  • Just finished a new bike for my girlfriend, a Trek 1.2 WSD frame that I have made into an audax style bike for her, this is her first road bike, she has been using her old ATB until now for up to 100 miles, after that ride she agreed that she would like to join me riding from Bordeaux to Barcelona, I may have not highlighted the part about the Pyrenees being in between the two when trying to convince her to go mind you, so decided to treat her to a bike, hoping that it will help her to get over them; without hitting me! Most of the spec' was based on my own Van Nicholas Yukon

808_CTC_LOUISA_01_1.jpg Trek 1.2 WSD 47cm frame with Mavic Kysrium Equipe wheels

808_CTC_LOUISA_03_1.jpg TA Carmina 165mm 26-36-46, this gives roughly 24" to 95" gear ratios with 13-29 cassette

808_CTC_LOUISA_04_2.jpgCampagnolo Record Red label Ergo, indulged here as personally I prefer the non QS front shifting and clunkier gear change.

808_CTC_LOUISA_06_1.jpg Campagnolo Comp triple mech with 13-29 cassette

808_CTC_LOUISA_07_1.jpg Campagnolo Comp Front mech, dsigned for larger rings, as you can see the outer plate does not follow the chain ring line, but it still works well enough.

808_CTC_LOUISA_08_1.jpg Short depth bars, Shimano R650 57mm brakes

    808_CTC_LOUISA_09_1.jpg Cateye Strada Wireless computer

As for Louisa she thought it looked lovely, although when I started to tell her the thought that went into the equipment choices I could see her eyes glazing over

With all the gear on that, you weren't tempted to get a posher frame?

It looks lovely, anyway. What a great boyfriend.

That is indeed a possible option at some stage, I wanted to see how she took to that style of bike first, the equipment upgrades will then transfer to a better frame in the future.

I did not intend on upgrading as much as I did, the Record levers were indeed an indulgence, initially I used Centaur levers but confess I much preferred the non QS indexed shifting on the chain set and the more positive click that I could only get with Record!

Funny how events influence things sometimes, a family member just before I built it had a healthcare which for me kind of put things in perspective and I just thought oh well it’s only money, I seldom splash out on anything but today I will!

Poor girl! You could at least have given her a Specialized Ruby or something similar

She wanted mudguards, if she likes this style of bike and Audax style riding will probably have either a Cliff Shrubb or a Titanium Custom made for her.

Is the front mech band on adaptor one of those that is riveted to the frame or a separate adaptor? (I need one to fit a braze on mech!)
  • I used an Adapter, your local bike shop should be able to get them easy enough as they are distributed bywww.fisheroutdoor.co.uk

Why the long cage on the derailleur? Is it a triple chainring?

Nope...compact. Just happened to have the derailleur lying around :)

Ah, cost cutting - in which case it's perfectly understandable! :D

One for the 'future upgrades' list though eh?!

Love the Look frames by the way - if I hadn't of found the bargain Ti frame I got then I'd of seriously considered one myself. Great basis for slow & steady upgrades, good choice! 8)

I'm lovin the stem and seat post Bill57. What are they made of, and where did you get them?
    Cheers

    Andy,

The stem, bars and seatpost are from the Shimano Pro PLT range, in their "Ice-Grey" finish. (Think Ultegra SL). Bars have the same finish (it's just the light), and are available in Anatomic or Classic (mine) shape. Not heavy, not expensive and easy to find - SJS Cycles.

Love the bike bill57 and as said bars stem and seat post look sweet, but one question, why not Ultegra SL groupset? I bet it would look even more of a killer bike.

I had to nose up while I was re-breaking in my riding position on the Brooks.
As a result of this photo I have dropped it down again now. Thanks for the reminder.

Thought I would throw up a quick pic seen as I had just cleaned it. Not a new new build but had it for 8 months or so.

    TonyW43;

You're asking a lot of your camera there. Shooting with a sunlit window as a backdrop it's going to struggle to correctly expose the bike. You'll get a much better photo shooting outside a slightly overcast day

I guess your talking about the height of the seatpost. I fall directly between 58cm and 60cm frame size. The 58cm was more comfortable for my riding style and I have been riding that size for a few years.
