My custom foil sandwich bag reflector worked its magic. Now I wish I could just find some more exotic, colourful ones...

Long(ish) exposure taken in semi darkness, which caught the gloominess.

I'd like to visit this place for a spot of photography. Endless abandoned buildings...

Hi all. Can you help with some recommendations please? I think my iPhone is pretty good for taking quick photos etc, but as we also do a lot of walking/ hiking I would like something that would take better photos particularly of the distance which the iPhone really doesn’t do well.
I am really out of touch with what’s out there having relied on the phone. The ability to link via an app to be able to save the photos to my photos on the iPhone is important. It needs to be pretty rugged and fairly portable to access when hiking/ out and about. Ideally, one lense that does everything….but don’t mind if you are able to buy separate lenses etc.
I’m currently on a riding trip and our group leader has been uploading and sharing his photos taken on a camera which shows what is possible.
Don’t mind buying new, or second hand and a budget of up to approx £400 to get sorted before Christmas ready in time for a trip to the Lake Disrict. Any links to products either new, or on EBay etc would be brilliant and appreciated!
A big ask, but thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Personally I'd go for an APS-C body with ultra zoom but that's likely too big, heavy and expensive.
A compact is likely your best bet. American but try here for ideas - https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/buying-guide-best-compact-zoom-cameras
To extend your budget by going used then something like this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226478950413?_skw=sony+rx100&itmmeta=01JEENXDEBHYD51GR1THKB11C0&hash=item34bb32880d:g:~YYAAOSwan1nTvb4&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA0HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlUOPws7puPRnk1G1XQAt7Gl86QTTfVEiw6CcXQIePphy20dahe10HASn8fDiw6WJWvsjk%2Bg0uVXcLaB7NNL%2BFoQBMNVEz8E7MwCFlKSyt%2BKjfGPbL%2BHA6ynS8GcVdMIvfacwTSape7qHIoUOBB84GpxMYNXr7cU%2BoUHaTpwcEtGo9SdkEkVPkxP0gmcnhX8o1261fZm0%2F44cAV%2BBnB2pQttvir9VFRO0BEjIJOEaTMjenMQ%2Bo4kfsPh85vomuNVrM%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR6LX9dXzZA

Apologies @pross, but I think I've kinda worked out why this AI-type of shot is increasingly annoying me...
I absolutely love the experience of going out in the dead of night in a light-pollution-free area and letting my eyes acclimatise to the dark and more and more of the night sky reveal itself to me.
And this? It strips away the wonder, the human experience... it's just saying to me "Look what machines and computers can see!" One might as well do a scan of X-rays or cosmic particles or anything else the human eye can't see. [/rant]
tl;dr: technically - very clever; otherwise - meh.

I like the fact that everyone seems to have differing opinions about what makes a good photograph (same with music, art etc), keeps things interesting.
On the astro side of things, I get your take, but there are excellent examples out there. I suppose no photograph can compete with real experiences as the only sense you’re left with is your vision, viewing a static, cropped image of the heavens on a computer monitor.

I’m out of touch too with the latest camera tech, but a micro 4/3 camera (Olympus) might suit your needs. They’ve small bodies and the lenses are very compact compared to other systems with great image stabilisation. Price?
I’d think carefully before any purchases, as your iPhone seems to mostly fit your needs.

Yeah, defo re taste... just that I'm trying to analyse why my taste here is as it is. I mean, some people don't like big band jazz or Mahler, and that's fine too... just more interesting (to me) if people can articulate why, hence my trying to understand my own dislikes.

And yes, re the "static, cropped view of the heavens"... the smells, the sounds, the sense of vast limitless space, are all missing from a photo - the actual visual element is just part of the experience.
But each to his/her own, for sure.

Personally, likes/dislikes feel hardwired, increasingly so with age. Now with fast-paced internet culture, opinions in photography are often made in a split second, then a swipe, which is a shame.

I don’t like those colours in night images. That’s just bad processing for me. Astro modified cameras can bring out colours the eye doesn’t see and can create some beautiful images but like a lot of stuff people tend to overdo it (the same as when they discover the saturation sliders).

Brian’s compact seems to do a very decent job. I can’t remember what one it is although I seem to recall he found it difficult to replace it recently.

I think it cuts both ways though. I sometimes see something and think it will make a great photo but the camera just doesn’t do what the human eye does.
I don’t feel photography should be about capturing what the eye sees though. Long exposure images of moving water can be stunning but so can very fast shots that capture the individual droplets, neither is what you see though. The same with macro shots, the whole point is they allow us to see details our eyes don’t pick up or even create and abstract ‘what the hell is that?’ shot (I saw an incredible macro photo of an ant earlier, it looked like a terrifying alien).

It's a Sony HX60... worth keeping an eye on eBay, if it takes your fancy, though my one caveat is that they don't bounce very well or enjoy swimming in Dartmoor streams.

A big thank you for all of your suggestions, thoughts and links etc. That’s really appreciated and helpful and gives me some great starting points. I’ve got some time next week to take a proper look and hopefully make a purchase!
With very best wishes.

Testing an oldie 24mm wide angle prime lens. I’d not normally use a wide for anything close up, but this one's party trick is its pseudo macro ability (not true 1:1 macro). The rendering looks good (subjective) and the susceptibility to lens flare is something worth playing around with.

Timing was as tricky as ever, trying to get a wave rolling in together with some action in the foreground water. Took a few, with this possibly the most balanced, if not the largest waves.
I wouldn’t advise doing this sort of thing in your new boots, Brian, Ended up with soaked feet and salty boots. Boots are drying on top of the boiler…bet they’ll dry all crispy.

I always think wellies would be useful, but like you never end up buying any.
