.

It's 2 miles from my office if I wanted to go out at lunch time and smash 30 minutes of laps is that allowed, their website is all about booking events

Yes. Watch out for pedestrians, people on hybrids going in the opposite direction, triantelopes staring at their front hub, but very much open to the public when its not booked. Sight lines are mostly pretty good, so keep your wits about you and you'll be fine at race pace.

Edit: watch out for glass on lap 1

It’s normally empty in the week, I work very close to it (maybe 10 mins away) I very occasionally pass though it and park on way home, or when at work on foot. I keep meaning to see the recumbents in full flight!

Baselayer returns. Thermal shorts tested. Lovely.
  • Snapped chain on the SS yesterday due to wheel slippage (new chain and chain tug on the way to hopefully fix and solve that one) meant I was stranded up at the GF's without anything to pedal this morning. I was gearing up to get the bus then realised as I'm in NW I can get an uber Jump bike! How very exciting I thought... Maybe very slightly better than a Santander but only slightly. Put too much power down and the chain/gear slips, it seems to lock the wheels when you stop and takes a pretty large amount of force to get it going again (which then causes previously mentioned slippage) Pulling away was then fun but only up until about 10/12mph as the assistance wound down so much that it couldn't really overcome the rubbing brakes/tyre/whatever else was causing buckets of friction.

And it cost me £3.28 so slightly more than double the bus fare. Was a bit quicker and still more fun though, I suppose

Well i have enough bikes and kit to leave a couple of sets at work, on the off chance of a few more days of reasonable weather left in 2019

Unless it’s actually raining I think it drains well, or could try CX action though possibly that might be unwise.....

My best result there was while it was snowing, just a pity I died 2m before the line.

It's fine in the rain (from a safety perspective; it's obviously still a bit miserable). The durface is super-grippy; you can ride a TT bike round the hairpin, flat-out, in the aero bars, regardless of how wet the surface is.

  • School traffic chaos is back in full swing. Joyfully I came across the skinny guy on the white trek who's very amusing to play with as he can never suffer an over take despite the variability of his speed. Sadly he jumped a light before I could fully embrace this strategy.

Where you around Bank this morning? I am sure I clocked you or someone who is your exact twin.

Yep, would have been crossing Queen Victoria St into Threadneedle at about 8:15. Red Jersey, knee warmers and pterodactyl socks. You on foot or next to me at the lights?

I was on foot but across the road, saw you turning left onto Bartholomew St through the throng of peds.

32KPH.... that ruins the entire point of the cycle highways. I though the purpose was so I could beat the tube, bus or car across zones 1 - 3.

On a separate note. Gone from 13 - 22T to 11-29T.... holey moley. No wonder I DESPISED climbing.
  • Had a very late ride into town today, it was a bliss flying into Putney at around 10.15am with virtually no traffic on LRR.

The speeding law doesn't apply to non motorised vehicles :D

Always difficult to take that corner without looking a proper douche cutting through the peds but the lack of looking by them is staggering.

Not seen it but I know Adrian and also follow him on Strava.

  • Spent the first half pursuing one fast guy (Ineos kit, white Cube) from Downham up to Lewisham, then the second half chasing a guy on a Cinelli SS along Lewisham Way and along the OKR to E&C. Legs feeling strong atm so enjoyed the challenge.

Weirdly, my strava average was more or less the same as my overall Garmin average (and on Strava, moving time and elapsed time are showing as exactly the same, despite a fair few red light stops, some relatively lengthy). Can't really explain that - looks like Strava has diddled me out of a higher moving ave by counting me as 'moving' for longer than I actually was. I'm fuming, obvs.

Moving to Beckenham area at the end of the month so last few weeks on the current route. Not sure yet what the new route will be but will defo be hillier and I'm guessing will bring me into range of a few more riders from here.

Think I was behind Pearcy in the park this morning.

He pulled away on the way up Dark Hill and then I caught back up before we arrived at Broomfield. Deer stopped play there and then he and a chap in an an orange POC helmet (not rower63) were much more aggressive at filtering past slow moving cars on the way up towards Roehampton gate. Managed to catch them again before exiting the park but then a busy Priory Lane put paid to any further developments.

  • Later start today. Guy on what looked a bit like a bikepacking set-up, front rack bag and frame bag on an unbranded silver frame with those wide swept bars, setting a reasonable pace through Downham up to Lewisham. Also clad in double denim - a distinctive look for sure. Followed at a safe distance as he was doing the 'flat bar tuck' technique of hands in the middle of the bar (ie off the brakes) - just get drop bars if you're bothered about aero!

We were both surprised by a guy on a Holdsworth who came charging through at the Catford lights and set off for Lewisham pushing 30mph . We set off in pursuit and formed a very fast group - then there was a heart in mouth moment when a van pulled across the front of the group (bikepacker was hands off brakes of course) and not long after that I turned off into the hospital to take my new route through the park, up Vicars Hill and through Hilly Fields, rejoining Lewisham Way by Lewisham College. As an aside - My suspicions that this route is slower than just staying on the main roads through Lewisham and up Loampit Hill were more-or-less confirmed, as I found bikepacker guy (who had stayed on the main route) further up Lewisham Way. We parted company at New Cross, he heading off in the direction of Peckham to do something cool.

Only other action was a bloke on a silver Merida who was quite quick along the OKR, pedalling a slow cadence in his biggest gear. However, having set an alright pace in the final Bricklayers sprint, he faded badly along NKR so I suspect it was a case of putting in a big Strava dig rather than a sustainable high pace. Traffic from that point on was horrendous, but I asserted dominance over the many riders on Waterloo Bridge as best I could in the conditions.

Legs suddenly not feeling that great today - perhaps I am mortal after all.
  • Headwind was a bit heavier than expected tonight, was dripping with sweat by the time I got home
