i can see your point though matey! road miles woudl almost certainly help with the fitness and speed! although, please dont go for one of those super streamline helmets! (or we'll make you wear it on the next ride!;))

could save grace and get another wheelset with some slicks on though!!;)

So, entering the Newnam (sp?) 90km and Soggy Bottom races plus a triathlon just to pootle along at the back then?!

To be honest, I've been eyeing up the Spesh Tricross bike as I'm thinking about the odd tri and/or adventure race.

Anyone up for the Lusty Glaze race? 20km MTB then 10Km trail run (luckily I'm a bit better at running than MTBing   ) with a few little events (surf ski paddle, abseil, river crossing, etc) chucked in the middle. Need teams of three and it's on the 4th May.

Mark certainly wins the "keenest about riding but talks least about kit" competition - a fine pair of attributes in my book. 8)

I was going to ask about the Lusty Glaze race. Sounds very interesting.

That was until you said you are better at running than MTB - and you are one of the faster MTB'ers!

Mark - well as it's in teams, I reckon it would be a good laugh - you'd be good at it and I have a cousin (lives in Fraddon) who is a decent runner and MTBer and is also keen- could be fun - I think!

Let me know if it sounds any good to you - it's on:

Only vaguely quick on ascents - still a quivering jessie on downhills

Not at all! Emailed my cousin to see if he's still keen.

If he is, I'll let you know - as there are a load of things to do on the way, I reckon flat out speed wouldn't be the main factor - plus we've never entered so we haven't set a time - so no chance of being "slowed down" anyway!

Will let you know what he says at the pub on Friday.

Cousin is a quick runner and a mad MTBer but possibly not all that quick on a bike over a distance as far as I know. So I reckon we'd all be pretty even overall.

Timmo, the fire's are a good all round tyre, not weak in any department unless it gets silly muddy but at that point you'd need mud tyres to grip anyway.

Bushings and spare dropout have been ordered and will be sent off tomorrow, hopefully the rear shock sould arrive tomorrow.

Im dying to test the thing.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Why do people buy so many things mail order that have little price difference compared to local shops?

If you ask, many will pricematch or negotiate on price.

Get a good relationship with a local shop & they'll help you out, give you tips on how to do things and keep on giving you decent prices.

For example - I nearly always use Certini.
They have pricematched nearly everything I have bought.
I had a new cassette fitted free
I am looking to buy a new rear wheel (it's just as cheap as getting everything swapped onto a new hub). For prices I was told they were the same as Merlin.
My neighbour was shown how to strip & service his BB.

My problem came when I started looking for a road bike. I shortlisted 3.
Bianchi - 'cause it's Italian & looks the business - decsion from the heart
Ribble - 'cause it's hand assembled to the spec I want - logical decsion
Specialized Allez - 'cause I own a spec MTB, shop is local & it always does well it tests - educated decsion.
Needless to say the relationship, service & prices I get already, it means that I will be looking in Certini first and I can't imagine not ending up with a Spec / Scott / Giant.

To me, they ain't exactly local, but they are worth it.

Mark - that is a serious mission to Certini from yours but sounds good.
I find CM in Truro a little bit variable depending on who you deal with.

I only order on-line if there is a massive price difference and where service isn't important.
However I'm in CM just about every weekend!

I'm not saying use Certini - that's just who I use. They are probably a little too far away for most, but using them as an example shows the sort of service that is available out there.

What I am saying is - get a good relationship with a local shop & they will be very helpful & will normally discount.

If you don't get the service (eg Shane with his rear mech), use a different shop.

Mark - true enough and I wish Certini was a bit nearer and I've heard nothing but praise for them from a number of people.

But CM are very good in general - couple of slight hiccups but only if you end up being served by a certain staff member who is a bit lacking in knowledge - the rest are good.

The shop that Shane went to has given me cr4p service twice too - So to be avoided. Shame as it's location is quite handy.

  • mark, i know what your saying matey, i will often use ricci (bikechain) but as matt said it often depends who you deal with!
being of a more limited fundage to me saving a few quid here and ther is important, and if i can save some money i will, hence looking on ebay for tyres, last time i was in bikechain i couldnt see any panaracer tyre's which are what i have at the mo and also whta i keep hearing good things of (fire xc's)
in the past i have bought mostof my kit from there, infact the only things on my bike that didnt come from there are the cassette and chain (changed over when the chain went but previous one was from there) bar end's (although the ones that were on there before came from there) stem (again previous one was from there) and the wheels and tyres, asll the rest of the chainset, seat post, saddle, bars, shifters, brakes and cables all came from there! and i get a lot of advice from there when i need it, my wife's bike and all its kit came from bikechain, and before i started playing aorund wiht the bike's all the servicing etc woudl be done there and all because i used to get on very well with ricci (due to cleaning his cars for him!) - still do, and james who used to work there (still on the website as its a little out of date) and also olly his son, but the current staff arnt half as helpful as the old peeps!
but you have to admit, if yo ucan get a bargain of the net when why not! especially if your getting something delivered in apair for less than your local shop can do one for!

if i didnt like and enjoy playing and fixing the bikes as much as i do then no doubt i wold still use bikechain a lot more than i do! but i really do enjoy getting my hands dirty and knowing that i built the bike up saving myslef a lot of money and gaining knowledge, even if i had an endless supply of ready cash i would prolly still do the same!

also one last point, if you cant necessarily get out to your bike shop all the time in my case sue to looking after the littlun all day and not having my car on the road at the mo then you simply can't beat the service from places like Chain reaction!
    Timmo.

    Mark,

I'm hoping to make the Dartmoor ride.

I had a big off about 2 or 3 weeks ago and injured my ribs so I have not been riding much (it was not comfortable when we did the St. Day/Poldice run) . I'm hoping everything will be OK for Sunday, I'll confirm I'm going by Friday.

Also I can't make the Pub meeting Friday........ Have a good one

In this case we are talking about a few bearings and possibly cups.

Is it really worth saving a £ or 2?

Yep, if you can't get out of the house, then mail order is the only answer.

If the deal you can get mail order is much better than local, then fine. But ask at your LBS before ordering.
At least this way your LBS is aware of the business they are losing and might reconsider the sale next time.

I'm taking my van so I'll have room for 1 or 2 whole bikes or 3 to 4 bikes if you want to take the wheels off.

Where to in Dartmoor are we meeting?
