Triple 9 on Netflix last night. Typical dodgy cop movie but absolutely nothing went as I expected.

Latest Ghostbuster movie, Frozen Empire, with the kids. Cashing in on nostalgia but misses the mark. Formulaic, mildly amusing at best. 6/10 max.

The Killer - David Fincher film starring Michael Fassbender. Pretty basic in terms of plot but slickly directed and pretty watchable. 6.5/10.

Speaking of Fassbender, watched Next Goal Wins. Basically, it's Cool Runnings on grass, which I presume the writers were on too. Pleasant and warm story inspired by truer events than I thought when I watched it. Needed to be sharper: 6/10.

Maybe it's just me but I find Fassbender to be a cold fish that I just can't connect with. Same for Jake Gyllenhaal.

Adam Sandler is just another universe level of annoying. Now refuse to watch any movie he is in.

I think Sandler's one of the sharpest operators in the business. He knows his market but occasionally deviates slightly from it to keep things interesting for himself. It's not for me although watching his movies with my kids gives me a new perspective (and you're in safer hands than an Eddie Murphy film).

Used to feel the same about Jim Carrey until I saw him in Eternal sunshine..... I suspect Sandler's got a career defining series role in him sometime too (if Netflix let him).

People say that was his role in Uncut Gems but I found the film pretty unwatchable (although I think that was how it was meant to be)

In fairness "cold fish" was pretty much the definition of the character in The Killer so he was ideal for the role.

Same here with Fassbender. I feel like he should be doing better, seems to have the right ingredients, has the looks, I think he can act (might be wrong) doesn’t take himself too seriously, so a comedic turn not a problem. But as you say, he leaves me cold for some reason and hasn’t made a decent film for nearly 10 years 🤷‍♂️ Assassins Creed being one of the worst of all time.

True. It could also be said that Sandler is a great actor playing annoying characters.

Trouble is that I find that about all their movies.

Most definitely a shrewd operator and has put money before *quality on occasion. Carey has more talent than Sandler but neither hit the mark in serious roles where the acting shouldn’t be conspicuous.

Shame was the best of Fassbender IMHO - again, a role he was absolutely made for.

Rebel Moon part two. Seven samurai/magnificent 7 sci-fi. First part was watchable, second was absolute garbage, formulaic crap. By the end was hoping everyone would die horribly.

First half way decent film in the genre in years. Haven't laughed so much in ages 😁

Alien Romulus. Decent amount of tension and genuine scares mid movie. Some good physical effects and plenty of face hugger/ xenomorph drool to enjoy. But with the weak mostly English cast you don’t care enough about, basic plot and silly ending, you’d be better off revisiting the original Alien movie which Romulus often references but pales in comparison.

A few to catch up on...

Aftersun - a deeply moving and affecting piece. Stayed with me for days and ended up watching a second time. Mescal and the girl playing his daughter are both magnificent. It won't be for everyone (it is quite slow and lacking in plot at first) but for me this is true cinematic art, bravely and confidently directed with great restraint. 9/10

The Outfit - entertaining little film with a great performance (as usual) from Mark Rylance. Assumed it was adapted from a play as all the action takes place in one location, but actually don't think that's the case. Well worth a watch. 7.5/10

In the Land of Saints and Sinners - decent return to form for Liam Neeson after all the post-Taken action dross. Good ensemble cast including a couple of Game of Thrones cast and Kerry Condon giving a turn as a hard faced, foul mouthed IRA type. 6.5/10

Yardie - Idris Elba's directorial debut. Found this pretty poor. Bit messy, at times a sub-Lock Stock gangster caper. Some good music - think he shoud have just made a film about that. Unnecessary voice over throughout. 4/10.

  • The Batman (2022) enjoyable dark and gritty batman film, with a bit of a retro feel to it.

I was channel surfing about a week ago and came across the start of a film, I thought "that would be good to watch another night" it started too late to watch at the time. However, I can't remember what it was or the channel.

The bit I saw was two young boys being herded along by prison guards, they were in a nazi camp for Jews. They were taken into a large warehouse where people were soring belongings from suitcases. They were picking open clothing in which valuables had been hidden, a woman tried to hide a pearl necklace.

Did anyone see it, or is it familiar? Please.

(I'll admit that whilst I thought it was a film, it have been the start of a series)

  • Saw 'Lee' as it was pensioners cheap screening £5 including a cup of tea!

Had no idea about it beforehand but an excellent film about Lee Millar who became a WW2 news photographer , well acted and well filmed.

  • The boy in the striped pyjamas? Bloody great film 👌

    Heretic

Very much a departure for me as I a) went to an actual real cinema and b) watched a horror film.

The 3 principles, including Hugh Grant, are exceptional. Hugh plays a sinister version of "Hugh Grant" exceptionally well adding just the right amount of creepiness to send a shiver down the spine without it seeming like a parody. Chloe East plays a young enthusiastic mormon missionary perfectly. If you've never had the ?fortune of going to Salt Lake City for a geology field trip (or maybe to ride MTB in Moab in the 90s) - that bubbly positivity is exactly what they are like. Sophie Thatcher (yes ok, I goggled them) plays the slighly more world weary "elder sister who knows something's up" very well. The close up camera work and their acting is all very well done.

I really liked the first act where the three are having an increasingly tense theological discussion. As a former public school choirboy turned boring british atheist, I found it intruiging. I feel like unless you have something of a religious eduation you may miss a lot of it but then if you went through a stoner phase in the 90s and watched South Park's seminal work "all about mormons" or a single 00's Hitchens/Dawkins youtube clip then you're probably fine. The film itself walks the line between pro or anti-religion very skillfully, never leaning too far one way or the other.

The second act turns into more typical horror (guess what peri-theological text is referenced as they have to "go down, to go out") and as someone who (with 2 exceptions) has always really struggled with suspending disbelief for horror films this is where i began to lose it a little. I'm probably the only person who yearned for a little more stoner theology and less jump scares with scary ghoulies. However it was a rollicking old end to the fillum and it held my interest to the end, which is a genuine acheivement for a horror.

Definitely one to add to the list for the 3 superb acting performances alone.

We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Thanks, but I don't think it was that one. The title would have stuck in my memory having I've seen it before.

    Smile 2.

plenty of jump scares, heaps of gore, well acted, a tad silly at times even for this genre but worth a watch, particularly if you liked the first one. Will no doubt be a part 3.

A Private War on Prime starring Rosamund Pike. Not a pleasant watch (nor should it be given the subject) yet has more laughs than many a so-called-comedy. Stand out believable acting performances where you believe in the characters, although some (Stanley Tucci just as an example) appear to have been shoehorned in to flesh out her personal life.

Gives an eye-opening perspective to Syria, and dare I say it, Gaza today.

Seems to be some real stinkers around at the moment. Joker 2, Red One, Megalopolis and judging by the trailers, Gladiator 2 looks like a right CGI mess of a movie.

  • My daughter went to see Joker 2 - she said it was absolutely awful - a musical with poor songs and no action or much of a plot. Couldn't understand why on earth it would be a musical!

Think they were going for an ironic anti-film but exceeded the brief.
