  • Cycled in with Mrs Idris

    She gets a QOM

She credits this on Strava to a succession of green lights, rather than the Mr Idris-shaped hole in the air in front of her

    *sigh*

Or perhaps buy better quality white shirts...

How nice was a cooler night last night, utter bliss. I felt sorry for a fast guy with a semi fraembag on CS7, good pace, I could/would not keep up but he got nailed by every set of lights and filtering to the extent he had to overtake me a number of times.

London, I've come to expect 24 on the way in and 28+ on the way home.

I had my arm warmers on in London this morning but shed them after a bit. I've been putting off fitting mudguards to my new commuter but it seems inevitable that I'll have to ruin it soon.

    Two weird altercations this week.

The first was on Tuesday evening. Riding a very wide road at a decentish pace, a woman in a small car passes me. Plenty of space, no dramas. She then slows for a bus that has pulled out, but there's still plenty of space on the left where the (kind of) bike lane runs. I cruise back past, no dramas. I hear a beep, and turn around confused to see the her gesticulating wildly, clearly in a blind rage. I slow slightly, a cue husband to unwind window and start screaming inaudible abuse.

Genuinely, have no idea what the issue was, there was absolutely tons of space around.

The second came last night while riding home up a long hill. Took my (compulsory here) helmet off for it as I didn't see why the nanny state should ensure I arrive home with a crippling migraine. Cue fellow cyclist swearing at me as I pass him - obviously I swore back.

Kiwis are so laid back that any sort of altercation is always really out of the blue.

Fun to see Dekant this morning on the Southark Sexier Panther. He looked the proper SC racer in club kit, on snazzy carbon frame and DA wheels (in the rain)! :D

Interesting SCR this morning that lasted pretty much the entire commute from Wimbledon.

Set off on the 'A' bike with full club kit, so obviously can't let the side down. Immediately see what I think is an easy scalp and put a bit of a squeeze on however they prove very difficult to shake and I have trouble staying ahead. Notice that they don't slow down for traffic lights or cars etc so should probably be DQd anyway but decide to press on and really give it an effort.

This lasts pretty much all the way in to work with them getting stronger and stronger as I start to flag and am just about to be caught when I manage to swing off into my building so I'm declaring it as a win.

Definitely a Mastercard™ feeling to beat the rain in though!

p.s. also had time for a quick chat for Kingdav as mentioned at the top of Southwark bridge. Sorry for not spotting you!

Progress in the Audi nutjob case.

No riding of any kind for me. Changed chain on tuesday night only for the jockey wheels in my rear mech to give up the ghost. Parts arriving to fix today hopefully.

Had actual SCR and I actually commuted* on the bike.

I encounter a trackstander at a level crossing. Higher up the SCR foodchain, and has a Rick Chasey cambs extra modifier by being significantly bigger.

Anyway, he sets off once the train passes but instantly goes a different direction.

I encounter him trackstanding around 10 minutes later at a set of lights.

Followed, passed, held the lead for a good minute but then had to turn off. I guess it counts as half a scalp.

*to a station further down the commute.

Lovely temps to ride in this morning, and I see a lot of nodders have melted in the drizzle making the CS nice and clear.

Also, it appears that WyndyMilla are opening a new shop in the gate house of Bushy Park where Chestnut Avenue meets Hampton Court Road. Saw a banner hanging off the building this morning but didn't read it so I could be mistaken.

  • Nothing in my body or legs after an odd eating choice/pattern this morning. Primarily caused by efforts last night but chapeaux to a guy in Solo kit for towing me and two Richie Porte fan boys with music up Priory Lane.

As an addendum, is that pic in the Standard (of Simon Pegg?) a new one, hadn't noticed it in either of the videos so there must have been a third set of footage?

    Probably known to police then...

Had an issue this morning, very slick paving slabs from I guess a rain dust mix meant my bike didn't turn when the wheel did. Relatively unscathed though, mainly slid.

It's always slippery when it rains after a long dry spell.

Agreed, but it rained loads on Tuesday, and then last weekend.

Thought it was a lovely morning for it actually, roads were deserted, it wasn't cold, it was far drier in London than at home, no wind. One of my quicker rides in!

Swearing at you about the lack of a helmet?

I don't get why people get bothered by other people not wearing helmets. It's their choice (even if it may be the law over there).

Thought I'd seen it all over the years on CS7 however saw someone this morning actually wearing a wet suit riding through Stockwell. To be fair, it was rolled down to the waist however curiously he was also riding a fixie wearing skate shoes. Might have been some kind of lesser spotted Triantelope given the local tri club vest.

I think one of the triantelope clubs uses a lake near where I live for training; quite common to see groups of people running around in tri suits. The other week one of them was running in tri suit, swimming cap, goggles (on forehead) and hand paddles. Given that cycling normally comes between swimming and running, I wonder whether I missed the spectacle of this guy riding his bike in the same garb...

Wonder if he thought the hand paddles give some kind of aero advantage.

There's a chap (silver hair, looks to be in his 50s) who rides down Embankment until BB, I think, on a track bike, wearing white shoes, white shorts, and a white sleeveless top.

I've assumed he's Italian, but, nonetheless, that takes some balls.

Ah, that's probably it. Given how much we love to slate triantelopes for their erratic bike handling, it seems like a reasonable sport to exist.

I wonder about the profusion of multi-sport disciplines - swim/bike/run; bike/run; swim/run; ski/shoot; bike/run/row; fence/swim/horse/shoot/run; swim/bike/canoe/run; chess/boxing (yes, really!), the list is almost endless. How long until we reach the point when there's a sport with the perfect combination of disciplines for any competitor, but those competitors are so thinly spread across a gazillion different sports that there's almost no-one for them to compete against...

I did a couple of these about, er, well, um, over ten years ago, and then one last week (with a sea swim) while on holiday. I can't swim well at the best of times; trying to swim after a run was horrific.
