Plus he hasn't won a Major in a while so I imagine a possible Olympic medal looked quite tempting.

I’ve lost touch with the track cycling. Finucane seems a good shout and maybe the women’s team sprint but no idea if we are back in contention for the TPs or men’s sprints. Omnium feels like a bit of a lottery sometimes. Eight from twelve certainly feels unlikely though.

Yes, she was tipping Finucane for 3 golds, plus both team pursuits (don't see that happening), Jack Carlin in the Kierin (can't recall the other two). I think 3 or 4 is definitely a possibility, but agree that 8 seems highly unlikely.

Jon Rahm appears to have had an Olympic-class choke. Was 6 under through 10, leading comfortably, at -20, then drops 5 in last 8 to finish in fifth. Given his temper I’ll bet there was some serious swearing going on… 😁

How come there's not a mixed golf relay, mens, women's and mixed four ball better ball and stuff lie that? Or separate medals for driving, chipping and putting?

Oh god, I wasn't serious.

I blame you.

Couldn't quite work out what happened in the triathlon relay. I missed the end of the final swim / start of the cycle leg and when I turned on the Brit had a decent lead on the bike but in then got pulled back. How did that gap open up? It would seem a bit foolish to go solo when you are probably the best runner on paper, it feels like that potentially cost gold. The Swiss guy on leg 3 making the exit from the river look like the travelator on Gldiators was amusing.

The loss of Archibald is a huge blow, I think she would have made the difference in two golds.
Surprised she has estimated that high, having been such an integral part of the machine, maybe just her natural optimism!
3 or more golds would be a great result I think.

I think Henman came first in terms of being a male British tennis player who wasn't obviously going to fold like a pack of cards before the second week. Rusedski converted to GB after Henman had started making waves.
But GR did have major tournament success before TH.
Quirky stat - GR is exactly one year older than TH.

Yeah, I think Archibald was likely the difference between gold and a podium place in two events as you say Dan. Things like the Keirin are such a lottery anything could happen. I would say maybe 8 medals in total, if everything falls in our favour, is a possibility. If half of those were gold it would be a brilliant return for us.

Medal hope in the women's pole vault fails to qualify for the final after 3 failures at her opening height.

Caudery will be gutted. Trip back to the sports therapist required.
Suffers from imposter syndrome, she’s one of the best and needs to believe it.

I didn't watch it but it seems they played the normal tournament format.
Which seems flawed as with no prize money anyone out of the medal contention had nothing to play for

I guess, but that's the same in every sport. Main difference is that the Olympics is not a big deal for most of the top golfers compared to the majors or the Ryder Cup.
Tennis is in a similar position but it seems to be turning that perception around, so there's some hope I suppose.

Without thinking too much about it I think the difference is with the other sports is when you're out of contention you go home but the golfers continue on the next day.

I felt it was risky leaving it to 4-55m, as that’s a height that can occasionally win international competitions.
All her main opponents came in at 4-40m, which ironically became the qualifying height for some.

Mmm. Sort of. There are group games in football and hockey that are dead rubbers. And for some reason the single sculls goes all the way down to an E final or something like that, so all competitors reach a final, pretty much.
I prefer that to sports where the competitor has one shot and it is all done if they fuck it up.

Okay, so I'm going to say that national treasure Laura Kenny should NOT proceed with a career in media.
0 -
I'm not sure that is the case. A lot of them seem to genuinely enjoy the chance to represent their country which, other than the US at the Ryder Cup, they don't really get to do. Scheffler seemed genuinely happy to take the title. That said, some sort of match play system would seem more appropriate.

Written media would be fine.....

I think I'm in a minority as I always found her 'enthusiasm' really annoying in interviews.

Victoria Pendleton was excellent on Radio 5 for the Tokyo Olympics track cycling. I think she is on the coverage again.
0 -
She is certainly better, but Chris Boardman is head and shoulders above them both.
Shame they can't get Wiggins. I hear he's available for work.

I don't think you are in a minority.
I think I'm a bit accentist, in that I struggle to get past her sounding like Frank Spenser.

Kayak cross looks fun.

It’s a knockout meets gladiators on water. Fun mayhem but an Olympic sport!?

VP was the co-commentator in the BMX aerials. I was quite impressed. Unlike many ex-sportsman pundits (particular a well known swimmer) she'd done her homework on what was obviously not her professional area of expertise. I think. Though VP sounds crazy enough to have done a few backflips on her bike!

I was thinking that. Presumably inspired by Boardercross etc. in the Winter OGs.
