This was their manifesto.
Our economy has become overly dependent on workers from abroad to fill skills shortages. As a result, we have seen net migration reach record highs; more than triple the level than at the last election in 2019. The overall level must be properly controlled and managed. Failure to do so reduces the incentives for businesses to train locally. So, Labour will reduce net migration.
We will reform the points-based immigration system so that it is fair and properly managed, with appropriate restrictions on visas, and by linking immigration and skills policy. Labour will not tolerate employers or recruitment agencies abusing the visa system. And we will not stand for breaches of employment law. Employers who flout the rules will be barred from hiring workers from abroad.
Conservative policy is incoherent, with decisions on migration, skills and sectoral pay determined in isolation. Labour will bring joined-up thinking, ensuring that migration to address skills shortages triggers a plan to upskill workers and improve working conditions in the UK. We will strengthen the Migration Advisory Committee, and establish a framework for joint working with skills bodies across the UK, the Industrial Strategy Council and the Department for Work and Pensions. We will end the long-term reliance on overseas workers in some parts of the economy by bringing in workforce and training plans for sectors such as health and social care, and construction.
The days of a sector languishing endlessly on immigration shortage lists with no action to train up workers will come to an end.

Sir Tony said: “I think what they are doing on border control and so on, if they can make it effective, will make a huge difference.”
Yes, massive burn.
0 -
But they're 5 days into their term and haven't done anything yet!
0 -
And the prisons are already full.
Robert Jenrick is definitely right to blame this on the new government.

It appears that tensions are already mounting behind the scenes at Labour HQ. Could it be that they see Rayner as a bit of a liability?

Keep living in hope that everything The Telegraph tells you is true Stevo. It’s going to be a tough 5 years. Anyway, how does Rayner being frozen out tally with the dire warnings that she is going to be pulling Starmer’s strings that we were getting a couple of weeks ago?
2 -
Maybe it's because she does have undue influence that they are trying to clip her wings.
Anyway, if you read the article you'll see that there is evidence to support. I guess they're doing what they can to limit the damage she can do, bit it's a bit difficult as the deputy PM is elected by the members so she is effectively unsackable. Fun times ahead...

She's the replacement for Oliver Dowden, right?
0 -
It's Schrödinger's Rayner: she's both been sidelined and is pulling all the strings.
Or the Telegraph is just making things up.

I do hope the Tories want to waste 5 years to the next election having this 'fun'
“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -
No-one s going to take them seriously until they've addressed how unserious and dysfunctional a party they've allowed themselves to become.
Labour does need a proper opposition, especially with the size of their majority, but the longer Tories think that loony Telegraph pieces qualifies as a roadmap for turning the Tory Party back into a serious political entity, the longer it will be before they are listened to.
I'm sure Labour won't mind though.

Nope, the wing clipping is a probable consequence of the influence she wields. Have a read of the article.

Wrong party, it's Labour we're talking about here.

That's the point.

You seem to be confusing the Conservative party and the Daily Telegraph.

Glad you've realised your mistake.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Will the Tories realise theirs?
Or continue to have fun times in opposition?

There’s a difference?

I guess so, in the same way that there's a difference between the Labour Party and the unions...

If I was being mean I'd say the difference is that the Conservatives have a future. The Telegraph is going the way of Debenhams.

Stevo will be happy to hear Labour are making a complete hash of running Wales. They seem to be modelling themselves on the last Tory Government down to the in fighting and 3 leaders in a year.

Thanks Pross, although I already know what a hash they've been making of it. A lot of it seems to be down to them being lefties as far as I can see.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Incompetence comes in all colours of rosette, as has been evidenced elsewhere.
0 -
Plenty more of that to come in the UK.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Maybe you just think that the past 14 years of Tory government incompetence was because they were lefties.

Writing could be on the wall for the unions despite what Labour might try to free them up to hold us to ransom...the allegedly exploited Amazon workers in Coventry just voted against unionising. Well done Amazon for telling the GMB where to stick their collective bargaining.

No need to apologise.
