I'll be over in Thorndon tomorrow (Sat) about 8:30 to 11:30, so if anyone wants to tag along your welcome.

Decided to measure an oak tree in the Long Plantation the other day, this is the wood that's between the A128 and the golf course just before Thorndon Hall

Turns out that it's about 550 years old, sung happy birthday to it. Stood there contemplating that this was an established tree when Henry VIII was born, very humbling.

Many apologies if this has been asked a dozen times before. But...

Does anyone have a map / directions / GPS points etc for Thorndon ? A few of us are hoping to come over on Easter Monday for an early morning ride and having never been to your side of Essex before I'm hoping someone can help..

None of the maps show more than a small portion of the trails.

As for gps never needed it as I've been riding there for quite a few years.

I could be riding over there on Monday, so if you need a guide just let me know what time.

Is there any interest in doing some more evening rides?
Same kind of format as last year. Bridleways, a little bit of single then the pub?
We could do a ride over to Thorndon it does not take long to get there from the reserve.
Let me know what you all think and i will put some dates together. It will be Mondays again unless loads of people can't do that evening.

    Hi Jonathan,

Yes for Thorndon, I've been over there photographing quite a lot over the past few weeks in the evening.

It's been very quiet and invigorating.

I might even venture out to your neck of the woods.

Hi, new to this site. Was wondering if a regular ride is still going and if so where, when and what time? Im based down in southend and looking for a weekend ride and possibly an evening ride in the week.

    Cheers all

I ride Thorndon 3 times per week, Saturday and a couple of days in the week plus some Sundays.

I've been riding over there off and on for 46 years, usually ride for 2-3 hours and start anything from 6am to 6pm.

So if anyone wants to trundle around with me they are welcome.

Hi Karl it's on the A127 and the southern end of it is at the Halfway House near Brentwood, the car park is off the A128 on the Brentwood side.

As for fitness you won't know until you come for a ride, rides always stop at regular intervals for everyone to catch up.

Thanks I know where you mean now, and its only down the road to me which is great. Do you happen to have a postcode of gps code for the car park, or a link to google maps with its location?

I am up for coming out at the weekend for a ride, can do saturday or sunday. What times will people be out?

    Cheers for the help everyone.

    Here is a map of Thorndon http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/vip8/ecc/ECCW ... elOid=null

I'm over there on Saturday, I usually arrive at the South car park around 9am. I ride from where I live down through North Thorndon to South.

Hi thanks for the reply, I will try to make it this saturday if I can. I will be in the car park closest to the halfway house just before 9, I drive a red fiesta and have a white canyon bike.

    Cheers

Sorry for the delay folks, my mum died a month ago and I have been staying with dad for a while.
I am doing lots running and biking events though the summer to raise money for various cancer charities so please use the online sponsorship form to make a donation. Sorry for the shameless plug. www.justgiving.com/jonathanwisbey

    Hi Muddylegs,
Sorry to read about your Mum. It's good that you are doing something positive in her memory and to help others.

    Hi Jonathan,

    Sorry for your loss.

I can't make Tuesdays due to family commitments, but am free weekends as always if you fancy a blat.

We're alsogoing to try and resurrect the monthly 'big one' (basically a trip to somewhere like Swinley or Aston Hill for a few hours one weekend a month) if you ever fancy coming along.

    BJB

PS - donation also made - good luck

You are probably best going to warley gap, which is on the other side of thorndon.
Parking (free) can be found on the Izumi restaurant side ( you can google Izumi to get the address).

    Muddylegs,
I'm not sure if trail-clearing is done on a rota or an as-and-when basis, but Marks Hill is getting very narrow (particularly on the 'up') and the path between the 3 steps and the B1007 needs a little trim too.
If you could sort those out before tomorrow night, that'd be great!
