Hey folks
I won't be out on Saturday but will be on Sunday...
OS 650 -
Gents
Looking at the wind, I'd need to set off now if I wanted to make it to the KWM for 8. Looks like a spin class for me tomorrow morning.
Hope those brave souls venturing out enjoy it.================================

If it's too bad (as in dangerous wind speeds) I may change my mind. But if it's only rain, I'll be there.0

Andy, thanks for your advice regarding my jacket. It has now been packaged and hand delivered to the Fabrics division of Gore in Livingston where it was passed over to a very helpful lady called Jackie Brown.
She has agreed to test the jacket immediately and phone me on Monday with the result as she is ware that I have only one change of clothes and cant leave the house without it. Only joking!
I have set my alarm for 0600hrs Saturday as I will need to leave at 0630hrs. I will be there on Sunday and will make every effort to be there for Saturday as well. If i'm not there for 8 then please don't wait. How many miles are you intending to do on Saturday as I have never been on Satuday.
Regards David0 -
Hey David
Saturday is usually about 25-40 miles, I'm not going out but you could get the other riders to head in a direction that is better for you.
Tomorrow (Sat 25th) is the last ride of the year at 8.00am. From Saturday 1st Nov the ride will start at 9.00am for the rest of the winter.
...And remember the clocks go back on Sunday!
OS 650 -
Thanks for that Matt. I would suggest a different direction but can't guarantee being out on Saturday. I am actually looking forward trying to get up the hill to the KWM from Preston Road. My car was tired just trying to get up.
See you on Sunday.
Thanks David.
PS. I have emailed Bill with my order for new kit so I can fly than flag, albeit slowly.0 -
I'm hoping to be out on Saturday too but Sunday's a work day unfortunately.
The forecast is not good wind-wise with gales or severe gales tomorrow, and it's boiling up that way at the moment. Nothing unusual there given the last week or so.

A story about the Tour de Trossachs appears in this week's West Lothian Courier.

shhhhh, I've disguised the trophy as a vase
Were there any 'dedicated' riders out today?
It looked pretty awful weather from underneath my duvet.

Hi Matt, Mark, Tobias, Jim and I were out today. Went along back roads towards Edinburgh. I clocked up 53 miles. Winds very strong but I think I can say everyone enjoyed the run today."Character Building". FIrst time up Preston road. Pitch black but thorougly enjoyed it. Will be training more often up that hill. Don't really have hills that length in my neck of the woods.
Not feeling great at the moment so will give Sunday run a miss this week.
Have a safe run out on Sunday
Regards David0 -
Is that you just home David?
The "Hardcore Four" went out to South Queensferry via Bangour fishery, West Binny and Kirkliston and back through the Hopetoun Estate (including a bit of cyclocross and avoiding a collision with the Earl's Range Rover), Abercorn and Threemiletown. We found some sheltered roads but the B9080 back to Linlithgow was pretty bad with the wind either in your face or blowing you across the road.
It was about 28 miles from the KWM and back to Lithgae, and according to my Aldi cheapo computer, an average speed of 13mph which I don't think is too bad given the force 10 we had to contend with. In fact the average might well have been higher as the 13 includes my slow ascent of Preston Road to get to the meeting point.
All in all, a very enjoyable run in terrible conditions. All we need now is the snow and ice.0 -
I am days off this Thursday and Friday and would like to put in a couple of 40-50 mile runs and take in Preston Road again and possibly head towards Lanark as that's roads I've not been on yet. Early morning start would be preferred.
I will also be going out on Tuesday morning before back shift if anyone wants to come along.
If anyone is interested in going out please post reply.
Cheers David0 -

Hi guys, opted for a solo ride yesterday morning but ended up passing the Sunday ride in Denny!
They were heading up into the Carron Valley (and into the wind!) so I bade them farewell as I didn't fancy the climb on my fixed gear as the way home for me thereafter would be either over Tak or Crow Road and continued on my way to Falkirk and on to Linlithgow Bridge.
Going well to Linlithgow - average speed 17mph for 25 miles then turned off at the Avonbridge road up past Muiravonside park and realised why I'd been managing 17mph comfortably on my own up to that point!!
What a heck of a wind - decided to climb up to High Limerigg then on to the wind turbines at Longriggend - that's when the hail started
Made it home with feet like lumps of ice (nice when they start to warm up in the bath NOT!!)
Overall 47 miles at average speed of 14.2mph (which included some flat stretches at 7 or 8 mph into the wind!)
Never ridden in a wind like that - glad I skipped the Braveheart ride on Saturday although apparently there were still plenty of nutters who did it.
Should have just went up the Carron Valley after all!!0 -
Hey Grant
Good to see you (briefly!) yesterday. You would have been too intimidating for the sunday run wearing those SHORTS! in hail!
We did about 55 miles at 15mph - you would have been fine, although my knees nearly popped trying to keep up with the brintey's on my fixed when we started to descend - 31mph is all my knees can take!
OS 650 -
Ah the shorts! They're on their last legs now - seen a fair bit of action over the years!
Disappointed the new kit won't have a 'baggy' option Will need to conform from now on
Where did you guys end up after heading up the Valley?0 -
We headed up the carron valley but turned back before fintry to get home by 1pm... no cafe stop this time.
OS 650 -

Hi OS65
How many turned up on Sunday? Any new riders?
EC0 -
8 of us headed off to Fintry via Falkirk, Denny and the Carron Valley. Allan, Matt, Mike (on his new Winter Ribble he bought for about 50p), Simon, Bob, Lesley, Neil (on a lvely new roubaix), and new guy Steve kept a steady pace in the wind, Allan, Lesley and Bob took a shorter route 'cos they needed to get back.
Steve is a TTer based in Linlithgow but rides for Sandy Wallace cycles.....
Carron Valley was beautiful in the sunshine. Trouble is you have to ride through less appealing areas to get there. Over the bridge to Fife has quieter roads earlier on, we should maybe try out to Forth sometime too.
OS 650 -
Not bad for a windy day. Mind you, the real cyclists came out on Saturday0
-
Saturday was a no show for me due to combined weight of bike and rider being 70kg. I would have ended up in Fife without touching the tarmac if I had came out :P

Now the rest of us know who the club Psychos are! :shock:0 -
Bill,
You certainly would have on yer Cervelo and the Zipps.
Time to get your winter bike out like the rest of it (combined weight of bike and rider = 100kg). Then you'd be safe even in the strongest of winds.
Psychos??? WHAT PSYCHOS???

... oh my God. It's the voices again. Telling me to go out cycing in the rain and wind.
Btw, Grant, the Fortius software is running fine on my old laptop. Perhaps you should have ordered one after all.
EC0 -
Ah well Tobias - I'll need to put it on my 2009 wish list!
I have ordered the Alpine Classic DVD for the Satori and I know it's probably a poor compromise but I'll give it a bash.
It tells you on screen what resistance to set the trainer to but that's about it.
Better than nowt I suppose! If that doesn't work I'll just need to stick on some Metallica and give it wahoo!0 -
well done everyone for getting out in junk weather at the weekend. i worked saturday, had a lie in sunday then went out for a couple of hours heading to carnwath and back via the lang wang.
PRESIDENT'S RUN
I am suggesting we do a West Lothian Clarion president's run 2008 which will take place on a Sunday in November. This is likely to be similar to normal sunday runs with noone left behind although we should be aiming to head somewhere 'nice and scenic' with a teastop. I am open to offers as to how we should schedule this but will set the ball rolling with a couple of suggestions. I am open to the idea of us maybe meeting up somewhere not too far a drive for a nice rural run. A suggestion:
a) Loch Tay. This would be a loop taking in the Glen Quaich climb from both sides and the Ben Lawyers climb. If we do the full loop starting in Crieff (1hrs drive) it would be circa 70miles in length although we can ammend this depending on how others feel. Weather would need to be 'ok' for this ride. This would be a great run for those who have not cycled in this amazing area. While the Glen Quaich climb is steep (compact or triple gearing for 'novices' ) I think less experienced riders would do ok sitting in behind more experienced riders.
If we want to do an out and back from the Bathgate Alps how about:
b) Tweed Valley. A run through Forth, Carnwath and Bigger to a teastop in Broughton before heading back more or less on the same route.
Any more suggestions?
Dates Sunday Novemer 16th, 23rd or 30th - how are these with folk?0
