Walking the dogs the other night and a group of chavs in a car did that thing where they drive up slowly behind you and the passenger leans out of the window and shouts to try and startle you. Unfortunately for them they presumably hadn’t spotted my big dog walking on the inside who doesn’t take kindly to perceived threats and lunged towards them. The passenger absolutely shat himself.

Finding a bag of sprouts in U Express... I'd overlooked getting any for my Christmas Day cooked-picnic-up-a-mountain. Now they have been lightly steamed ready for frying with garlic on the day, to go along with a chicken quarter, chipolatas, baked potato (controversial) and homemade sage & onion stuffing, which will be all cooked in the morning and wrapped in a several layers of insulation. Christmas pud came from a friend in Devon, and I've got a 250ml bottle of Ventoux red to complete the picnic. Weather's looking spiffing, so will probably be in shorts & T-shirt, if only to convince the French that I am indeed totally nuts.

I probably oughtn't to feel smug about my Christmas location choice, but this year I've struck lucky, so I'm going to be very rude and feel smug. I gather that Devon is grey, wet and windy. Romeyer isn't - this was a view from my garden this morning.

Christmas lunch in the oven, wine in the rucksack ready for the walk to 1100m for my picnic under a cool azure blue sky. And yes, maybe red with chicken is controversial, but I don't care. That's a 250ml bottle, BTW, which also cheers me up.

I had to navigate my way back down from 1100m afterwards... Anyway, it was most splendid: the food stayed hot, and the view wasn't bad. Even better, it turned into a shorts & T-shirt day, and I didn't meet anyone at all and had the mountain all to myself 😁

Devon friends are resorting to the "At least it's not cold!" gambit. A bit of sunshine at Christmas goes a long way to staving off what can be a rather claustrophobic time if you're stuck indoors avoiding rain & gales.
I must admit that the idea of a remote, hot Christmas lunch was hatched about 20 years ago when it was a beautiful day, and, as much as I loved my parents, and enjoyed cooking their Christmas Day lunch, thought how lovely it would have been to be at Fur Tor away from all the Christmas Crap. At least with both parents having gone I don't need to feel guilty about my festive misanthropy these days.

I've just had it confirmed that at least 1/2 hour needs to be added to Christmas Day dinner timings.
Must remember to leave the roast parsnips and carrots uncovered next time... 🤣

Where Mum went wrong was trying to get everything co-ordinated to finish cooking at the same time. It makes it so much better (and easier) if you aim to get the turkey (if that is your choice of dead animal) cooked & out of the oven 40 minutes before serving, so the oven can go nuclear for the ro-poes and carrots & parsnips, while you get other things sorted, including the gravy and serving slaves.

Buying myself some noise-cancelling Amazon earbuds. I'd got their equivalent headphones, which I've used a lot, but they are a bit bulky when travelling, and the ears overheat a bit if I wear them for too long. Now I've got some better internet here, it's been nice to 'tune into' France Musique's streaming channels. when around the house.
I'd pooh-poohed bluetooth headphones for a long while, but I'm a convert. And yes, I know I'm probably 10 years behind everyone else. I'm a slow learner.

Yup! Did all that. The half hour thing was for interruptions. Calls, visits etc.
Foodwise all was to perfection with the rib roast suitably rested with the exception of the damned roast veggies.
Went down a treat anyway to the point of no room for desert. Heresy! Later, and soon. 😉

Went to the brother-in-law for Christmas Dinner for the first time yesterday. He’d been a professional chef who trained and worked in 4 or 5 star hotels for 30 years until giving it up last year after health issues. The sprouts were done right (with bacon) as was everything else. It was also nice to be somewhere where the cooking wasn’t causing any any stress. To top it all he gave me a selection of single malts as a present.0

Lagavulin - too peaty. Much prefer the low peat single malt like Glenfarclas.

Ma raver likes a whiskey and found a bottle of Penderryn Special Grand Slam Edition 2008 in Grandpa raver's cupboard that he never drank (I probably gave it to him tbf).
It was brought out a few weeks back and I tried to suggest we just take 5 minutes to google what it's worth as the welsh are ratehr fond of their grand slam memories but no luck as she tore into it...

(It does not taste like a £450 whiskey, do be honest it doesnt really taste like a £45 whiskey)
