Well that was a bit windy.

Almost got right-hooked by a dumper lorry on Wandsworth Road and had to slam on the acnhors to avoid cycling into his front left wheel. Gormless driver stared at me as if it was my fault. Lady crossing the road that he turning in to also had to run to avoid him.

Got it all on video though, so think i'll report him.

The company was called Charles Muddle, who I've never heard of.

A tad breezy for the ride home last night. Typically headwind all the way home. Lewes Road northbound is no fun when it's like that.
Any challengers held off with relative ease in spite of them using me as a huge mobile windbreak!

Bare headwind this morning. Done my back a mischief grinding into it I think. Ugh. Gear down, don't push harder on the same ratios, you're too old for that.

Public service last night - helped to push a broken down van clear of a junction with another couple of cyclists. Also a spot of SCR with one of those cyclists, although nothing definitive.

Edit: Just thought to check strava - it was dekant off here. It was dark and wet last time we crossed paths I think, hence my failure to recognise bike or rider!

When someone is tucked in behind you on their deep sections, trying to avoid the wind.

And they're down on their tri-sticks.

    That.

To be fair, I have built up a new bike since last time and have got a new helmet and glasses. The latter is the cyclist's equivalent of facial reconstruction.

I had contact with a large coach last evening. Waiting in the bike area at the Vaux Br lights, the first vehicle behind in the straight-on lane was a huge coach. As the lights went green, he moved up to pass us all, and to vigorously claim his road space to the extent that his left wheels were a couple of inches from the painted edge on the bike lane. At the point he was actually touching my elbow with his front left corner, I thumped the front of coach as hard as I could, I hope I dented it. He tooted his horn.

Later, whilst ascending Broomfield, I hear "hey Magnus!" - I bumped into Dizzy Dane and we chatted from there to Kingston Gate.

This morning's headwind was hard, relieved by me bringing in my old steel Bottecchia, bumping into Davon, who was responsible to procuring much of its hardware for me (front and rear mechs, NOS), and mutually admiring another steel-frame that I quite often see, a Geoff Wiles.

That's a lovely bike. I chat to him quite often - but I forget his name. He wrote it off in an accident involving an Uber on the Embankment about 6 months ago, but has had it all repaired (new top and down tube!).

    Steel is real!

  • Gah, headwind, failing gear shifting and a hangover did not combine well for today's commute in.

Headwind again this morning, fairly stiff one too. Took the best bike into work, got chatting with a nice Irish guy about it while waiting for the lights to change at Vauxhall Bridge.

Bit like a Pied Piper ride, every time I took a glance behind there were 2 or 3 wheelsuckers - heads down, knees a blur, elbows out, mouth wide open. Was kinda funny to put a squeeze in and let the elastic snap.

Headwind? Crosswind? Both? Advancing decrepitude? Whatever it is, it was a bit of an effort this morning. Didn't seem like a taily last night either, despite everyone else on Strava getting pots galore, I found it a chore.

Two days of PT for me because of post work bevvies and food. The headwind on the way to the bacon sarnie shop was stiff this morning with a hangover.
  • Headwind plus panic faff of forgetting my gear shifter cable snapped on the commuter last night so bike change needed before leaving the house.

Like above I did play pied piper, annoyingly to a woman in trainers who seemed difficult to drop. She had an orange POC lid on so maybe a Rower relation, so explaining the pace.

I'm in Avignon this week with the bike. Unfortunately it seems to have coincided with the hottest temperatures ever recorded in France

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48795264

(Scroll down to see Carpentras get a mention, that's where we are getting the train to and starting our rides).

Needless to say but it's very difficult to ride. The ascent of Mont Ventoux from Bedoin on Wednesday took me four hours instead of the two last year on the first leg of the Cingles. I was also totally broken at the top having consumed about six litres of water along the way (although I recovered for the camera). No way could I have attempted another ascent never mind two more...

    Back home tomorrow.

Oh wow, Mont Ventoux is tough enough at 20C . When did you begin your climb? I'm in northern Spain ATM, and although both Wednesday and Thursday were insufferably hot in the afternoons, temperatures were almost pleasant until noon or so.

That was also an issue, as we are staying in Avignon we had to get a train to Carpentras and then ride to Bedoin so it was midday before we started the climb #maddogs

Were you on the BBC news this morning, they were talking to a chap in Bedoin about cycling up Ventoux in the heat.
