perhaps you bashed your head and imagined them asking if you're okay ..?

So, first time of riding on a "Boris" (pffft) bike yesterday. I particularly enjoyed mixing it with some folks who are way up the food chain as I crossed a bridge near Waterloo.
They do run out of gears very quickly, I was quite surprised to find that I was in the biggest gear.
Lost count of the number of scalps I claimed - too easy when you're on one of those things.

Bike had developed one or two extra squeaks by the time I returned it
    "Impressive break"

    "Thanks...

Was it me or was it super mental on the roads last night? Literally every yard from the city to Putney was a clusterf~*k.

Did give a cheery wave and hi to Rhodrich in RP in case you were wondering who that particular loon was!
  • Train-w**kered in this morning, as have to be on the road early this afternoon.

Did see MTB-Idle single-speeding through CW looking as happy as Larry

I did realise it was you, after you'd passed! I was slightly blinded by the super bright jersey you were wearing though!

 it's Friday, it's sunny, it was probably very close to 9 o'clock as I had a lay in this morning and I had just powered past someone on the col de Westferry circus and I was feeling smug.

It was awful. My average speed was woeful.

How the heck do people sit in cars day after day, tolerating this cr@p? My eldest has started swimming at different pools, and after a week of b0ll0cks traffic down towards Hampton Court, we switched to the bikes for the journey to and from one of the pools. It's around four miles each way, depending on the route you take (road, river or Bushy Park), but number of single-occupancy cars along there is bonkers.

Traffic was shocking last night, but Rhodrich and I bumped into each other at HoP and had a leisurely spin back to Kingston together. Nice weather made it quite pleasant.

    Bugger.

    RIP.

I use that junction on my commute, coming up Silverthorne from Clapham and turning right onto Wandsworth Road (and the reverse on the way back), but worked from home yesterday.

Lots of lorries on Wandsworth road due to the construction projects in Nine Elms. Incidentally, the same road where a truck almost right hooked me last week.

An unprecedented peloton of fastish riders coalesced south of Catford last night - I have never known such a grouping there on the way home. It's rare enough in the mornings.

One guy in particular had raised my hackles earlier on the OKR by coming back past me at a significantly faster pace than he'd been doing at the point I'd overtaken him - a clear case of wounded pride, confirmed when I retook the lead as he didn't trouble me again the rest of the OKR. But I hadn't seen the last of him. The usual delays through Lewisham, and once on the open road to Catford a car turning across the bus lane forced me to slow and swerve to the outside. As I was winding back up to speed, he comes past again, taking me by surprise.

Then in Catford, three other guys suddenly appear. I hung behind a bus waiting at the lights but the others squeezed through, so once I was clear of the bus I had two groups of two up the road to chase down, which I set to doggedly. Another red at Selco and things were almost back together, still two groups of two ahead with me at the back but all well in touch. I made my first attack in the next stretch approaching Bellingham, passing the first group, one of whom attached himself to my wheel, then immediately passing the front group. Another red at Bellingham, but changing to green as I got there - a hard acceleration and I was clear.

Things then got slightly absurd as Downham hove into view, another big group of cyclists ahead (at least four) who I blasted straight past. I'm a bit of a sneak as I don't go up Bromley Hill itself, instead turning off for Coniston Rd which runs parallel. As I turned off the main road, I looked back to see a big group of at least seven or eight riders all together (as I say, unprecedented), gave them a wave, and, still dreading pursuit, 'powered' up the hill alone with what little energy I had left.

I can't really claim it was enjoyable - I find the homeward journey hard work at the best of times and for some reason (probably basic lack of speed, first and foremost), I find my effort is rarely rewarded with fast Strava times, yesterday being no exception. But hey ho, I did derive a certain grim satisfaction from the win, having risked all on a bold attack.

WFH today thankfully, daughter's sports day this afternoon - where I am not at all confident of anything like the same success in the Dads' race...

Scalps of the weak/week would be a good sub-thread title. In fact i may use it for my Strava ride home this evening...

Saw a bloke brushing his teeth behind the wheel this morning in Ladywell, that was a new one on me. So watch out for a patch of toothpaste on the road in Lewisham somewhere which he was presumably planning to gob out of the window when finished.

Chaos this morning on CS7 as the Northern line was suspended and a mass of people who are usually underground were walking along the pavement heading north. I first noticed the increase in pedestrian traffic as far south a Morden and realised there was a problem.

Somehow this lead to increased traffic on the roads and the cycle commuting hordes were immense so there was no point in trying any SCR.

On the positive side this lead to cyclists achieving critical mass from Oval tube onwards particularly that bit where they have dug up the cycle lane just past the Oval lights heading north and forced cyclists onto the road in a little coned off section.

There were so many riders that we simply stayed on the road and took up both lanes from there to the Toulouse Lautrec pub.

Similar thing happened a couple of weeks back. Dozens of people at every bus stop (spilling into the cycle path) and lots of peds running, often across bike lanes, to catch buses that were about to leave. Made the CS7 into an obstacle course.

CS8, on the other hand, was quieter than usual!
