Today is the busiest day of the year for midwives. On average around 2,000 births occur each day, but to the figure is 2,200. 26th September is the most common birthday in the year.
Oddly enough, it is aparently exactly the normal gestation period since Christmas!

There's not much else to do on boxing day.

Unless the thesis is that fat white unemployed men are currently a national anchor, and we would do well to get them trained in something, physically fit and occupied, rather than whining about immigrants and voting reform?

I've not read the article but it might be suggesting they recruit those who wanted to get a job in the media ?

This is interesting logic from The Telegraph - if you can spot the difference between this and what other public sector employees use to justify their demands, you're doing better than me.

An example of why Private Eye is worth following:
I really do hope that the Teesside scandals can now get properly exposed with Labour in power. I suspect that Houchen is in it up to his neck, and that it's not just a bit of sloppy vetting that has led to this appointment.

To be fair, as someone well acquainted with Birmingham fish market it does have an odour that is somewhat fragrant. I doubt she caught a two day illness from there though. I also like the fact she was looking for a beauty supply shop she saw on Yelp which actually turned out to be an indoor market stall. Welcome to Brum!

I'm starting to come round to your view on Private Eye Brian.

They are equally happy to lampoon anyone given the chance. It's one reason it's such a good read.

Iran has fired over 180 missiles into Israel this evening.

Well, according Trump (78) this would never have happened if he was president.
You shouldn't be trying to govern a Country when you're 78.

Can't help feeling that Netanyahu is not interested in peace (not that Iran is either), but he's at risk of overplaying his hand by fighting battles on multiple fronts, even if you ignore the moral questions of proportionality of how many hundreds of civilians you kill to eliminate one legitimate target.

His political future relies upon prolongation of a war. Second that's over, he is out.

If anyone is still interested, Phil Hammond is still prodding about Lucy Letby. As much as anything his interest is in how 'expert witnesses' are (mis)used in such cases. He makes parallels with the BRI neonatal heart unit which he played a big part in exposing via Private Eye, and that in both cases the units were operating beyond their competence.

I do find the lack of criticism of Iran a strange one from people who criticise Israel. Iran is at the heart of just as much unrest in the Middle East, if not more, and on top of that are providing weapons to Russia.

I suspect that part of the difference in focus is because the US and UK still are, in effect, supporters of Israel (selling them arms etc, especially so in the case of the US), and definitely not of Iran. I'm trying to find some passable analogy why that should matter, but my brain's too tired to come up with anything helpful.
But, as I say, leaving all that aside, I question the pragmatism of opening up another front by provoking another aggressive neighbour, and one with considerably more firepower than in Gaza, whilst further riling international allies. Righteousness isn't going to stop bombs dropping on Israel.

Here ya go, @Pross - no clever analogy, but thoughts about pragmatism from someone cleverer and far more experienced than me:

Apologies, back to Letby. The below kinda seems significant. As Hammond says, he himself has been on duty in wards several times when people have died... it's the nature of all hospitals. especially wards that are handling the hardest cases, and even more so when the ward is stretched beyond its capabilities.

William Shatner is 93 years old today. He was born on March 22, 1931.
Are you a fan of his work in Star Trek or something else?
I just asked it, by the way, how would you both have found out his age?

Israel has done an amazing job of normalising attacks on health care centres. Last night's one was affiliated with Hezbollah.
Also, they seem to have managed to kill more Israeli soldiers by invading Lebanon than Iran did with 200 missiles.

To be fair it is Netanyahu that is making Putin look like a humanitarian. There are plenty of Israelis objecting to and protesting about the war.
