  • Thank you Poulsy, spot on! Although I took the pics as I was seeking advice on what colour bar tape, I think it's easier to advise if you've got pics of what you're trying to advise on.

Plus it was a chance to show it off a bit

I only had to sell my utterly gorgoues Indy Fab mountain bike and carbon Bianchi to pay for it. But I'm extremely happy with the result and can't wait for the pedals to arrive :D

thanks alot LardLover.. my missus just caught me jerking off to pictures of your bike...

Just kidding... Very nice bike indeed.. I do hope you do the bike justice and race it like you stole it.. thats if you race?

It looks like it wants to be thrashed everywhere!!

I won't be racing this year, maybe a couple of Sportivs. I come from a mountain biking background, but I've seen the light :D . I'll need to get some miles in to build a base level of fitmness as I haven't been out in weeks, but rest assured, I'll be thrashing the tits off it every time I get my leg over

Lard - that is a simply stunning bike and no mistake. However, don't even think of putting anything other than black bar tape on it. Any other colour (like blue, for instance) would cheapen it, I reckon. Keep it classy... ;)
  • Thank you softlad. 8)
  • LardLover that is a gorgeous bike.

It might not be the latest Carbon Fibre, Dura Ace, Super Duper whatever, but I'm pleased with it (until I can afford a SuperSix Liquigas).

    Good job Pedro.

I've also got an SCR2 and was wondering what I could do to pimp it up a bit. It is my first ever roadbike and I will keep it until it falls to bits, but mind if I copy a few of your ideas?

I think the white bar tape works well, but not sure about the turquoise pedals 8)

Have the Shimano wheels made much difference? Apparently the stock wheels that come with the SCR are quite heavy. And how clean is that cassette, is that really the original?

Your other pics are well cool.

That madone is a 'riot' of colour. I'm not so sure that red and yellow go together in those quantities but I guess that's a matter of personal taste..however where did you get red stem spacers...does anyone want to draw attention to the spacers under their stem  ?
  • Carl_P, thanks mate. Feel free to copy away. It would be a compliment.

The bar tape is actually light blue. I got mine from Probikekit for less than a fiver. The wheels were £80 delivered from Merlincycles. The light blue Michelin Lithion tyres would look even cooler than the Oriums, and would perform better too. I might go for them next time.

The wheels are good value for the money. They are slightly more responsive than the Alexrims (which are still going strong), but don't expect them to transorm the bike. I bought a new cassette so I could quickly change between wheelsets (I put the shiny one on the new wheels). I'll use the Alexrims when it's raining.

    Cheers
    Pedro

PS: Total weight saved (including tyres & tubes) over the original wheels is 424g. Not a great deal. You could save more with better tyres though.

  • My new Enigma. It was ordered as an Excel but it has Etape logos.
I picked it up from Paul Hewitt on Friday. I've done ~40 miles on it so far and I'm very, very pleased.
Spec is:- Veloce shifters, XT front and rear mechs, Rigida Sputniks with 32C Marathons, XT rear hub, SON front, BB7 calipers and 203mm discs, Topeak Tourist rear carrier.

    Fantastic Chocolatebike

What fork have you got? Those of us with Disc brakes on road bikes usually have a problem sourcing a suitable fork

    I thought the BB7s came with 160mm calipers-is that a special spec?

  • Thanks Ken.
The fork is an Enigma product- they have it on their web-site (I think). It's Ti.
I can't rate the ride/handling qualities yet because I'm still getting used to the bike.
The discs are 203mm. BB7s come with a choice of rotor sizes. These are the biggest and I think they're intended for tandems. They need an adaptor to move the caliper into the correct place.
I went for them because I'd read a few stories about discs warping on long downhills but I think that was due to poor technique ie braking continously instead of plummeting down and anchoring on hard for corners.
Paul Hewitt actually reckoned that bigger discs are better because they help distribute the braking torque better.
I just know that they are amazingly effective  :D

    Yup, discs are really brilliant

are they 08 or 09 BB7's and is there actually a difference? (Avid say there is, on their website, but it's not clear what it is-I'm expecting future generations of discs for road bikes to be lighter)

as you're using XT mechs, does that mean you're on Shimano 8speed for the cassette, or have you gone the Jtech route?

Let us know when you have ridden it some more-what the ride is like

The ride of my Airborne CD is really springy, quite sublime, and I'm sure the good people at Enigma have done special things too

I assume that they're '08 components because Hewitts got the equipment in and then waited and waited for the frame to arrive.
It's a 9 speed rear cassette. Dunno if there's something clever between the shifters and the derailleurs- I just assumed that they were compatible. The reason for the Campag shifters is to make it easier to fit a bar bag- the cables are out of the way. The jury is out on the Campags. It's my first time with anything other than Shimano. I like the shifting but the shape of the hoods doesn't make me feel too confident at the moment.

First impressions of riding the bike are that it really soaks up road buzz but it also seems to be very rigid when I'm out of the saddle.

I ordered an extra set of wheels today. I'm going to put knobblier tires on them. Half of my riding seems to be on tarmac and half on tracks/trails. Another benefit of discs is how easy it is to change the wheels.

Yes it does, but your bike seems to have had more face lifts than Micky Rourke. It's always looked great in my opinion.

I seem to recall on one of your posts you are 5ft 8ish, so are you actually riding it with that set up? You must be well stretched out.

Finished building it now. Changed back to the Campag Record calipers as I was having a right faff on trying to set up the Zero Gravity's with the Planet X wheels

Fizik dual bar tape (black and silver) is very nice, would recommend

Also, a little "detail" in the Chris King headset spacers, that I'm not entirely sure about now that they're on, but they match the "detail" on the wheels
