    Captain Phillips

The film is based on a true story about the American ship, Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009 by Somalian pirates.

The main actor is Tom Hanks who is the Captain of the ship, brilliant acting from Hanks. I enjoyed this film about modern day piracy on the high seas.

What the pirates did was wrong and it was for the money but you also get to know a bit about why they were doing it.

Yeah, fantastic film. The climactic scene with the snipers was an incredible piece of cinema and brilliantly acted by Hanks.

  • Just been to see Conclave at the local cinema - excellent film, well paced and acted and very close to the book from what I remember. Recommended

I’ve just started watching this, Unfortunately I have to watch bits when I can without the Missus about due to her unpleasant dealings with the Catholic Church as a child. Anyway, I digress, great cast, Ralph Finnes one of my favourites, looking forward to seeing more.

Stand by Me - Somehow this had always been on my list but never seen until yesterday. What a great film and so well played by the young cast.

Gladiator II. Watched to see how bad it could be and it didn’t disappoint. Silly CGI, crap story, massive plot holes, weak leading man. Denzel Washington was good but otherwise very poor and pointless.

The order. Based on a true story. Grizzled F.B.I agent (played by the excellent Jude Law) looking for the quieter life in a small town, get drawn into a cat-and-mouse chase with a white supremacist cult led by the slightly unconvincing Nickolas Hoult. Set in the early 80’s with great cinematography and decent story for a solid watch. Few tweaks to cast /plot and really could have a been a belter.

Civil War on Prime. Most definitely not what most people will be expecting (as per reviews) and all the better for it.

Most enjoyable in my view although I suspect most will be disappointed as it's not a shoot 'em up action film.

As a side note, it is weird watching Kirsten Dunst as the older woman.

Been watching the alternative Christmas movies on our streaming services.

Red One. So so. Good for a laugh. Nothing serious. Enjoyed the violent Snowmen.

Violent Night. Quite enjoyed this one. Drunken Santa played by David Habour as an ex Norwegian Warrior god. Now Santa. Lots of bloody violence with a big hammer. What's not to like?

I enjoyed Violent Night for what it was. Red One's potential was outmatched by it's failure imo.

I went to the premiere of "A Complete Unknown" last night. Had been looking forward to it since I heard it was being released - somehow my eldest grandson won tickets.

It focuses on Dylan's rapid rise to fame between 1961 and 1965 and his move / switch from "folk" to "electric" and his relationships with Peter Seeger, Suze Rotolo (called Sylvie Russo in the film and I don't really know why), Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez - up to the release of Highway 61 Revisited - lauded as one of the most influential albums in Rock and Roll history.

If, like me, you like Dylan's music from this era then the tunes alone are reason enough to go to watch it - the film is peppered with many of his great works in one form or other but the thing that I found most impressive was Timothee Chalomet's performance as the young Bob Dylan. It is absolutely captivating. His vocal performances are so "true to form" and all of Dylan's foibles and nuances seem to have been mastered. I don't really know much about Chalomet but I guess he must be one hell of an actor.

I guess the film serves as a "historical record" of part of a highly important era in the history of popular music, an opportunity to hear some absolute banging tunes and, if neither of those appeal it is, in Chalomet's performance, a testament to the thespian art.

I don't really know anything about people's cultural likes and dislikes on here but if you're in any way interested I'd urge you to give it a look.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Cocaine Bear on Netflix. Silly nonsense as expected but lets itself down by not being brave enough to go complete bonkers/maintain initial impact and tries to install some morals. Avoid unless determined.

As a grumpy old man I don't like to heap praise on anyone so young, but Chalamet has it (and I don't even like the Dune genre). He even comes over as a decent sort in interviews.

Not been that impressed with him so far. Handsome in an effeminate way, he was ok in Dune and does seem genuine and likeable in interviews. Maybe the Dylan will be the making of him.

Started off ok with some funny moments but couldn’t quite keep the momentum going. Better watched when mildly inebriated.

I think he's a fantastic actor. First saw him in Don't Look Up but it was a small role he was playing. In Dune he was good though the 1st film was rather plodding. As Wonka he really shone. He completely embraces the role and his natural talent is evident.

Nosferatu. 7.5 on IMdB somehow. Laughably poor. The plot is solid and has been for 128 years, so that’s half the work done, but the acting from the leading cast lets the film down. Lily Rose depp struggles with any extended dialogue. Nicholas Holt is very bland and has been for most of his roles with the exception possibly of Mad Max Fury road and Aaron Taylor-Johnson seems to be doing his best to sabotage his chances of landing the Bond gig with a string of terrible roles/performances. Willem Dafoe is solid as always and Bill Skarsgård takes a decent stab at Count Orlok (Nosferatu) creating a niche as a dependable movie monster.

+ 1 on the Dylan film. Brilliantly done. I'd happily pay to watch that again...
