A regular ride in Essex.

hello all 8)
Are these rides open to newcomers? I'm new to mountainbiking and have been riding mainly on the roads to try and improve my fitness. It would be nice to ride off road with people who know the trails, as long as they don't mind waiting for me if I can't keep up! I know where one tree hill is, I sometimes ride around the roads near there eg Dry Street.
Many thanks!0 -

welcome to join us mate. more the merrier.
MUDDYLEGGS i'm off next week too, was thinking of a trip somehere during the day one day? fancy somwhere different?
I was going to go to CYB but with this weather it aint much fun on sharp slippery rocks?0 -
I fancy some where different, but Head Office will say otherwise.
Its my first weeknd off in quite along time so if I can do anything it will be a short local ride. Sorry.0 -

OK cool, I'll keep my eyes on this thread, hopefully I won't be working when you're all out next 8)
Do you guys use SPD's when riding off road? I've been using them on road and find them really good. Are they a liability off road, or does it come down to personal preference? Appologies if this is derailing the thread.0 -
I use them. (crank bros) but its down to preference, it is almost a big an argument as hardtail / full suspension!
i think this weekend we'll end up in warley / thorndon if anyone wants to join a probabaly slow muddy ride?0 -
Welcome aboard Terror Stain.
It is personal preference really; I have been using spd for nearly year and would not go back to anything else.
If you plan to do a bit of racing you will really see the advantages.
Also with the terrain round here on Langdon hills they are very useful we spend more time riding up hills then we ever do going down them.
Keep an eye on this thread people are always organising rides.0 -

Ah OK, I thought as much!
I've not been to Thorndon/Warley before, just rode along a couple of A roads near Brentwood. What day will you be going?muddylegs wrote:Welcome aboard Terror Stain.

I won't be doing any racing thats for sure, just trying to get fit!! I think I will keep the SPD's on but take a pair of flat pedals for when I try off road, that way at least I can swap them over if I keep falling over trying to unclip my feet on the quick!
What part of Langdon Hills do you ride, is it just around One Tree Hill area? Do you ride in the area behind the Crown pub (Westleigh Heights) or maybe the other side of Dry Street (where that car parking area is at the junction of Dry Street and Staineway)? Are there trails behind the church at the top of South Hill?
Cheers 8)0 -

Short notice, I know but I'm heading over to LH tmoorrow am (about 9.30ish) for the first time. If any regulars are available it'd be great to be pointed in the right direction. Presume the first car park on Lower Dunton Road is the place to be? I'll be there - sliver Mondy. I'll be the short, unfit one...
:oops:Don't you just hate it when people ask rhetorical questions...0 -
Not riding Sunday sorry, going to the Cycle Show at Earls Court.0
-
probably a bit late to ask, but is there anyone riding near One Tree Hill or Langdon Hills tomorrow? If so what time and where abouts if its alright for me to tag along.
Thanks, Joe0 -
I won't be doing Langdon / One Tree or Warley / Thorndon, but cheers for the offer. I'm gonna had up to Hadleigh and try and link some of the bits I found today together. So if anyone wants to join feel free just let me know.......0
-
I've drawn the short straw and have got to work tommorrow, so no riding for me
I'll check back on this thread to see when the next ride is taking place, hopefully I'll be able to make it, I'm looking forward to riding some new routes
Cheers 8)0 -
Had an enjoyable few hours at LH on Friday. Rode from the Reservation Centre to One Tree Hill via Westleight Heights (and getting lost a few times), mainly on the blue dotted route on the LH plan. Was a bit wary of riding off the route for fear of riding where I shouldn't..! Got a bit lost again riding back from One Tree Hill and ended up riding past a whole area of stables, coming out much further down the Lower Dunton Road than I expected.
Thought it was fine for a 'get-out-and-ride' route but not much singletrack (not sure whether there is any that bikes are allowed on) but will definitely be visiting again. The short, sharp uphills almost had my lungs bursting. At least I only pushed twice... :oops:Don't you just hate it when people ask rhetorical questions...0 -
Buckle, there is some singletrack and a short downhill (0.5 mile ish). Thats on my local loop. There is some great stuff around there, although I don't really know One Tree Hill very well.
I would be happy to show you around Langdon Hills if you wanted to go there again.

Hi guys I have finally got a working bike, although it's a rigid singlespeed. Can most of the trails you guys have been riding be completed on a rigid singlespeed do you think?
Or will I at least need some gears?0 -

I too will try and pop over to Thorndon next Sunday Morning. I've been over there a couple of times before but I get a little bored on my own!
I'll just need to keep watching this thread and meet some of you sometime.0 -

Thanks Joe. I'll give you a shout in a couple of weeks if that's ok?
Here's some brief footage from my little jaunt out on Friday.

Chaps,
I've got a day off work this coming Sunday, so if any bike meets are definately happening I would be very interested. I'm closest to One Tree Hill, but have got a bike rack so can go anywhere within reason. Ideally it would be good to meet up with some riders who know the trails, as I don't know them having ridden mainly on road.
Cheers all 8)0 -
Do you park at the car park behind the harvester pub, westerley heights?
:?0 -
