The jury only took hours to reach a verdict too which suggests that having reviewed the evidence in full it wasn't a particularly difficult decision.

Many Israelis make the argument that the Palestinians and Lebanese should stand up to Hamas and Hezbollah (this is a justification for why it is ok to bomb everything), but then Israel, as a state, completely fails to deal with their own extremists, and the mainstream Israelis do not rationalise that issue in the same way.

Commonwealth games sports confirmed. It has been really cut back. The argument seems to be that hockey, for example, involves accommodating a lot of athletes which presumably won't be recovered in ticket sales. I don't understand why they can't hold some of the events in another City. Squash could be set up anywhere, is competitive at commonwealth games level and pays for itself the rest of the year.

I understand their rationale, but if all they are able to offer is 10 sports then it probably was the right moment to bring the CG to a permanent end.

There were 10 sports in 1970, 1974, 1986, 1990 and 1994. 11 or 12 in the years in between.

My issue is that presumably international hockey tournaments take place in the same way that squash ones do. How do they manage to fun themselves and can't that be done at the same time as the commonwealth games?

Do you mean that certain sports as per your examples of hockey and squash seek external funding and then run the competition under the CG banner?
If so, I am guessing that would be a massive conflict with regards sponsorship rules, both for the CG own branding and sponsorship, and for those external sponsors just investing in a single sport.

I don't know anything about hockey and you are right that squash is often sponsored (e.g. "Comcast Business U.S. Open Championships 2024"); however, some events such as the London Open are not that obviously sponsored. Furthermore, they all have prize money funds to pay which they could probably not bother with for the commonwealth games. Maybe it doesn't work and they did it, but I just wondered whether they could ask the federations whether or not they could run a self-financing competition under the commonwealh games banner.

I get what you mean. I think it is a good idea in that sports such as squash would get some prime media exposure. I would guess though that self interest of individual federations would come into it and they would likely want some degree of compensation from the CG federation, in addition to any self funding, which would likely make it unfeasible.

The thing is, they're talking about cutting back so that they can take the Games around the Commonwealth with more host countries but one of the two compulsory sports is swimming. How many Commonwealth countries outside those that have generally shared the hosting over the years have a 50m swimming pool? Track cycling, that requires a purpose built facility that would hardly get used in many Commonwealth countries, is currently in whereas road racing that just needs roads has been cut. There's no logic to what they've done as far as I can see. Rugby 7s or hockey (two sports I don't particularly want to watch) have to be easier to host than the likes of track cycling, swimming or gymnastics. The athletics venue makes it look more like a school sports day than an international event that can attract some of the worlds very best athletes on the track in particular. They may as well have just killed it off altogether.

They chose those sports because the British cannot tolerate closed roads and because they built a velodrome for 2014 etc. I don't see a particular issue with different sports in different editions, but it is already a crowded calendar and that's the main issue I have with them.
Also, "common wealth" is a bit of a misnomer given the actual wealth distribution amongst participating countries.
Let's face it, they are the once part of the British empire games and for that reason alone they probably have had their day.

FWIW, there seems to be some politicking about the Panorama programme and the insulin thing, if anyone wants to go down that rabbit hole (and I don't blame them if they don't). Hammond questions how R4 File on Four had such a different perspective on the question.
