To rephrase, it appears that the popularity of unions is continuing to decline, notwithstanding the fact that Labour will make it easier for the unions to cause problems.

You were pointing out something you felt doesn't have a future: I was pointing out something else that I don't think has a future.

Gotcha. Was thinking about those industries that don't really bother with unions and I suspect the common factor is that there's a good balance between employers and employees in the first place, with plenty of choice for the latter to look elsewhere if they're not happy and vice versa. This is obviously more difficult if you have a small number of large employers or even effectively a single employer. I don't think it's chance that the most strident unions are those in the rail industry.

In other news, who'd have thought that Corbyn would have been trying to stir trouble in the Labour Party?
Strangely, in his 2017 Labour manifesto, apparently it said nothing about lifting the cap.

Starmer's in a bit of trouble when there's a major rebellion, given he's already brought the bazooka out. I suspect he'll regret making it a 3 line whip.

I used to think he was a bit of an idiot getting his strings pulled by others, I now realise he's just an idiot.

Worth hearing Emily Thornberry on it... she's reason to be miffed as she was left out of the Cabinet... but...

Sure so what is he going to do when 50 of them rebel?
Should have given them a smack down but no expulsion so when the big rebellion comes you can take down the ringleaders. Now what is he going to do?

And the political logic is correct. Every part of public services has some really tragic stuff happening due to lack of funding. Not all of it can be funded, so it stands to reason to fund the bits that are popular with the public.
The cap is popular so why spend money on removing it?

I suspect Starmer knows the targets are Corbynite types, so an early warning to anyone else trying stunts. They will all have known it was a trap laid by Flynn, and were warned of the consequences. They could have abstained, but they chose to make a point on the first vote. I think it's another part of Starmer's control of the party and getting rid of unsubtle troublemakers.

Ian Dunt agrees with you, RC, but I suspect that Starmer knows the characters and responded accordingly, in the circumstances.

Didn't take long for the problems to start emerging. Let's hope it carries on 😊

It's the King's Speech. It's *always* a three line whip.

They've got a way to go before the majority gets as slim as 80, and we all remember how excited you were about that.

The Tories should table as many motions as possible where they reckon some Labour backbenchers will vote against the party line and let Starmer remove the whip from them every time to show how ruthless he is. Just a suggestion 😇

...and prove again they have no interest in actually using their positions as MPs to do something helpful towards digging us out of the mess they created. Good plan if they want to lose the next election by a similar margin, while grown-ups actually do some work.

Agree, they were mostly Corbyn's shadow cabinet and key allies. John McDonnell has already written a disingenuous piece in the Guardian about how he "tried to end child poverty and was instead suspended", glossing over the fact that Starmer got rid of his best mate and rid the party of many of the left wing loony types.

You do wonder whether Corbyn was/is a Tory party plant at times...
0 -
Well, we know that he was supported by at least one tory.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Again, reality doesn't matter in this regard: Corbyn's election manifesto included retaining the cap, but perception is reality, amirite?

Yeah, sure, it's all about the team name, not about good governance. Perhaps you haven't noticed the pound is up and business is welcoming some sensible stable governance. Apparently none of that matters to you.

It is, but I am not sure how this will actually be perceived by most people. I suspect some will see it as rash and overly harsh and many will not really care (talking about the suspensions obviously, not the issue of child poverty).

Let's see if that sticks once they have announced their raft of worker/union friendly legislation and implemented the tax rises that they are building up to with all this guff abut 'we didn't know if was as bad as this'.
Also the Euro is weak at least partly due to mater on the other side of the channel, such as French political deadlock and German economic weakness.

The cap is really popular and you can’t fund everything. So you might as well chose to fund things that are popular.
