Well crest is lighter, stiffer and a fraction wider so you have more volume so less need for higher pressures, important if you go tubeless.

But it's been out for 6 months now so i should imagine it'll be a crest, but id phone em up before ordering first. ;)

So you think stans rims aren't much cop then?

    Hmmmmmmmm

I think i'll still go for it, im very curious about their rims anyway.

Oh btw im in the middle of sorting my phone pac code out, three have a vice like grip as it's a damn good number.

So if you get no response that's why.
    :wink::wink:

Do you think roj will want a deposit?

  • just tell three, youve had enough of waiting for it and want to cancel your contract unless they give you the pac code over the phone - which they can do!! i bet you get it then!!!

you'll be alright i guess as your a mate of mine, but a deposit show's good willing as such!

your best bet will be to ring hope re- your pro2/4.1 rim, see what they suggest, they may say for a set fee they'll re-rim it for you! that way, problem solved!!!

stans are fine, just So much hype about them yet tyhey are a basic rim as such, you'll prolly have no issues with them though!

Well i've got it now, guy was using every excuse in the book, he was quite aggressive until he realised he was pushing his luck.

A re rim could be just as costly, besides im a tart and love straight pulled spokes.

    Ah nice one. ;)

I know they can be had for around the £30 mark, i'll give it a quick raincheck for now as im unsure how the car will pass the mot, so tempted to splurge but i dunno.....

Hmm, i'll give you a shout closer to the time, probably nip in a day you're there.

Oh imeant to say, i rode the same areas yesterday, lo and behold i rode them no problem, a case of overdoing it and burning the candle both ends, feel much better now i've found the problem.

Oh and i will be grabbing a garmin edge 705 at some point, that little event has inspired me to take it further, i really enjoyed the whole wondering around aimlessly more enjoyable than i expected.

    Good site btw.

Also worth looking at www.everytrail.com and www.bikehike.co.uk

Best price I've seen the 705 is www.handtec.co.uk

If you're not bothered about the fitness stuff I hear the Memory Map Adventurer 2800 is pretty good.

Fitness stuff, nah i have a hrm and cadence, maybe if i had a road bike.

Thanks, gives me another option, i'll do some sniffing about see if i like it, it'll be a while as i need bits for the bike, the wheels i have are heavy, fine for general riding but for events id rather have a better pair tbh.

Oh i see it's os map style rather than sat nav, hmm that's nice im well versed in reading os maps anyway so that's ideal, means i can pick up nearby points on the trails.

Not bad, having more fun on the bike and changing routes often to stave off boredom.

Gears are playing silly buggers, so got a short run of nokon cable, for some odd reason my liner has gone straight despite my leaving plenty of length for it not to do that.

Fraid not, just got back from fitting a new cable, chuff all difference the shifter is shagged, the gears seem to come back randomly.

I have about 7-8 gears on the back, the top 2-3 i'll have to do without for now, too much going on at present as it's insurance month.

Oh and now the bearings in my wheels are fussing to boot, they're cup and cone so im hoping all they need is a regrease.

Anyway i'll order some new bearings on my hope xc wheel, bearings in that don't feel too brilliant, i have a feeling i'll need that wheel sooner or later.

  • ooooh, xtr death = pricey!!!
may be resurectable though, they are relatively simple inside so may be that it needs a strip down, degreaser soak, dry, lube and put back together??

cup and cone are simple to do, just make sure you have the correct cone spanners! pack em full of good grease and away you go!

I don't have cone spanners but i have plenty of regular ones so i'll probably be fine.

Death of xtr yeah pita, this isn't the first xtr shifter i've had fail on me this time i'll wait to see what the 010 offerings are like, if they feel flimsy then i'll head for xt, much cheaper tbh.

I have four bearings coming for the hope hub, which i've stripped before so it's not the end of the world just yet, just a royal pita time for it to have happened.

Oh and i've already cleaned and degreased the shifter, even fixed a sping that wasn't sitting right.

It's the random nature that i find unusual, im hoping it's just a bit of grit that needs to work it's way out, time will tell.

  • normal spanners are too thick fella! measure the sizes of the cones (prolly something like 15mm and 17mm,) as i have a couple can let you borrow,

tbh matey, i'd most likely go for Xt anyways, its only a slightly lesser weight and small difference in shifting for a Lot more coin! (10 sp when it launchs will be effectively the same prices as 9's so if your considering a cassette too then ideal time to change!)

when you get your bearings matey, use a Tiny hobby screwdriver to pop the rubberseals off and pack them Full of grease, they all come greased but its marginal! got a bag of ten for mine (some spares) cracked them all open and greased them up popped the seals back on, spot on!!! also remember to push/press them in rather than hammer them as that'll lead to premature wear!
have a long threaded bar nuts and washers you can borrow too if needs be!

Well all is not lost tim, i found my unused deore shifter so i'll throw that one if this one doesn't wort itself out.

Can you order us a tool, it's dirt cheap so no deposit required id imagine.

It's a shimano tl fh-10 it's a splined freehub tool, tricky to get hold of so im trying official channels first.

    http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/tool ... l-fh10.JPG

Basically like that, id rather have the ool for obvious reasons. ;)

    Cheers.

There is a spline in the middle of my hub, apparently you need a splined tool to go inside so you can remove the freehub body.

Hang fire on the order for now, i'll see what develops.

I thought you removed a Shimano freehub using an 11mm allen key.

IIRC you normally get an 8mm-11mm step up with a new freehub ('cause 11mm keys are very hard to come by).

  • 10/11/12mm mark, depends on the hub body,
not played with hope ones but would assume they are much the same,

    park do 10,11,12mm keys,

Hope are easier, just a bolted axle really.

No this is a formula hub, shimano body so inside is a splined nut, can't find a tool for it that's the problem.

Apparently it's an old 6/7/8 speed dura ace design, after that they moved onto hex keys.

have a nose, chances are its an 11mm allen, would haver thought if any problems from the drive side then gently knock out the non drive side bearing race (guessing on your alex wheels??) and slide in your allen that side, i've a socket attachment 11 and 12mm, although one's a sump plug key fot for the fiat! but is a 12mm allen head!! 11mm adapter came with my spare formula freehub body! (is a cup and cone one too!)

Do you have a long reach allen key, mine only go to 10mm as always, i think it's not splined rather like the inside of a ring spanner so a hex should indeed work fine, i think it's 12mm my 10mm seemed way off, if it was 1mm it would have been a close fit id imagine.

As for the bearing race, im assuming that's what the bearings sit on, can you flush them out safely?

And yeah it's my alex wheels.

My nopes btw are marginally buckled, a quick fix plus they have newish pawls and i have a full set of bearing for a fiver ready to go in.

The axle should be fine, may want a bit of cleaning id imagine.

I've got some fancy prolink grease for the bearings, it feels very slippery so should work a treat id imagine.

The hope works fine so i'll leave it go till i sort the alex out first.

  • yeah matey, the beaing cup is easily tapped out, just drop a long punch through from the drive side and gently tap it out, have a small 12mm but a long extension for it as have done it on my old hub a few times!

    all grease is slippy!

Very nice but where's the carbon. ;)

I don't think they do a rapidrise in carbon, which is a shame as i prefer it.

Funnily enough i still have an old xtr rapidrise mech, still in pretty decent nick.
