Every time I see one of these 'woke madness' headlines, I am reminded of Stewart Lee's 'political correctness gone mad' bit.

The day after they bombed the Iranian consulate, Israel has bombed world central kitchen workers. Apparently, this was a tragic accident which has resulted in world central kitchen ceasing its attempt to feed the starving.

I was such a talented chemist I stopped being one nearly 20 years ago.

You begin to wonder just how far Netanyahu has to go before the west will turn on him. Very far apparently.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

To be fair, at least four settlers have been sanctioned by the US and the UK.
0 -
It has gone well past ‘the right to defend ourselves’.
0 -
Is that going to bother Netanyahu?

Crumbs!

Cake is just weakness entering the body1 -
What's the point in human life without scones and clotted cream (I can take or leave the jam)?
0 -
Scone and cream without jam? The world is full of pervs and sickos.

I struggle to see how vegans reconcile competing for food sources with animals. Surely that's unethical.

It feels like the world is in its worst state in my lieftime. Maybe the early stages of my life before I noticed were worse with the Cold War and various financial / political crises. We have one major war going on in Europe and Israel now seeming intent on starting another in the Middle East alongside the proxy wars in Syria and Yemen. It feels like a Trump election win could end up being the spark that really sets everything off. I'm not generally a pessimist but everything just feels shitter than ever at the moment. Out of interest, how does Israel even afford the amount it spends on military action? It doesn't feel like they have a huge GDP.

The scone is really only there as a vessel for the clotted cream and to stop you looking like complete pig by eating it straight from the pot.

Cows are vegan and I eat cows, so indirectly I'm vegan too.

To get back on topic, this is probably now a hate crime in Scotland.

it can afford it because the usa is israel's bitch
the usa has been subsidising israel since its founding, by far the largest recipient of usa funding, inflation adjusted i believe it's c. 300 billion so far
unfortunately the usa never turned off the tap when israel first began its program of seizing territory and subjugating/displacing/dispossessing/slaughtering palestinians
now it's too late, the 'two-state solution' is a fantasy, israel has become a de facto apartheid state and occupying power
but even now the usa is pouring in more billions of weaponry

It has huge tech and medical r&d sectors and is very entrepreneurial. It also has a large defense manufacturing sector.

It looks like their defence budget is about a third of that of the UK (but a higher proportion on their GDP). How are they able to be permanently fighting wars when the UK sometimes feels like it barely has the resources to carry out peace time operations?
0 -
How many Trident subs and aircraft carriers do they have?

As a vegan can you eat lamb because sheep are vegetables.
0 -
No, of course not. It's a meaningless gesture.

It feels like Israel is getting more criticism from western allies than it has in the past. Even the US seem to be trying to talk some sense into them albeit whilst still helping them wage war. Lots of internal unrest and disillusionment with Netanyahu too. Hopefully his days are numbered but that doesn’t mean any successor will be less of a hardliner

Sounds like the same order of magnitude as the Marshall Plan. Given that was over 3 years I think you are stretching that claim a bit. Given Israel's neighbours especially since the 70s, I think it's pretty obvious why the US would support a friendly state in that part of the world.

i was surprised, but if you check the numbers it really is on that scale
post camp david it felt like there was real hope for resolution, the less-batshit neighbours were reconciled to peace if not friendship
that was ultimately torpedoed by corruption/infighting/incompetence on the palestinian side and the violence of the israeli right
since then, the rise of the terrorist 'settler' movement and the far right has turned israel into a consistent aggressor with zero regard for the lives of innocents, they don't want peace, they want all of the land for israel, they don't even hide it anymore
remember, the rise of hamas was welcomed by netanyahu, it divided the palestinians, and ensured sufficient a level of violence for israel to claim justification for it's increasingly brutal subjugation of the palestinians
when, say, iran conducts assassinations, bombings, etc., we rightly call it state sponsored terrorism, and that is exactly what israel has done for years, the israeli government lost any moral authority long ago, it's just another loathsome regime
we shouldn't continue propping it up until it commits to work to a genuine and equitable resolution

I'm sure you're aware they have military service is mandatory in Israel. Or are you happy to just lump the whole nation together to keep things simple?
