We had planned the hill climb to be a fairly casual event, but we were advised that any kind of timed riding needs to follow proper procedures otherwise we would be liable if anything going wrong.

    Sorry for any disappointment folks...

Thanks for your offer of help David. It would be good to have a chat about how to go about things.

Mike: The Sunday run is going ahead as normal - meet at the Cross for 9.00 am

  • I don't think we need to inform the police if it is a club-intern, informal event. It's not different from a club run. It takes place on public roads and on road-legal bikes. Not need to involve the police.

The difference is it would have been a timed event with people racing against each other. Its a grey area but we were informed that if anything went wrong, a car hitting a rider for instance, it gets problematic if it's seen that the cyclists were racing without meeting all the safety criteria.

We are affiliated to the RTTC in England through the National Clarion and the RTTC have strict rules that need to be adhered to if we want to meet the criteria of our insurance.

I'll need to do more research but once we affiliate to the SCU it should make it easier to promote this kind of event, in the same way the ERC organise their weekly club 10.

  • As I see it, this is not an official race. It's a bunch of cyclists cycling up a hill as fast as possible. I obviously agree that we have to make sure health and safety issues are addressed but I can't see why the police has to be informed if the route has been risk-assessed.

But I am happy to go with your advice if you feel that doing the hill climb could get us into trouble.

    Cheers

You're right EC, I don't think we have to tell the police we are doing a race, that's normally done as a courtesy. The route hasn't been risk assessed, and we don't have the warning triangles etc.

Its not my advice by the way, I'm no expert! I asked a number of people who had organised races in Scotland, the general view was we could 'get away' with doing the race because it was a small event. But when I asked the advice of the Clarion national secretary and another member who organises races in England they strongly advised getting all the right procedures in place before doing any kind of event.

    Guys,

Can I suggest that we start at 8.30am on Saturday due to failing light and bad weather in the mornings now.
OS65 can you e mail all the memebers and we can start at 8.30am this Saturday from the KWM which will allow people to cycle over from various locations in the light.

    Dave,

Can you copy the cycling DVD's? If so I would be interested in buying a copy !!
Just to let you know that I am starting the group turbo sessions in my garage this coming Tuesday if you are interested?

    Hey Bill
I was thinking even 9.00am might be better, 8.30 last year meant guys like Fathead were starting out in the dark...

Also we've been saying all year (on posters etc) that we'll change the time when the clocks go back which is 26th October - shouldn't we stick with that?

I won't be out on Saturday but will be on the Sunday run - see you there.

I'd have to finish. Who else would push you up the hill otherwise? :D
  • I am for the 26th to give it some consistency.

    EC
  • EC

Agree with the consistency argument but when the clocks change we actually get a whole load more light and 8am becomes (briefly) realistic again for the satellite members like myself.

Was hoping to get out tomorrow but it looks like work might have the final say in that.

  • Good point re. the extra hour in the morning, Malcolm. Forgot about that.

  • Can I just confirm that it is 08.30 tomorrow as opposed to 8? An extra half hour's sleep is always welcome!

Just got back after joining Stevie and Andy on their last few miles. I went around the alps a few times, 22 miles, after missing the start due to running a relative to the airport at 4.30am this morning, last minute dot com !!!
Thanks for waking me up on the way past with the group shout, I will get you all back at the turbo session on Tuesday.

Sorry I could not make this weekends runs. I got out for 56 miles yesterday later on in the morning but got in from work this morning at 0400hrs.

My days off this week are Monday and Tuesday if anyone is interested in putting in some miles. I would prefer to leave before 1000hrs if that suits anyone and would be happy to drive to the meeting point if it is further afield.

    Hope todays run went well.

Don't suppose anyone has some Shimano 8 speed STI's lying at the back of the shed that they're looking to punt?

Scratch that! I just ordered some new 9 speed Soras from Ribble.

9 SPEED!! The very thought of that amount of gears makes me nervous :o:o

bill's inaugral turbo night was a resounding success so thanks to bill for providing the space and the music....as was said, an hour and a bit went very quickly in good company and I look forward to this becoming a fixture in all our winter training....the structure of the session was spot on bill 8)

Hi Sadiq, any chance of letting me know how you structure these sessions?

I have a Tacx on order from Ribble and am going to start doing my own weekly sessions at home but haven't used a turbo before so don't just want to spin aimlessly.

    Thanks,

    Grant
