Petrol is coming down a fair bit - cycled* past a station in South London this morning that had unleaded below 143p/l.

Will be heading back up in March with the 23% / 12p per litre hike in fuel duty incoming courtesy the #toryscum GINO. Happy with that panzerwagonboi?

I'm sure if Labour had done it you wouldn't be moaning. May come down further in the meantime but it's no biggie for me. Maybe for you?

HS2 - which may or may not reach London to be useful in any way. Commited to get to Manchester though. You couldn't make it up! Manchester to Harrow will be very useful

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

  • It's one stop from Paddington, so not exactly in the middle of nowhere. But it does probably add about 20 minutes onto most journeys, which kind of defeats the purpose of a high speed rail line.

As we are frequently told it is about capacity not speed it seems like the ideal solution.

Will they be increasing the Elizabeth line capacity somehow?

A lot of work has been done at Euston, so not sure what would happen to that.

It it is now just about capacity why spend the extra money on the high speed infrastructure, instead of just a new railway?

Let's face it, the only reason capacity is now being touted as the key benefit is because they've shaved the plans to such an extent that speed is no longer a benefit.

Or maybe you should just ignore rubbish written by Harry Cole.

Possibly, but unless the network pushes on further than the current phase, there will be negligible time savings per trip and the HS part of the project won't have represented value for money.

Not sure how you can possibly have the information to make that assessment based on a report of a thing that is not necessarily happening from a guy who knows f*** all about railways. BTW, Hunt has already confirmed the government commitment to completing the line to Euston.

No need the only people using it will be people going to that side of London, everybody else will be using the cheaper trains that go into London 10 mins slower.

Me? Aren't the journey times for the phase 1 route only going to be 10-15 faster?

    That's marginal.

Fwiw the Edinburgh tram and the Borders rail line were both supposed to be quicker than they eventually turned out to be once they started putting actual trains on them.

So the time benefit of HS2 might be even less.

It seems very in keeping with this Government to spend billions on something but make a cut to save a fraction of the overall cost and, in so doing, do away with some of the benefit the spending was supposed to create.

If the stories are true and this is some cost cutting measure due to overspend created by inflation in construction costs there’s an element of irony there.

It's a bit like investing in a really high end hifi system and some extremely expensive speaker cables that you can't really afford. You are committed to attaching it to the speakers but it won't quite stretch back to the amp.

[An analogy I'm fighting myself right now]

They're not. This is Harry Cole putting two and two together and making 15.

The Government didn’t help themselves that, when initially asked, there was no denial just confirmation of commitment to take the line to Manchester which wasn’t the question.
